Translational Robotics Innovation Challenge (TRIC)
The Translational Robotics Innovation Challenge (TRIC), supported by UD’s Institute for Engineering Driven Health (IEDH) and Master’s of Science in Robotics (MSR) program, embodies its theme: “From Lab to Life: Real-World Applications of Academic Research” by challenging students to transform research ideas into tangible prototypes with real-world impact.
The inaugural projects demonstrate this translational focus, spanning from advanced assistive health technologies to environmental robotics. Examples include integrating force sensors into a powered lower-limb prosthesis to enable real-time terrain detection for the user, developing a self-paced treadmill controller, and creating a “GhostVision Live” system that uses AI on an autonomous vehicle to detect ghost crab pots in real-time. Other teams are building an amphibious LiDAR mapping system for coastal change monitoring and developing VR-compatible “digital twins” of underwater shipwreck sites for digital heritage preservation. From improving stability and safety for prosthesis users to supporting disaster response and digital heritage preservation, TRIC is where academic innovation is truly brought from the lab to life.
Faculty supervisors: Dr. Panos Artemiadis, Dr. Art Trembanis, and Dr. Fabrizio Sergi
Sponsors: Institute for Engineering Driven Health and the Master’s of Science in Robotics (MSR) program.

Statics Wooden Bike Frame Challenge
MEEG210: Statics is a core course taught in the Sophomore Year in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Course content focuses on designing and analyzing physical objects that remain stationary and support loads, like structures and machines. As part of this course, students work in teams to design and manufacture an all-wood bike frame. They must predict whether the bike frame can support body weight using the theoretical principles from the course. Their calculations are put to the test in a bike race held on the final day of the semester. The race is sponsored by local bike shop, Wooden Wheels Bikes, who supplies the essential components (like wheels!).
This year’s winning bike frame designs will be on display in the lobby of Clayton Hall.
Special thanks to our local sponsor for this design challenge.
