Four-Year Program of Study
Overview
Communication Studies majors receive instruction in both interpersonal communication and public communication. They acquire an understanding of both theory and application in these areas. They also become familiar with the methods of inquiry and research used by scholars in communication and rhetorical studies. Majors take one introductory class in public speaking and another in interpersonal communication. They are required to take a course in Empirical Research Methods (COMM 3700) and also a methods course in Rhetorical Criticism (COMM 3300). Majors complete their programs of study with five to seven upper-division courses in such topics as Nonverbal Communication, Persuasion, Health Communication, or Women and U.S. Public Discourse.
Double Dawgs
This major is part of a Double Dawgs pathway:

Applied and theoretic knowledge of communication processes are the most valuable foundations for any career. Graduates in Communication Studies pursue a wide variety of career options. Some of the most popular post-graduate careers include personnel management, organizational administration, sales, corporate education and training, and public relations in private or public sector organizations. A major in Communication Studies is also excellent preparation for law school, business school, or other professional and graduate training.
Introductory courses in both interpersonal communication and public speaking are required as part of Core Area VI. These may be transferred from other institutions, as may a second-year-level course (e.g., advanced public communication). The two required methodology classes must be taken at UGA. Upper division courses in the major must also be taken at UGA for credit toward the major. If taken at another institution, these courses can count for general elective credit. Communication Studies majors may use no more than 6 hours of transfer credit for COMM major courses (at the 1000- or 2000-level) taken at other institutions; anything over this can count for general elective credit.
The Olive M. Cone Scholarship is awarded each year to a Communication Studies major who exemplifies high academic achievement and commitment to the discipline. A limited number of scholarships are also available to students who participate in the Georgia Debate Union.
Internship credit may be available to Communication Studies majors who have a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA, who exceed a 3.0 major GPA, who have completed either COMM 3700 or COMM 3300, and who have also taken at least one 1000- or 2000-level COMM course and one COMM course at the 3000- or 4000-level. Students must arrange for a faculty member to direct the internship. Internship credit is worth a total of 3 upper-level credit hours which will count as major course work, COMM 4910.
