UMB Alert FAQs
When Will I Receive a UMB Alert?
UMB Alerts are sent for:
Lifesaving emergency information
Weather-related closures, delays, etc.
Other changes to on-campus operations
For clarification on what closures, delays, liberal leave, and more might mean for UMB employees and students, visit
Guide to Changes in On-Campus Operations
Why Is It Taking So Long to Receive a UMB Alert?
We strive to send quick, accurate information. However, it may take several minutes after an emergency occurs for you to receive a UMB Alert.
UMB Emergency Management, UMB Police and Public Safety, and/or other public safety officials on campus work as quickly as possible to
confirm the information
before sending it out.
This
prevents misinformation and false alerts
, but it also can cause delays while emergency responders rush to the scene to confirm what’s happening.
There’s an Emergency, But I Haven’t Received a UMB Alert Yet. What Should I Do?
In an emergency, do not wait for a UMB Alert before you act!
Here are other ways you can receive emergency information, and what you should do:
Fire Alarm: Evacuate using the nearest marked exit.
Learn more about evacuation plans
Mass Notification Systems: Follow instructions shared through the fire alarm speakers.
Emergency Officials: Follow instructions from police, firefighters, emergency managers, and other emergency officials.
Trust your gut!
If you hear, see, or smell something out of the ordinary, take action.
Take the Preparedness Pro training series to learn how to prepare for and respond to emergencies.
What Are UMB Notifications?
Non-emergency facilities information may be sent as a “UMB Notification.”
This is an email-only message that may include information about building closures, flooding, network outages, and more. While this is important information for our community, it does not rise to the level of an emergency UMB Alert.
For emergency or time-sensitive notifications (including changes to campus operations), a UMB Alert will be sent.

Quiet Hours
Silencing UMB Alerts can prevent you from receiving lifesaving information. If you set “quiet hours” on your UMB Alerts profile and an alert is sent during those hours, you will not receive the alert once your quiet hours are over. We do not recommend that you use this feature.
Multiple Ways to Alert You
UMB Alerts will inform you about emergencies through text, phone, and email. Be sure to add UMB Alerts to your contacts.
