The WMF Language team plans to enable the Section and Content translation tools to Southern Altai Wikipedia by default. Also, the team is considering adding
machine translation
(MT) support with
MinT
to the tools. MinT may be providing limited support for your language, so we want to make sure it is useful for the community. For this, my team would like members of your community to:
Test the machine translation support
in a test instance
. You can paste multiple pieces of content from different Wikipedia articles and check whether the provided result is a useful starting point for a translation.
Give us feedback if the machine translation quality is okay to be on your Wikipedia by default, as an optional service or if it is not useful at all.
Let us know if you have any objections to having the Section and Content translation enabled by default in this Wikipedia.
Below is background information about the tools and how you can test them.
Background information
Content Translation
has been a successful tool for editors to create content in their language. Since its release in 2015, the tool has aided the translation of more than one million articles across all languages. However, the tool is in beta in Southern Altai Wikipedia, limiting its discoverability and use. Being in beta also blocks enabling the Section translation in your Wikipedia.
Section Translation
extends the capabilities of Content Translation to support mobile devices. On mobile, the tool will:
Guide you to translate one section at a time to expand existing articles or create new ones
Make it easy to transfer knowledge across languages anytime from your mobile device
MinT (Machine in Translation) is a machine translation service hosted in the Wikimedia Infrastructure. It is designed to provide translations from many MT models. The model available for your Wikipedia is the
MADLAD-400 open-source translation model
Our request
The MADLAD-400 MT is available for your Wiki in our test instance. We want you to test it (translate sentences and paragraphs from articles) in our test instance:

Our plans to enable the tools and the machine translation support
We plan to deploy the tools with the MT support by the 4th of March. If there are no objections from your community, we will deploy them. We want to provide the tools in the way they best serve the community, so we are open to make further adjustments after the deployment based on the experience of the community.

На самом деле, каким-то невероятным образом Гугл итак переводил алтайские тексты с для него неведомого языка ещё несколько лет назад. Поскольку алтайский — очень древний тюркский язык, я думаю, что система по мелочам улавливает какие-то общие черты из родственных языков. В первую очередь, с киргизского. Я попытался перевести текста на представленной странице, но система зависла. При этом, это не говорит о том, что не надо включать инструмент перевода. Он всё равно будет полезным для накопления двусторонних переводов, в первую очередь с русского на алтайский (по факту того, как написано большинство статей в разделе). Тут проблема в том, что активность в разделе упала в связи с антироссийской позицией Википедии. Вот у меня стимула участвовать в Википедии уже нет. Помогаю разделам на языках народов России по причине отсутствия альтернативы для этих языков. —

The WMF Language and Product Localization team proposes to enable an entry point called "Contribute" menu in your Wikipedia. The "
Contribute
" menu is a central place where editors can discover and access all contribution tools available in your Wikipedia.
Having this entry point is inspired by collaborative efforts with product teams at the Wikimedia Foundation, grounded in our research on
Edit discovery
. This research validated the idea of a dedicated entry point, revealing it as a consistent pathway for contributors to find ways to contribute content.
Enabling this entry point will help new contributors quickly discover the tools available to them, allowing them to start using the tools right away. This proposed enablement will include support for a small set of contribution tools, but the menu is designed to be extensible and more tools will be added over time. Below is important information about the "Contribute" menu.
Who Can Access It?
Once enabled, newcomers will automatically have access to this entry point by logging into their accounts. They can find the "Contribute" tab in the User drop-down menu, which will take them to another menu featuring a self-guided tab that outlines how they can contribute content, as shown in the image below.
What else can be accessed from the "Contribute" Menu?
In addition to the self-guided tabs that newcomers can click on to explore contribution tools, the menu will also include an option to "View contributions", allowing newcomers to see a list of their contributions so far.
Will this replace the "Contributions" tab for experienced contributors?
No, the "Contribute" tab on the User drop-down menu will not replace your existing "Contributions" tab. Experienced contributors will not see the "Contribute" tab in their User drop-down menu unless they choose to access it manually through
Special:Contribute
Where else is this menu enabled?
This entry point is currently available on over
245 Wikipedias
. We have received valuable feedback from contributors to some of these Wikipedias, which has helped us enhance their discoverability. One key improvement has been to make
the entry point optional for experienced contributors
who still prefer the default "Contributions" tab.
Will new contributors on desktop and mobile devices have access to the Contribute menu?
The "Contribute" menu will only be available to mobile users accessing Wikipedia through a browser at this initial stage. We will limit its exposure to mobile browser users only for now.
Will this change the configuration of tools in our Wikipedia?
The configuration of tools accessible through the "Contribute" menu will remain unchanged. For instance, if the Content Translation tool is restricted to specific users in your Wikipedia, it will still be inaccessible to newcomers even if they click it from the "Contribute" menu.
Why can't I see all the available tools in the "Contribute" menu in the Wikipedias where it is currently enabled?
As time goes on, other tools will become available in the "Contribute", both new and old ones.
When Will It Be Enabled in Our Wiki?
If there are no objections from your Wikipedia by
July 18, 2025

Hello everyone! I am glad to inform you that as the next step in the
Parser Unification
project, Parsoid will soon be turned on as the default article renderer on your wiki. We are gradually increasing the number of wikis using Parsoid, with the intention of making it the default wikitext parser for MediaWiki's next long-term support release. This will make our wikis more reliable and consistent for editors, readers, and tools to use, as well as making the development of future wikitext features easier.
If this disrupts your workflow, don’t worry! You can still opt out through a user preference or turn Parsoid off on the current page using the Tools submenu, as described in the
Extension:ParserMigration
documentation.

Feminism and Folklore 2026
writing competition on your local Wikipedia.
The international campaign will run from
1 February to 31 March 2026
and aims to improve coverage of feminism, women’s histories, gender-related topics, and folk culture across Wikipedia projects.
About the Campaign
Feminism and Folklore
is a global writing initiative that complements the
Wiki Loves Folklore
photography competition. While Wiki Loves Folklore focuses on visual documentation, this writing campaign addresses the
gender gap on Wikipedia
by improving encyclopedic content related to folk culture and marginalized voices.
What Can Participants Write About?
Communities can contribute by creating, expanding, or translating articles related to:
Folk festivals, rituals, and celebrations
Folk dances, music, and traditional performances
Women and queer figures in folklore
Women in mythology and oral traditions
Women warriors, witches, and witch-hunting narratives
Fairy tales, folk stories, and legends
Folk games, sports, and cultural practices
Participants may work from curated article lists or generate new article suggestions using campaign tools.

– Enables communities to manage writing campaigns effectively, including jury-based evaluation. This will be the third year CampWiz is officially used for Feminism and Folklore.
