In two weeks, we would like to make the Vector 2022 skin the default on this wiki.

select "Vector legacy (2010)" on
the appearance tab of the global preferences
and save the change. We encourage you to give the new skin a try, though.
Since I last came to you with this question, many things have changed. The skin is now the default on most Wikipedias, and all logos are done! We have also made some tweaks in the skin itself. Below is the text I've sent to you once, but I'm sending it again, just slightly edited, for those who haven't seen it.
If you know what this is about, jump straight to the section "Our plan":
It would become the default for all logged-out users, and also all logged-in users who currently use Vector legacy as a
local
(but not global) preference. Logged-in users can at any time switch to any other skin. No changes are expected for these skins.

[Why is a change necessary]
When the current default skin was created, it reflected the needs of the readers and editors as these were 14 years ago. Since then, new users have begun using the Internet and Wikimedia projects in different ways.
The old Vector does not meet their needs
[Objective]
The objective for the Vector 2022 skin is to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. It introduces a series of changes that aim to improve problems new and existing readers and editors were having with the old skin. It draws inspiration from previous user requests, the
Community Wishlist Surveys
, and gadgets and scripts. The work helped our code follow the standards and improve all other skins.
The PHP code in the other available skins has been reduced by 75%
. The project has also focused on making it easier to support gadgets and use APIs.
[Changes in a nutshell]
The skin introduces changes that improve readability and usability. The new skin does not remove any functionality currently available on the Vector skin.
The limited width and pin-able menus allow to adjust the interface to the screen size, and focus on editing or reading. Logged-in and logged-out users may use a toggle button to keep the full width, though.
The sticky header makes it easier to find tools that editors use often. It decreases scrolling to the top of the page by 16%.
The new table of contents makes it easier to navigate to different sections. Readers and editors jump to different sections of the page 50% more than with the old table of contents. It also looks a bit different on talk pages.
The new search bar is easier to find and makes it easier to find the correct search result from the list. This increased the amount of searches started by 30% on the tested wikis.
The skin does not negatively affect pageviews, edit rates, or account creation. There is evidence of increases in pageviews and account creation across partner communities.

Some time ago there was a discussion on meta about how to implement the license update to CC BY-SA 4.0 on all wikis. See
m:Meta:Babel/Archives/2023-06#Aftermath_of_ToU_updates
Wikinews use the license CC BY 2.5. So it does not have the SA part and it is an older version.
I would like to ask why Wikinews does not follow WMF and most other wiki projects. Is there a good reason or is it simply because noone thought about updating the license?
Unless there is a good reason I suggest to update the license to follow WMF.
There is a formal vote on English WN to change to the new license at
en:Wikinews:Water_cooler/policy#Update_of_license
I hope you would use that opportunity to update license here too. --

English Wikinews have discussed a change of license and would like to update from cc-by-2.5 to cc-by-4.0 per
en:Wikinews:Water_cooler/policy#Sum_up_per_march_2024
But community would like all versions of Wikinews to change license together so that it is still possible to translate articles into other languages.
So I hope you would also like to update and you are welcome to leave a message on English Wikinews about the change. --

. It seems that some license templates are substed instead of being added as a normal template.
Instead of
תבנית:שימוש_חופשי
it is better to use
c:Template:Cc-zero
Also
Template:GFDL
is not a good license for media files. It is better to use
Template:Cc-by-sa-4.0
for example (may have to create it first). So I suggest to remove this line:

אני פשוט מנסה לחשוב איך ויקיחדשות יכולה למצב עצמה מעל לאתרי החדשות המשעממים הרגילים. אולי באמת תקציב יכול לעשות את העבודה? עכשיו בנוגע למה שכתבת, יכול מאוד להיות שאתה אכן צודק, ולכן אני מוריד את הרעיון של גיוס כתבים. הרעיון שכל אחד יוכל לכתוב הוא רעיון מצויין, שכן אני לא מכיר אתר חדשות פתוח וחופשי שכזה. דבר אחד עדיין חשוב לי להתייעץ איתכם עליו. זה לא סוד שהמידע כאן לא מתעדכן בעליל, וישנם כאן כתבו משנים עברו שמופיעות ראשונות. ולכן: אין סיבה שלא יהיה בויקיחדשות עורך ראשי אחד ומספר עורכי משנה, שיצטרכו לעדכן את הכתבות החדשות, את המבזקים, לבדוק שהכל עובד כשורה וכולי. כל אתר חדשות שמכבד את עצמו, בין אם חופשי או לא, מכיל בתוכו לפחות עורך אחד.

כמובן שהמשיך לעדכן את המבזקים בזמני הפנוי, אך יש לי עיסוקים אחרים. במצב בו אנו נמצאים, אין מי שיעדכן פה כתבות+מבזקים באופן תדיר, דבר המשפיע על איכות ויקיחדשות. במידה וישנו רצון לייעל את הדבר הזה, מוטב שמסקנותיי ייושמו.

האתר היה די יותר פעיל לפני כעשרה חודשים. האתר עבר שינויים רבים. מעטי משתמשים שנכחו עזבו.
לפני כשבוע תקנתי באג בעמוד הראשי שלקה אצל טאבלטים. אני סבור כי יש עוד לשפר את העמוד הראשי, ניסיתי לתכנת בשפת CSS מודל לעמוד הראשי, הרעיון לא יושם גם כשהתחיל בפועל בעקבות שהפסקתי את העבודה.

בוויקיחדשות האנגלי
מתקיים דיון על שדרוג גרסת הרישיון הנוכחית
(מגרסה 2.5 לגרסה 4.0), ומסתמן שהרישיון יעודכן בקרוב, בתנאי שגם אתרי ויקיחדשות אחרים יעדכנו את הרישיון. למיטב הבנתי, עדכון גרסת הרישיון הוא עדכון טכני ומשפטי בעיקרו, ואין לו השלכות משמעותיות על התוכן והשימוש בו (התוכן ימשיך להיות חופשי, והשימוש בו ימשיך להיות כפוף כמעט לאותם תנאים, פשוט משופרים ומהודקים יותר), וזו הסיבה לכך שקרן ויקימדיה ביצעה בעבר עדכוני גרסה דומים בוויקיפדיה וביתר אתרי הקרן; אבל אתם מוזמנים לקרוא את הפירוט בדיון שקישרתי אליו באנגלית.
בהתחשב ברמת הפעילות הנמוכה כרגע באתר שלנו ובצורך ברישיון תואם בין שפות שונות של ויקיחדשות, אני מציע שניצמד להחלטה שתתקבל בוויקיחדשות האנגלית (שפות אחרות כבר החליטו לפעול כך). לכן אני מציע שנשדרג את גרסת הרישיון אצלנו במקביל לעדכון זהה שיבוצע (אם יבוצע) בוויקיחדשות באנגלית. אם לא יוצגו התנגדויות, אבצע כאן את העדכון הטכני במועד מקביל למועד שבו הוא יבוצע באנגלית.
Proposal: Updating this wiki's license version to be the same as in English Wikinews, when English Wikinews preforms the update. ‏–

English Wikinews will upgrade its license to CC-BY-4.0 - will you join us?
English Wikinews has finally completed the discussions about a license upgrade and will upgrade to CC-BY-4.0, effective for all edits made from December 16, 2024. You can read about it at

Info about suggestion on Meta about change of default license for Wikinews

As written earlier, English Wikinews and some other Wikinews have now changed their license.
I have made a suggestion at
m:Requests for comment/Update standard license for Wikinews
where I propose changing the default license for Wikinews to ensure all Wikinews have the same license (CC-BY-4.0) unless they actively choose a different license.
It will not affect your wiki because you have already chosen a license. --
