The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from
translatewiki.net
typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.
The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner
What this means for you

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are
exactly
the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.
Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

As many of you are aware, we are now two months away from the Fundraiser for the Wikimedia Foundation, 2010. We have lofty goals, and we can meet them and exceed them!
The meta translators are already actively engaged in the annual drive to distribute our messages and we encourage you to do the same, but we would like to point everyone to the developments we've made in banner messages- from creation to commentary to the ones that will go live for test and for the drive itself in November. It's one of our goals to make sure that all volunteers know that there is a place for them in the Fundraising drive. We've started the setup on

grouping volunteers together
that would like to find specific focus and work in that area.
This year the Wikimedia Foundation is taking a proactive stance in reaching out to each and every Wikimedia project and volunteer to find innovation, collaboration, and collation of ideas from the community driven process. The staff working on this is comprised of long-time Wikimedians with as much care and concern for the success of this drive as the volunteers, and we want you to actively participate and have a voice.

we want you to beat Jimmy
. The appeal from Jimmy Wales and the corresponding banner have been tested head-to-head with other successful banners, and the results are clear: it's our best performing message... by a lot. This year we have a lofty fundraising goal; we need all of our banners to bring in donations like the Jimmy Appeal, but no one wants to keep the Jimmy banner up for two months. We want to run donor quotes, and other wonderful ideas, but we have to have banners that work as well as or better than the Jimmy appeal.
We've just released the highlights from a

. With one month to the launch of the fundraiser, the messages we test must be driven by data from our tests and surveys - we can no longer rely on instinct alone.

This team is to support all the languages and consequently it is not realistic to expect that the team members can provide proper support for your language. It is for this reason that we are looking for volunteers who will make up a
language support team
This language support team will be asked to provide us with information about their language. Such information may need to be provided either to us or on a website that we will indicate to you. Another activity will be to test software that will likely have an effect on the running of the MediaWiki software. We are looking for people who clearly identify their ability. Work continues to support languages with complex requirements, such as Korean and Japanese. These languages use
input method editors
("IMEs”). Recent improvements to cursoring, backspace, and delete behavior will simplify typing in VisualEditor for these users.
The design for the image selection process is now using a "masonry fit" model. Images in the search results are displayed at the same height but at variable widths, similar to bricks of different sizes in a masonry wall, or the
"packed" mode in image galleries
. This style helps you find the right image by making it easier to see more details in images.
You can now
drag and drop categories
to re-arrange their order of appearance on the page.
The pop-up window that appears when you click on a reference, image, link, or other element, is called the "context menu". It now displays additional useful information, such as the destination of the link or the image's filename. The team has also added an explicit "Edit" button in the context menu, which helps new editors open the tool to change the item.
Invisible templates are marked by a puzzle piece icon
so they can be interacted with. Users also will be able to see and edit HTML anchors now in section headings.
Users of the TemplateData GUI editor can now set a string as an optional text for the 'deprecated' property in addition to boolean value, which lets you tell users of the template what they should do instead. (

The special character inserter in VisualEditor will soon use the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki will also have the option of creating a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Instructions for customizing the list will be posted

at the English Wikipedia has just completed the first phase. During this test, half of newly registered editors had VisualEditor automatically enabled, and half did not. The main goal of the study is to learn which group was more likely to save an edit and to make productive, unreverted edits. Initial

Auto-fill features
for citations
are available at a few Wikipedias through the
citoid service
. Citoid takes a
URL

DOI
for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. If Citoid is enabled on your wiki, then the design of the citation workflow changed during May. All citations are now created inside a single tool. Inside that tool, choose the tab you want (

The
link tool
has been redesigned based on feedback from Wikipedia editors and user testing. It now has two separate sections: one for links to articles and one for external links. When you select a link, its pop-up context menu shows the name of the linked page, a thumbnail image from the linked page, Wikidata's description, and appropriate icons for disambiguation pages, redirect pages and empty pages (where applicable). Search results have been reduced to the first five pages. Several bugs were fixed, including a dark highlight that appeared over the first match in the link inspector. (

special character inserter
in VisualEditor now uses the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki can also create a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Please read the instructions for customizing the list

Several improvements have been made to
templates
. When you search for a template to insert, the list of results now contains descriptions of the templates. The parameter list inside the template dialog now remains open after inserting a parameter from the list, so that users don’t need to click on "

The
design
of the main toolbar and several other elements have changed slightly, to be consistent with the MediaWiki theme. In the Vector skin, individual items in the menu are separated visually by pale gray bars. Buttons and menus on the toolbar can now contain both an icon and a text label, rather than just one or the other. This new design feature is being used for the cite button on wikis where the Citoid service is enabled.
The team has released a long-desired improvement to the handling of
non-existent images
. If a non-existent image is linked in an article, then it is now visible in VisualEditor and can be selected, edited, replaced, or removed.

), we saw the initiative affecting 42 languages. The average progress in translations across all languages was 56.5% before the translathon, and 78.2% after (
+21.7%
). In particular, Sakha improved from 12.2% to 94.2%; Brazilian Portuguese went from 50.6% to 100%; Taraškievica went from 44.9% to 85.3%; Doteli went from 1.3% to 41.2%. Also, while 1.7% of the messages were outdated across all languages before the translathon, the percentage dropped to 0.8% afterwards (-0.9%).
For
documentation messages
(on mediawiki.org), we saw the initiative affecting 24 languages. The average progress in translations across all languages was 26.6% before translathon, and 46.9% after (
+20.3%
). There were particularly notable achievements for three languages. Armenian improved from 1% to 99%; Swedish, from 21% to 99%, and Brazilian Portuguese, from 34% to 83%. Outdated translations across all languages were reduced from 8.4% before translathon to 4.8% afterwards (-3.6%).
We published some graphs
showing the effect of the event on the Translathon page. We thank the translators for participating and the translatewiki.net staff for facilitating this initiative.

Auto-fill features for citations
can be enabled on each Wikipedia. The tool uses the
citoid service
to convert a
URL
or
DOI
into a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. You can see an animated GIF of the quick,

. So far, about a dozen Wikipedias have enabled the auto-citation tool. To enable it for your wiki, follow the

Your wiki can customize the first section of the

in VisualEditor. Please follow the

to put the characters you want at the top.
In other changes, if you need to fill in a
CAPTCHA
and get it wrong, then you can click to get a new one to complete. VisualEditor can now display and edit
Vega-based graphs
. If you use the Monobook skin, VisualEditor's appearance is now more consistent with other software.
Future changes

The team will be changing the
appearance of selected links
inside VisualEditor. The purpose is to make it easy to see whether your cursor is inside or outside the link. When you select a link, the link label (the words shown on the page) will be enclosed in a faint box. If you place your cursor inside the box, then your changes to the link label will be part of the link. If you place your cursor outside the box, then it will not. This will make it easy to know when new characters will be added to the link and when they will not.
On the English Wikipedia, 10% of newly created accounts are now offered both the visual and the wikitext editors. A
recent controlled trial
showed no significant difference in survival or productivity for new users in the short term. New users with access to VisualEditor were very slightly less likely to produce results that needed reverting. You can learn more about this by watching a video of the
July 2015 Wikimedia Research Showcase
. The proportion of new accounts with access to both editing environments will be gradually increased over time. Eventually all new users have the choice between the two editing environments.

Previously, the visual editor was available on the mobile Wikipedia site only on tablets. Now, editors can use it on all devices regardless of size if they wish. (

A new, simpler system for editing will offer a single Edit button. Once the page has opened, you can switch back and forth between visual and wikitext editing.
If you prefer having separate edit buttons, then you can set that option in your preferences, either in a pop-up dialog the next time you open the visual editor, or by going to

and choosing the setting that you want:

Wikimania 2016: call fors posters, discussions and trainings

Hi people,
the calls for posters, discussions and trainings for Wikimania 2016 are officially opened, you can find all the relevant links on the conference wiki:
The calls will be closed on March 20.
Posters will be reviewed just to make sure that there aren't things which are too much out of scope. Since we have a whole village we will surely find places to attach them, even if we they will be a lot!
Discussions will be managed by a guiding committee who will work on the wiki to meld all the proposals and suggestions.
Trainings will be reviewed by the programme committee. Please note that we request that each training has at least 3-5 interested attendees in order to be put in the programme.
By the beginning of April we will have a first list of all the accepted proposals.
If you have questions we suggest you to ask them on the discussion pages on wiki, so that everyone will be able to see them (and their answers, of course).

Place the cursor where you want to display the references list (usually at the bottom of the page). Open the "

You can now set text as small or big.
Invisible templates have been shown as a puzzle icon. Now, the name of the invisible template is displayed next to the puzzle icon.
A similar feature will display the first part of hidden HTML comments.
Categories are displayed at the bottom of each page. If you click on the categories, the dialog for editing categories will open.
At many wikis, you can now add
maps
to pages. Go to the Insert menu and choose the "Maps" item. The Discovery department is adding more features to this area, like geoshapes. You can read more at mediawiki.org.
The "Save" button now says "Save page" when you create a page, and "Save changes" when you change an existing page.
In the future, the "

Image galleries now use a visual mode for editing. A new
visual diff tool
is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components.
The team have added
multi-column support for lists of footnotes
. The
block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can
request multi-column support
for your wiki.
You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this.
The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow.

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at

Multilingual Shared Templates and Modules

I recently organized a project to share templates and modules between wikis. It allows modules and templates to be “language-neutral”, and store all text translations on Commons. This means that it is enough to copy/paste a template without any changes, and update the translations separately. If someone fixes a bug or adds a new feature in the original module, you can copy/paste it again without any translation work. My bot

can help with copying. This way users can spend more time on content, and less time on updating and copying templates. Please see

. The Editing team recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:
Section editing
The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
The team studied this with an A/B test.
This test showed
that contributors who could use section editing were
1% more likely to publish
the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
Loading overlay
The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.

was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The

One toolbar:
All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.

hosted virtually
for the first time in the event's 15-year history. Since there is no in-person host, the event is being organized by a diverse group of Wikimedia volunteers that form the
Core Organizing Team
(COT) for Wikimania 2021.

When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of
the Reply Tool
. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped
newer editors
communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.
The key results were:
Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were
more likely
to post a comment on a talk page.
The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also
less likely
to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.
These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.
Looking ahead
The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
The next step is to
resolve a technical challenge
. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the
Wikipedias that participated in the study
. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

Команда проекта УКП завершила анализ отзывов, полученных в ходе голосования по Руководству по обеспечению правоприменения УКП.
В 2022 году черновая версия Руководства по правоприменению УКП было вынесено на голосование в сообществе Викимедиа. В голосовании приняли участие представители 137 сообществ, из них топ-9 сообществ: Английская, Немецкая, Французская, Русскоязычная, Польская, Испанская, Китайская, Японская, Итальянская Википедии и Мета-вики.
Проголосовавшие имели возможность представить комментарии по содержанию документа. Комментарии оставили 658 участниц_ков. 77% комментариев на английском языке. Комментарии были представлены на 24 языках, при этом наибольшее количество отзывов было написано на английском (508), немецком (34), японском (28), французском (25) и русском (12) языках.
Отчёт будет направлен в Revision Drafting Committee для доработки Руководства по обеспечению правоприменения на основе отзывов. Версия отчёта для общественности и перевод

Доброго дня,
После проведённого голосования по Руководству,
Комитет Совета по делам сообщества (CAC)
предложил пересмотреть несколько разделов Руководства с целью внесения улучшений
. Проанализировав полученные комментарии, Комитет по делам сообщества принял решение начать ещё один раунд консультаций с сообществом. После этих обсуждений у сообщества будет возможность проголосовать по обновлённому тексту Руководства по обеспечению правоприменения УКП. Комитет также предложил пересмотреть спорное примечание в пункте 3.1 самого УКП.
Согласно анализу, в комментариях были выделены три основные группы вопросов:
1. О прохождении (обязательного) обучения по УКП и его применению;
2. О балансе защиты конфиденциальности и надлежащей процедуры;
3. О требовании, чтобы определенные группы пользователей подтвердили, что они признают и будут придерживаться Универсального кодекса поведения.

объявляются открытыми! Просим вас рассмотреть возможность выдвижения своей кандидатуры для службы в Совете попечителей.
Совет попечителей Фонда Викимедиа осуществляет контроль за деятельностью Фонда Викимедиа. В состав Совета входят попечители от сообществ и партнёрских организаций, а также назначенные попечители. Каждый попечитель служит три года. Сообщество Викимедиа имеет возможность голосовать за попечителей от сообществ и партнёрских организаций.
Участники_цы сообщества будут голосовать за два места в Совете попечителей в 2022 году. Это возможность улучшить представительство, разнообразие и компетентность Совета как команды.

Команда по Стратегии движения и управлению приглашает членов сообщества принять участие в качестве волонтёров на предстоящих выборах в Совет попечителей.
Идея программы "Волонтёры на выборах" возникла во время выборов в Совет попечителей Викимедиа в 2021 году. Программа была успешной. Благодаря помощи волонтёров на выборах мы смогли увеличить охват сообществ и участие в выборах на 1 753 избирателя по сравнению с 2017 годом. Общая явка составила 10,13%, что на 1,1 процентных пункта больше. Были представлены 214 википроектов.
Но 74 вики, не участвовавших в 2017 году, дали голоса на выборах 2021 года. Хотите помочь изменить ситуацию с участием?
Волонтёры на выборах будут помогать в следующем:
Переводить короткие сообщения и анонсировать текущий избирательный процесс на каналах сообщества
По желанию: Мониторить каналы сообщества на предмет комментариев и вопросов
Волонтёры должны:
Соблюдать политику дружественного пространства во время бесед и мероприятий
Представлять руководящие принципы и информацию о голосовании сообществу в нейтральном ключе

свои предложения для Компаса избирателя
Компас избирателя - это инструмент, помогающий голосующим выбрать тех кандидатов, которые в наибольшей степени соответствуют вашим убеждениям и взглядам. Члены сообщества предложат кандидатам свои предложения, на которые кандидаты ответят по шкале Ликерта (согласен/нейтрален/не согласен). Ответы кандидатов будут загружены в инструмент "Компас избирателя". Голосующие смогут ввести свои ответы по предложениям (согласен/не согласен/нейтрален). В конце вы увидите тех кандидатов, которые в наибольшей степени соответствуют вашим убеждениям и взглядам.
Ниже приведена временная шкала по использованию Компаса избирателя:
8 - 20 июля: Члены сообщества выдвигают предложения для Компаса избирателя
21 - 22 июля: Комитет по выборам рассматривает предложения на предмет ясности и удаляет предложения, не относящиеся к теме
23 июля - 1 августа: Волонтеры голосуют по предложениям
2 - 4 августа: Комитет по выборам отбирает 15 лучших предложений
5 - 12 августа: кандидаты определяют свои позиции по предложениям
15 августа: Компас избирателя открывается для голосующих, чтобы помочь им в принятии решения во время голосования.
Комитет по выборам отберет 15 лучших предложений в начале августа. Комитет по выборам будет наблюдать за процессом при поддержке команды по Стратегии движения и управлению. Команда по Стратегии движения и управлению проверит, чтобы вопросы были четкими, не было дубликатов, опечаток и так далее.

Вы можете проголосовать за те утверждения, которые вы хотите видеть в Компасе избирателя на Мета-вики.

Я пишу вам сегодня по поводу графика голосования на выборах в Совет попечителей.
Как многие из вас уже знают, в этом году мы предлагаем
Компас избирателя
, чтобы помочь голосующим определить позиции кандидатов по некоторым ключевым вопросам. Несколько кандидатов попросили увеличить количество символов в их ответах, чтобы они могли дать более развернутые ответы. Избирательная комиссия считает, что их аргументация соответствует целям справедливого и равноправного избирательного процесса.
Чтобы к началу голосования обеспечить перевод более длинных заявлений, Избирательная комиссия и Целевая группа по отбору членов Совета решили отложить начало голосования на одну неделю. Это самое оптимальное время, предложенное сотрудниками, работающими над проведением выборов.
Несмотря на то, что не все захотят использовать Компас избирателя для принятия решения в голосовании, Избирательная комиссия посчитала более уместным предоставить перевод заявлений для членов сообщества на разных языках.
Голосование начнется 23 августа в 00:00 UTC и завершится 6 сентября в 23:59 UTC.

Добрый день,
Комитет по пересмотру Руководства по обеспечению правоприменения Универсального кодекса поведения
(УКП) просит представить отзывы относительно
пересмотренной версии проекта Руководства по обеспечению правоприменения УКП
. Рассмотрение будет проходить в период с
8 сентября 2022 года по 8 октября 2022 года.
Комитет провел пересмотр проекта руководства, основываясь на предложениях, собранных во время дискуссии сообщества в период с мая по июль, а также на основе голосования, проведенного в марте 2022 года. Изменения преимущественно касаются четырех областей:
Определение вида, назначения и применимости обучения по УКП;
Упрощение формулировок для облегчения перевода и понимания людьми, не являющимися экспертами;
Прояснение концепции утверждения, включая ее достоинства и недостатки;
Пересмотр баланса между конфиденциальностью заявителя и нарушителя
Комитет просит предоставить отзывы и предложения касательно данных изменений до
8 октября 2022 года
. Далее, комитет по пересмотру планирует внести дополнительные изменения на основе отзывов сообщества.

Комитет по разработке Устава движения
представил предварительный проект Устава в Саммите Викимедиа 2022, обозначив направление Комитета и самого устава. Исходя из полученных отзывов, Комитет внёс в устав первоначальные изменения. Перед тем как приступить к написанию Устава для всего Движения, Комитет планирует провести консультации с сообществом Викимедиа и получить обратную связь по черновым вариантам первых трёх разделов: Преамбула, Ценности и принципы, и Роли и обязанности (заявление о намерениях). Проекты этих разделов будут доступны на

В середине января 2023 года состоится второе ратификационное голосование в рамках всего сообщества по
Руководству по обеспечению правоприменения
для
Универсального кодекса поведения
. Оно последует за
голосованием в марте 2022 года
, в результате которого большинство голосовавших поддержало Руководство. В процессе голосования участники обозначили важные для сообщества вопросы.
Комитет по делам сообщества
внёс требование, чтобы данные проблемные области были пересмотрены.

Что будет после голосования?

Голосующие будут иметь возможность проголосовать и оставить имеющиеся пожелания по поводу Руководства. Проектная команда по Универсальному кодексу поведения завершила анализ отзывов, полученных во время ратификационного голосования по
пересмотренному Руководству по правоприменению Универсального кодекса поведения
У всех участников голосования была возможность предоставить комментарии относительно содержания пересмотренного Руководства по обеспечению правоприменения. Всего 369 участников оставили комментарии на 18 языках по сравнению с 657 комментариями на 27 языках в 2022 году. Команда «Доверие и безопасность» завершила анализ комментариев, разделив отзывы по категориям и обозначив основные темы и области, требующие внимания.

Фонда Викимедиа
ищет 2-4 дополнительных членов до 24 апреля, которые могут помочь в процессе выбора членов в Совет попечителей Фонда Викимедиа.
В настоящее время планируются выборы в Совет попечителей Фонда Викимедиа на 2024 год. Новые члены приглашаются присоединиться к Комитету по выборам. Комитет по выборам контролирует процесс отбора мест в Совет попечителей сообщества. Присоединяйтесь к комитету и поделитесь своими ценными навыками и идеями в процессе отбора членов в Попечительский совет.
Совете Фонда Викимедиа
есть восемь мест, выбранных сообществом и аффилированными организациями (Affiliates). В 2024 году Комитет по выборам будет проводить процесс отбора на места, выбранные сообществами и аффилированными организациями, срок полномочий которых истекает. Этот процесс будет поддерживаться Фондом Викимедиа.
Члены Комитета по выборам назначаются на трехлетний срок и должны подписать
соглашение о конфиденциальности
. Члены комитета могут рассчитывать на 2-5 часов в неделю до начала процесса отбора и 5-8 часов в неделю во время процесса отбора.
Как член Комитета по выборам, в ваши обязанности будет входить:
Участие в онлайн-встречах в период до следующих выборов (середина 2024 года)
Участие в вводном онлайн обучении в мае-июне 2023 года
Работа с Комитетом по выполнению его
других обязанностей
Новые члены должны иметь следующие качества:
Свободное владение английским языком
Взаимодействие по электронной почте
Знания о движении и управлении движением
