Wow, great question. I think the best thing that can happen here is if someone helps to bring more
structure and semantics to Wikiquote
. On a structural level, that is beyond any one person fixing, but anyone can add templates, metadata, etc. E.g. if you cite a source, include a citation template or use proper list semantics, such as not putting line breaks between bullets in a list. That and adding accessibility features like
alt text
are important issues to me. Thanks for asking and for all you do around here. —

I really need it, apparently the background of my talk page break certain features, but only on one skin, and after fixing now it only works on that skin and doesn't work on others, so I really need this fixed, maybe something using css files?
Edit: I figured it out, just add some css to the css file for each skin:

Just make it you have something that only appears when that skin is active.
Edit: You can do this by making something invisible in common.css and then setting it visible in the skin’s css file. –

Well, I can't think of any other wiki, but this IS quite important. On my user page I implemented a feature that perfectly well for me, but another user informed me that it didn't work in one skin, so I made one for that skin, but it only worked in that skin, so I need some code to differentiate between skins. –

If I edit site-wide CSS, that will impact all users with a given skin. So I want to be very conservative about doing that and I don't want to even experiment, lest I mess up someone's view of the site. If you have examples of other wikis doing this or can justify why you need it done with some clarity, then maybe I can help you. Better yet woudl be community consensus. —

Basically, I want a feature where I can create a span with the class "[Skin Name Here]-show" and it will only show it for users viewing in that skin, there would also be a "[Skin Name Here]-hide" which would do the reverse. –

"Administrator" is capitalized, on all other wikis (including Wikipedia) it is lower case. Could you please fix this? You could do this by either making it lower case, or by capitalizing all User Rights. (the second option is the one I prefer) –

I've edited the abuse filter before, but I'm not a whiz at it. Note that blocking edits outright based on some of these filters would certainly disrupt standard editing. I feel like this is probably not the best way to stop vandalism and would want to get more consensus from the community. —

No, just ask an admin to do it. Again, it's fine to completely reproduce any of the content from any WMF project anywhere, it just requires attribution. The problem with copy/paste "importing" is that it may not import all dependencies. —

Bots can, however, edit pages protected up to the autoconfirmed level so if vandalism on that page is an issue you may reprotect it to the "edit: autoconfirmed" level and my bot won't have troubles with bypassing that restriction. All I did was close the discussions. In nearly every one, the consensus to delete was unanimous. I would recommend you take some time to consider working on tasks that do not require the creation of large amounts of templates and subpages, give that this wasn't a one-off issue, but one where there were scores of pages that needed to be deleted.

My reason for creating these was not just randomly make bad templates, instead I was trying to implement a much larger idea for Wikiquote, but since it would be such a large change and would require large changes to backend things like php and js, I instead only implemented a very small amount of it. But, since I only implemented small amounts of what actually wanted to do

, I instead made something that doesn't have any propose or value. So, instead, I would like to make a local 'test wiki' where I can work on larger things like this that can later be implemented properly on the main wiki.

I nominated the templates for deletion (and there was unanimous consensus to delete them) because they were fundamentally crap templates. The fact the implementation was terrible was only a small part of the problem, the big issue is that the
ideas
behind them were awful. No amount of JavaScript or PHP would have turned those pages into useful templates.
You have tried to reinvent processes for no good reason (often in really stupid ways involving obnoxious amounts of pings), you have made pointless duplicate templates that recreate functionality that already exists, and have created templates that should not be used under any situation because they violate fundamental project policies and fly in the face of wiki culture.
Of those three templates the first one duplicates a template we already have, the second was another duplicate template but with some really really terrible modifications, and the third was a horrendously bad idea for a template that should never
ever
be used under any situation.
I would oppose restoring these as the community has made it clear they don't want them. to edit there productively and have made a ridiculous amount of mess treating this project as your personal sandbox that is going to take months and months to clean up. I haven't edited in a week due to real life work, but there is still a vast amount of localisation, clean-up and deletion nominations to be done. Fundamentally as a newbie who has only been here for a couple of months you should not be attempting to "implement a much larger idea for Wikiquote" and completely remake the project according to how you think it should be - that isn't how consensus or wiki communities work.

No, it's nowhere near finished.
Special:WantedCategories
is still full of clean-up categories that need renaming, merging, and actually creating. There are still a ton of modules and templates that you've copied from other projects without bothering to set them up properly, e.g.
Module:Pagetype/config
, which still has a load of wikipedia only configurations in it. There are a bunch of unused templates that don't actually make a lot of sense on this project,
Template:Disputed inline
doesn't make a great deal of sense when applied to quotations. There are a bunch of templates that I cannot forsee anyone ever using, e.g.
Template:Background color
which is used to applying formatting that should never actually be used in pages,

No absolutely not. There is no RevDel policy here, and we should definitely get one some point soon, but RevDel is generally only used for grossly inappropriate content. Both of these revisions certainly wouldn't be eligible for revision deletion at all on any other wiki I'm active on, especially not on English Wikipedia. And oversight can only be used for "a blatant attack is one obviously intended to denigrate, threaten, libel, insult, or harass someone." --

, they are essentially the same vandal. In fact, 34 doesn't really apply to Wikinger at all. It doesn't really matter which one it's merged into but an extensive amount of time has been spent on filter 33 to make it suitable for enwikiquote and their behaviour here. I was just checking and pretty much everything included in filter 34 is in 33 and more. But as I said I don't want to spend much time talking about the filter itself. --

You can discuss using email but abuse filters aren't like usual content pages. Usually I find if there is a constant vandal around, someone will end up suggesting an abuse filter. An abuse filter ends up being created with things added and removed depending on what does/doesn't work, with reasons added in the notes. Not much discussion is needed beyond that really. --

A while ago an anon complained about the overuse of

and TOO MANY EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I totally agree. For a while some users have been (successfully) vandalizing pages by adding dozens or even hundreds of exclamation points and/or big text.

I see this extremely often, so often that when I was look for a page as an example, the first page I click has both overuse of exclamation points and big text. Also, the

restriction isn't because it is deprecated (it is still used in many high-use templates, even on enwiki), but because it is often used for abuse (intentional or unintentional). Both of these restrictions
only
apply to non-autoconfirmed editors in the mainspace, so as to limit false positives. –

While I agree that it is annoying and most often used for vandalizing, I also agree with Justin that we can fight this in the usual ways rather than by using an abuse filter. I'm generally in favor of not using hard restrictions unless there is no other way. I do find this problem at times (especially on TV show pages), but IMHO I don't think it is so bad that we can't handle this issue without going to the extreme of putting in an abuse filter. ~

I previously reported
an IP address
for its constant vandalism, especially in regards to
Babar: King of the Elephants
. While you banned this user only for a week out of hope that the IP is doing good-faith edits, I would like to point out that the edits have been a persistent problem. The addition of voice actors that were not involved in various projects, especially on the linked Babar article,
have been happening since January
. Furthermore, this IP appears to be sockpuppeting; I've compared
a similar edit
made on
Rugrats in Paris: The Movie
dated to December 2021 which was done by
a different IP
that is similar to the vandalism done by the Babar spammer; featuring an almost similar selection of random animal species that can be compared with
a number of similar edits
; the constant additions of unrelated voice talent
has been a problem that persists
between both IPs. It's also worth noting that the persistence in adding all this random unrelated voice talent and
"animal-like"
nonsense has been constant; not to mention the same articles (i.e., the linked Babar article, Beauty and the Beast) have been targeted by both of them, not to mention this whole unrelated voice talent problem has been going on for even longer, as

by one of the spammer's talk pages. Could both these IPs be blocked indefinetly for persistently spamming the same articles with, by and large, the same types of spam?

Is this true? Are your quotations not actually quotations from the person in question? If so, you know that you need to either 1.) not include them at all or 2.) include them and explicitly mark them as misattributed if they are common misattributions. —

Hi Koavf, I was told to reach out to you for help with this as I've no experience with wikiquote (I tend to stick to enwiki, eswiki, wikidata, and commons) .
An editor, Philip Cross, created the article on
Mridul Wadhwa
yesterday - it seems to border on an attack piece. It calls her (a transgender woman) "legally male", the enwiki article the sources seem to have been copied from actually explains she transitioned in India - she came to the UK with her passport already listing her as female. Furthermore, the source doesn't actually say she's "legally male", it quotes somebody suing her saying that.

He adds quotes about her attacking her sourced to twitter like "Mridul Wadhwa is going to have to reframe his trauma."

In addition to adding abusive screeds from opinion columns describing them in edit summaries as "good sense"

This seems to be a recurring issue, he was recently taken to the wikiquote admin noticeboard for his editing at JK Rowling

He was banned from BLPs and British Politics for disruptive behavior on enwiki, and blocked due to violating that ban in part by trying to manipulate the wikiquote articles corresponding the the articles he was sanctioned for, especially involving the intersections of trans issues, british politics, and BLP.

I asked this question at the VP but thought I should ask you directly as someone who has responded to my questions previously.
How many times do you think an editor can revert someone before a block is justified? Is the answer different depending on what the page is and who the editors involved are? Is this something an administrator has ever been blocked for doing, if so, I would like to see some links. Does it matter how spaced out the reversions are? I've heard somewhere before that 3 revisions in 24 hours is too many, but what about just 1 revision every day, endlessly? I don't think endlessly undoing edits on your own is a particularly good use of anyone's time, because you could at least make it a team effort to try to demonstrate you are on the right side of the community's consensus, however I'd like to know what is allowed and what isn't and whether it's any more complicated than three strikes and you're out. If that's really how it works than all you would need to do to get another user blocked is wait for them to revert an edit, then, within 24 hours get them to revert you two more times, which seems counterproductive and like it incentivizes the behavior in question.

Do you think the Administrator's Noticeboard would be a more constructive way of dealing with our differences in opinion or would the Village Pump be better? In general I like to ask whether other editors found any of the information in an edit I added new and if they remember it, or if it was an interchangeable technical description that could be confused with a dozen others.
If you learned something and remember where you learned it from, it's probably worth including.

doesn't like quotes that aren't at least a hundred years old whereas most of the community will allow them. Either the admittedly boring science journals used by Wikipedia or the much more interesting entertainment articles not from Wikipedia included on the

should be mentioned. If I had to pick one I'd go with the entertainment, because it's more memorable. What do you think?

As for the first question, thank you very much, that's good to know, I'm trying to be more sociable but also avoid being too annoying. As for the second, what's your opinion on "In fiction" sections in general? Most theme pages have quotes from fiction while most people pages specifically omit fictional portrayals to avoid confusing reality with fiction. I find it's mostly historical topics that get these sections and not themes, but we do this for

. I'm really not sure how useful it is for anyone that we do this, as long as there's a reference included than it should be pretty obvious when someone is talking about a work of fiction.

A user who have assumed bad faith and reported me for
vandalism
(the report was ignored by all) is continueing to assume bad faith and revert me despite constant invites to discussion.

is his latest revert. All of the quotes removed by me were not widely repeated in secondary sources, per notability standard (before it was

I made on their talk page before the latest reverts. This is not a report, though you are free to take action if you feel it is warranted of course. My request to you is to ask them to engage in discussion, as I have asked them to several times and as they rejected previously, insisting I am vandalizing and am acting in bad faith.

continued vandalism / political activism by new editor on zionism and israel pages

hi koavf, it's my first time trying to get support confronting behavior like this so i'm feeling confused about what i can do and frustrated that it's still going on two weeks later. i reported it on the vandalism in progress page but i didn't get a response there and now the report is archived, hoping this is a good place to try next. it seems like you've been the one checking most of the reports recently, so i wanted to check with you: if you looked at the user's large subtractive edits and their comments on talk pages and didn't/don't interpret it as vandalism, could you write about how what they've been doing is different than cases that you do judge to be vandalism? and if you do spend some time reviewing this situation, do you have any feedback or advice for what i could try to do differently next time i notice a new editor trying to make large cuts to pages like this?

I recommend choosing a particular edit/quotation, post to a relevant talk page, and solicit feedback on if that particular quotation should stay or go. That way, we can reach some kind of consensus and maybe generalize it. —

But I have already asked in the talk page and posted but it was removed by A2, who has
admitted he has assumed bad faith/assumed political incentives
. The recent conversation on his report did not make him change his mind. The way he ignores me, and even removes my discussions from the talk page make me believe this will not go well. I feel like this is a sort of bullying: reverting everything I do, reporting me (
as he admitted
) without evidence, making me anxious and discouraging me from editing, like happened now. Could something please be done about their behavior? I can't edit like that.

what i wrote 6 days ago on the admin noticeboard is still relevant: "after the updated vandalism report i wrote Aug15 about the new editor NorthernWinds that keeps trying to make large, unusual, political cuts of quotes by notable and relevant people from pages relating to israel and palestine, Peter1c worked with them on trimming the

page at a slower pace. then northernwinds ignored all the feedback we've been giving them about best practices for acting in a respectful way on a collaborative website and went right back to trying to mass remove content from i/p related pages in one edit. they've since started trying to add politically biased quotes to photo captions at the top of i/p pages without any talk page discussion first as well
i reverted 2 of their attempted large cuts on Aug22, this time on the Zionism and Arab-Israeli conflict pages, and northernwinds complained about it to Koavf, who wrote "A23423413: Can you please explain what your MO is here? I really don't want to have to block anyone." if i'm understanding that correctly koavf is threatening to block me from the site for reverting the new editor's continued attempted large quote removals, instead of blocking the disruptive new editor
if northernwinds behavior over the past month is not going to be considered vandalism at the admin level and this conversation is going to continue, is there an admin who can try to moderate it in a neutral, respectful, non-escalatory way?"
why are you two choosing to try to continue this conversation on this talk page instead of in a neutral space? -

from your perspective, are the targeted mass quote removals they continue to try to make in a single edit appropriate behavior by a new editor, or inappropriate (vandalism)? i added an edit note explaining why their large quote removals were inappropriate again, which aligns with what you described

and again in this thread, what i have told them multiple times, and what peter1c showed them. is there a different way you would recommend phrasing the edit notes than the way i did?
if i were an admin responding to this case of repeated political vandalism by northernwinds, a question i would ask them is why they haven't been adding quotes to the website in the past week. makes it seem like there isn't anything they want to do on here if they're prevented from removing the work of other editors on a very specific set of content pages -

It it not appropriate to remove someone's discussion posts in virtually all circumstances (minus things like spam or doxxing) and certainly not when you are purportedly trying to resolve a dispute via talk page consensus. the vandalism was that they again removed an extreme amount of quotes from the main pages and moved them all to the talk page in one edit, despite all of us including you repeatedly telling them that doing that is inappropriate. so i reverted the main pages first with a fuller edit summary, and then reverted the talk pages to match with a briefer edit summary. not sure if you meant to link to the same edit twice, maybe it will make more sense to you if you look at it in our user edit histories instead of the content page histories.
i have written to/about you "if northernwinds behavior over the past month is not going to be considered vandalism at the admin level and this conversation is going to continue, is there an admin who can try to moderate it in a neutral, respectful, non-escalatory way?" (

) and "this vandalism case has needed a response from a more politically neutral admin, seems better at this point for me to write a message with some questions for all admins about what the shesaid commitment looks like so far at the admin level instead of talking to you individually" ([

if you disagree and think that you have been a positive, deescalating mediating presence so far for this case of repeated political vandalism by a new editor, and think you have been representing the admin team well, we could continue the conversation on the admin noticeboard. that would be a more neutral space and it would be more likely for us to get feedback from other admins there than here. we could list the questions we think the other person hasn't responded to yet and order them by date, at this point i count at least three going back to august13 i think you should still give a direct response to if we're going to try to move the conversation forward. if you do decide that you want to continue this conversation, hopefully you can agree to wait at least a day to respond to messages i write from now on, to set a positive example for other editors about how to lower the temperature.
in my opinion, continuing to add quotes would be a more productive way to use our time on here -

I have already written there prior to this comment. Let me be clear: you removing someone else's (non-spam/non-doxxing/non-libel) comments on a talk page
is
vandalism. You cannot do that and you certainly cannot with a misleading edit summary. Additionally, as I think I've tried to make clear, you cannot arbitrate what constitutes someone else's best way of spending his time here. If someone wants to just do small typo fixes, that's great. If someone wants to just nominate spam for deletion, that's also great. It's not like this wiki is purely a series of documents for
adding
quotations: it's also a collection that requires maintenance and there are hundreds of ways that someone could add value other than adding new quotations. I am entirely in favor of adding quotations and very much in favor of finding ways to spotlight marginalized groups: it's lovely that you feel the same. But you cannot use that as a cudgel against another user who comes here with a perfectly valid pretense of removing inappropriate material. You and I may disagree about what is inappropriate, but that general attitude and orientation is a perfectly valid and welcome one. —

I am really reluctant to block someone, particularly for having some correct values and for stale edits, but something like removing someone's talk page posts with a misleading edit summary and then not seeing to get how inappropriate that is is really alarming. Do you want to collaborate together on

I am not a trigger-happy person, But I believe that in these cases, page-specific restrictions on editors who are not keen on collaborating on said pages may be the solution.

I've found a great one by a holocaust victim, as well as others. I have added over 60+ quotes to this website, which I am almost certain is less than I have moved to talk. You have constantly reverted my attempts to improve the articles and called my actions political. I think, however, that what is political is reverting everything but
removal of quotes that support the Israeli narrative exclusively
. If you truly thought I am making political changes, you would have made sure to revert all removals, no matter what was removed. Stop calling my actions "political" or "vandalism". They're not. If you really cared about adding quotes, you would have restored my additions instead of making a dumb revert and later justifying it as "collateral".

MediaWiki doesn't really use a tag or folksonomy system, so if you want to add "SheSaid" to your edit summaries, that's up to you, but it won't necessarily help with anything analytics-wise or for navigation. —

Anyone can add anything and edits to include quotations from girls and women are appreciated year-round. Some confusion may come from how you can use "#SheSaid"
to promote this work on sites where tagging works
. And you certainly
can
add "#SheSaid" in your edit summary as that page notes, but it is not
required
and it won't necessarily
do
anything to make the edits different somehow. It won't show up in a feed like a hashtag in a microblogging service would. So please do add it if you want, but you are not obliged to. Sorry if I made it less clear. —
