Hello
Koavf
, welcome to the multilingual Wikisource! Thanks for your interest in the project; we hope you'll enjoy the community and your work here.
This wiki is the original Wikisource wiki, originally hosting works in many languages. The larger collections have been spawned into separate projects, leaving this wiki to serve as a central collaboration point, and as an environment where works without a language subdomain can be started. Refer to our
languages list
to see which languages still reside on this wiki. You can find a list of the separate language projects on the
main page
or
here
and you may want to look at the
our coordination page
for limitations on placing certain works on the separate language projects.
Most questions and discussions about the community are in the
Scriptorium
The
Community Portal
lists tasks you can help with if you wish. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me on my talk page!

Hi, I noticed you edited
Wikisource:Wikisource and Project Gutenberg
. Do you have any connection with Project Gutenberg? I am a proofreader that has drifted over from pg and feel that a collaboration between Distributed Proofreaders and Wikisource could be very valuable re proofreader development. I am appalled at how little proofreading seems to have been done at Wikisource. I know there are a lot of frustrated proofreaders at DP who want practice. It seems an ideal to advertise Wikisource to novice proofreaders. I wouldn't know who/how to approach at DP... Any thoughts?

DP and WS
Excuse my delay in getting back. If you want to reach me more directly, e-mail works best. I think it's a little silly for our two communities to not work together: it's virtually trivial to take a text from one and post it to the other anyway. I've posted there as well. How were you told that DP is better than WS? Through a private message? What is the best way to contact you? —

There is no written policy page on that. It is based on what always has been done. The main reason is incoming external links that might point to these categories/main pages. So, they are kept as a placeholder to inform that they have moved to their own subdomain. Pretty much the same idea as pages on the Incubator like
these

Yes.
La Bibia piemontèisa
however is an exception, as the creator of those pages has linked it from several websites and requested me to let that page stay. It might be easy to create a separate category for all pages and categories that should be kept and not deleted. --

Basically, the contents is only hosted on the individual subdomain. Only about two pages (main page, main category) are usually kept as soft redirects. With the Piemontese Bible main page being an exception. --

Hi,
I am unsure if setting a language for author pages is a good idea.
These pages (maybe not in this case) may be multilingual. Especially for multilingiual and/or well-known and widely translated authors.

jQuery for deleting napwikisource pages

Hi Koavf!
I made this quick jQuery to check if a page here on the multilingual Wikisource has already been exported to napwikisource.

prepend
"

"
);
else
"#bodyContent"
).
prepend
"
This page doesn't exist in the Neapolitan Wikisource yet!
"
);
});
});
findNap
();
});
If you put it in
User:Koavf/common.js
, it will insert a prominent text telling whether or not a page has already been imported to napwikisource. If a page does exist, it will give a quick link to delete it with a prefilled summary linking to the new location of the page.
Hope you'll find this useful!

So sorry about that, I forgot one crucial part when I pasted the script in here – actually executing the function! I added it in this edit. The text will display underneath the title on every single page (even special pages, talk pages, in editing view, history view, etc. Hence why it's a very quick jQuery, hehe).

PS! If you use the delete link the script generates, it will automatically include a link to the pages' current locations on napwikisource. Useful if for some reason there are external links pointing to something here on oldwikisource, that way the delete log will point to the correct place.

Unfortunately, it does not recognize titles beginning with <'> (likely due to its meaning in scripting languages) and unfortunately Neapolitan has a huge amount of titles that begin with it but this is a very helpful start. We have about 10,000 pages here under
Category:Napulitano
, so there's a lot to remove and this script is very handy. If you can somehow modify it to recognize leading <'>s, that would be fantastic. (My ECMA/JavaScript skills are very basic.) —

I think almost all deletions are done! jQuery can be quite powerful. You're a power user if there ever was one, hehe – I would really recommend looking into learning some simple jQuery. It can make things very efficient, especially repetetive tasks.
Anyways, I've identified some more pages that need to be imported to napwikisource. I don't have the importer bit any more, so if you could do them that would be swell. They are listed in
User:Jon Harald Søby/napwikisource

Hi! Could you help me delete the hiwikisource pages from here? There are so many of them. I have again made a jQuery to help. You can just copy everything from
User:Jon Harald Søby/common.js
to
User:Koavf/common.js
. The script will delete a page once you open it if (a) it's in
Category:हिन्दी
and (b) the page exists in the Hindi Wikisource. I use a Firefox extension called
Snap Links
(also exists for Chrome) that lets you open multiple tabs at a time, making the process very fast.
Note that I'm simultaneously moving all pages on the Hindi Wikisource with my bot, from Latin numerals to Hindi numerals (but it's slow due to a bug in Pywikibot), so for some pages it will not delete the page and give the same red warning that "this page doesn't exist in the Hindi Wikisource yet". You can just ignore those for now – once the initial round of deletions is done I will update the jQuery to also delete the pages that have been moved by the bot.

Yeah, there are several pages missing that weren't categorized properly. After we're done with this main round of deletions, I will check the tags for all deleted indexes and export over the remaining missing pages. (As you can see, I developed the script a bit further than what I described – even while deleting 100 pages at a time, doing that 280 times in a row got too tedious …) As for templates there isn't really any good tools for checking which templates are used across a given set of pages at the moment, so I think I will try to make a script for that. I could actually turn it into a generalized Pywikibot script actually, I looked at the API and it looks rather straight-forward.

How we will see unregistered users
edit
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin
will still be able to access the IP
. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on
better tools
to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can
read more on Meta
. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can
to
the weekly technical newsletter
We have
two suggested ways
this identity could work.
We would appreciate your feedback
on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can
let us know on the talk page
. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you.

Hello Koavf! I'm taking part in the discussion

Thanks! And there's also that, if the project survives and becomes a tool for the language revival, what is in Portuguese may be translated into Old Tupi in the future. There's any way to automatically move transcriptions from one Wikisource into another?
This work
fits better in the Old Tupi project (and I think that there are more works in the Portuguese version that fits the project). Now, theres any equivalent here to the

? Thanks,

There is a transwiki process and bots can do this pretty easily, but I am ignorant of how to do it myself. In many Wikisources, there is a
Translation
namespace for making new translations, but that's usually
into
the language itself, not
from
the language into another one. If the community at a new Wikisource decides they want it to have full bilingual support, that would be up to them, of course. As you can see, {{
Multicol
}} exists locally, so I'm not sure of your question. —

Hello, could you approve my latest filter-blocked attempt at creating
A Confession of Faith
? (The text is bilingual in English and Massachusett, so I assume it belongs on Multilingual Wikisource.) Thank you.

Hello, Koavf! Thank you very much for
your edit
. Since you are a native English speaker and I am not, it's good if you correct my not very good English in my messages addressed to a wide range of readers, and you are right - those messages should be easily understandable for others. So your edit was fine, don't worry, and you needn't apologize for such edits anyway. --

Hello Koavf! How are you?
Today I have finished transcribing the
Historia da Paixão de Christo e taboa dos parentescos em lingua tupi
, but I have an issue: in
this subpage
I had to use the
Template:Translation table
, but it automatically added each page and the subpage in the "中外翻譯作品" and "Chinese" categories. There's any way to "force" a noninclude for these categories, or to add a zh=no in the template (since it is useful for more languages beyond Chinese)?
Unrelated question: a few days ago I found the
Template:New texts
. Has someone ever proposed to use it in the Main page? Looking at the
Main
history, it seems that the template was never used, but I think that it would be a quite interesting addition (specially if the
Template:New texts/item
receives a |mul=yes/no|lang=XX option).
Thanks,
Erick Soares3

Odd. The categories were directly added to the template, so it was transcluded by virtue of being
part
of the template. I've removed it, so purging the page a time or two should fix this.
Re: New texts, I'm not sure, but I would reckon that anyone who created it would want it used there. The hard part is that the main page here is unlike (e.g.)
s:en:
, where you are purely introducing someone to a given language subdomain, since this main page introduces readers to Wikisource
at large
as well as the local texts stored here. I think it would be a fine idea to feature new texts such as your work, so if you'd like to mock up how that would look in your sandbox, that would be nice. If not, I'm willing to give it a shot myself. Thanks. —

Hello!
Thank you very much! It worked here without having to purge the page!
Personally, I think that the "New texts" could fit below the main Wikisource logo, but I would need to check to see how it would look (but I'm not an expert in the advanced Wiki code haha).
Yes, there are Spanish and Latin materials, but it is mostly in the
last part
: Latin language titles with Tupi/Spanish texts.
Part 2
is fully Tupi, if you exclude the "Cover" and the Title; while the
Introduction
is a Portuguese-language essay. The
Old Tupi
Wikisource [proposal] kind needs to be an multilingual project, since the sources from the colonial times mostly used Tupi/Portuguese or Tupi/Spanish (with Latin here and there, since it were all religious works) in their books. I don't think that we will se an Tupi Wikisource anytime soon, but I'm adding the texts (side with my work in the Portuguese Wikisource) because I'm interested about this language.
Thanks again,

Deletion of Igbo translations

Hi,
Someone is asking me on Telegram why you deleted most content in Igbo language. For instance pages like
Special:DeletedContributions/Bibisuccess
(and other people).
Some pages were bad (like
Index:AIM-379
which is an obvious mistake) but some/most of them (?) seemed correct (like
Page:A catalogue of notable Middle Templars, with brief biographical notices.djvu/213
).
True, it's a bit unusual to do both transcription and translation of pages at the same time but it's not unusual and accepted on most of the other Wikisources (see
fr:Catégorie:Traduction Wikisource
for example).
What do you think? Can we undelete the good ones?
Cheers,

: I mass deleted because at first, it seemed like spam from a bunch of sockpuppets. I then learned that there was e coordinated effort by individual users, but it seemed like a lot of bad work was posted, so I solicited that group on
m:
to let me know if they were going to try to do more work here. I am entirely in favor of undeleting any good pages, but I'm a little confused: the example you gave of a good page
has never existed here
and is entirely in English. Were Igbo users looking to transcribe it in English
here
instead of at en.ws and then provide a translation here? —

To be fair, some pages are/were not good, so I understand the confusion (see
Category:Igbo
for pages that you didn't delete). The person on Telegram promised to improve the quality of the translation (and to work on more regular transcription of documents in Igbo).
And yes, the translation is done directly on the pages, so the scan is in English but the text is not English. The page did existed:
(213 not 214) and the original document is in English but the text is in Igbo. Just like it's done on other Wikisource, I you look at the category I linked before, you could find such pages:
fr:Page:Lincoln Memorial (south wall interior)-b crop.djvu/1
It's a lot of pages so I want to be sure before un-deleting them or not ;) and maybe the solution is in-between and only un-delete some of them… What do you think? The bottom line is that we should be clear and consistent, it would essential to guide this potential new Wikisource community.
Cheers,
VIGNERON

Ah yes, getting the page correct is wise. I really think that transcriptions should go on en.ws and translations here after that is done, but I am amenable to undeleting anything that the community is interested in working on, so I hope that was communicated to them and that is still true today. The problem was that there was a lot of bad material and it all seems to come out of nowhere, so it seemed very suspicious. —

About deletion of 'unused' scan files
edit

Hello! I have noticed that you deleted a lot of djvu and pdf scan files of books and periodical issues which could be used for proofreading in some future. For example -- looking to a log of your deletions from date=2025-09-19:
for example, you deleted files with names like File:Якстере теште 1928-***.djvu with comment:
(unused files)
which had been uploaded by me before (and I spent a lot of time for uploading them).
Could you explain -- why you did that? It seems to me that such deletion of those files actually was wrong:
1) As far as I know there is no a rule on the Wikisource requiring (or at least stating it as some useful and desired action) to delete unused
pdf and djvu scan files containing text content
that can be proofread in the future.
2) Moreover, Wikimedia Commons allows keeping such files -- pdf and djvu files of books and magazines etc. even if they are still unused anywhere on the Wikimedia -- provided that their copyright status is OK for keeping them on the Commons. Since the Mul-Wikisource can keep the scan files that are PD in the US but cannot be hosted on the Commons since they are not PD in their originating countries, the Mul-Wikisource should behave the same way as the Commons does for pdf and djvu scan files -- to keep them, if somebody have uploaded them here, wven if they are still unused (not proofread yet).
I think the deletion of those files should be reverted and those scan files should be restored, paying attention that they had been kept for years, and none of the admins had tried to delete them before you eventually decided to do that... --

There is no requirement to delete unused files, but it is conventional to do here and at other wikis, similarly, it is normal to delete abandoned transcription projects that have little or not content on other Wikisource editions. If you want to expand the scope of mul.ws to be like Commons, that is certainly a conversation we could have, but that's not really the scope here either. I'm happy to undelete files you uploaded if you want: are they all just the "Якстере теште 1928-***.djvu" ones? Are you sure that they aren't suitable for Commons? —

Protections for archived discussions

Is there some special reason to sysop protect archived discussions? I am specifically talking about things like:
Special:Log&logid=1014655
. I notice this has not been done in the past, see logs for:
Special:PrefixIndex/Wikisource:Scriptorium/Archives/
. This type of behavior precludes any sort of maintenance to such by anyone without admin rights thereby placing a heavier burden on them. You might notice I did some maintenance to
Wikisource:Scriptorium/Archives/2024
with regard to a change to an interwiki prefix but I cannot do likewise to
Wikisource:Scriptorium/Archives/2025
due to its protections. I can respect trying to avoid vandalism but can we not trust our long time users? Perhaps this can be reduced from fullprotected to semiprotected (so confirmed/autoconfirmed users can edit such) or some such? Thank you. —

It is fairly common across wikis to protect archives precisely so they can't be changed, but you are also correct that there sometimes needs to be some maintenance to a page. I certainly do not object to you editing it, so I'm changing the protection level. Thanks. —

I understand it is commons to protect archives from vandalism since they are not frequently watched/patrolled but long time users rarely just become vandals out of the blue. I think it is equally a bad practice to overly protect things. Thank you. —
