Declaration Book Club
Rating

Monticello’s Declaration Book Club is an invitation to dig into the history …
Monticello’s Declaration Book Club is an invitation to dig into the history of America’s founding as we work together to fashion America’s future. Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration, which celebrates its 250th
birthday on July 4, 2026. But even though Jefferson wrote the rough draft, he thought of himself as the new nation’s scribe; the sentiments he gave voice to were, he said, an expression of the American mind.
The resources have been organized to seed discussion over three sessions—like a three-act play. The first focuses on 1776, our moment of national origin, and centers on the text of the Declaration as Jefferson drafted it and as Congress amended and altered it. The curtain rises for the second act in 1826, the year of the first major commemoration of the founding of the United States, and also the year Jefferson and John Adams both died, poetically, on July 4. We delve into the anniversary, including commemorative printings of the Declaration, and
the causes and controversies that had emerged in the young United States since its beginnings. The final act fast-forwards from the mid-nineteenth century to the present and looks at the travels of the Declaration and its ideals through the country and around the world. Think of it as a baton pass: the next lap is yours, mine, and ours. What do you—what do we declare? What does it mean to pursue happiness not just as individuals but as “one people ... among the powers of the earth”? What will your children’s Declaration Book Club read at the tricentennial
in 2076? We are all, together, still refining the rough draft. Join us to read the past and write the future together.

Primary Sources of the American Revolution Era: This is considered one of …
Primary Sources of the American Revolution Era: This is considered one of the most crucial times of United States history to study, as it lays the groundwork for all political history following it. Not only did it end the colonial relationship with England, but it brought about political change that shaped our lives and served as an example for other nations. It also called into question social and political relationships, raising questions regarding freedom and inalienable rights. Some of America’s most important documents and greatest political minds come from this era. The war itself also was revolutionary, with successful guerilla-style fighting and the defeat by colonials of well-trained British military forces.
