Synopsis

Based on Liu Lianzi's novel, this 2011 palace drama follows Zhen Huan's rise from a young girl selected for the imperial harem to the most powerful woman in the empire — the Empress Dowager.

Overview

Empresses in the Palace (Chinese: 后宫·甄嬛传; pinyin: Hòugōng Zhēn Huán Zhuàn) is a 2011 Chinese historical television drama produced by Beijing TV Art Center and directed by Zheng Xiaolong. Based on the web novel of the same name by Liu Lianzi (pen name of Wu Xuelan), the series tells the story of Zhen Huan, a young woman selected into the imperial harem during the Yongzheng Emperor's reign of the Qing Dynasty, who navigates deadly palace intrigues and ultimately rises to become the Empress Dowager.

Starring Sun Li, Chen Jianbin, and Ada Choi in leading roles, with Jiang Xin, Li Dongxue, Lan Xi, and Tao Xinran in supporting roles, the 76-episode series premiered in November 2011 and was broadcast on Anhui Television and Dragon Television in March 2012. It has been widely acclaimed as one of the most successful Chinese palace dramas ever made, earning a remarkable 9.3 rating on Douban, China's leading film and television review platform.

Plot

Set during the late Kangxi reign and the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty, the story begins with the bitter succession struggle in which the Fourth Prince Yinzhen emerges victorious and ascends the throne as the Yongzheng Emperor. However, the new emperor grows increasingly paranoid about potential usurpation from his brothers.

The emperor's beloved first wife, Empress Chunyuan, died young. Her younger sister, of the Ula-Nara clan, becomes the current empress. Six months into his reign, the Empress Dowager organizes a selection to fill the imperial harem. Zhen Huan (Sun Li), who has no desire to enter palace life, is selected precisely because she bears a striking resemblance to the deceased Empress Chunyuan. She enters the harem alongside her childhood friend Shen Meizhuang and the low-born An Lingrong.

Zhen Huan initially tries to avoid palace politics but inevitably becomes entangled in the fierce rivalry between Consort Hua and the Empress. Her intelligence and wit help her survive, but a series of conspiracies and misunderstandings shatter her trust in the emperor. Heartbroken, she leaves the palace to become a nun at Ganlu Temple.

At the temple, Zhen Huan falls in love with Prince Guo (Li Dongxue). When Prince Guo is dispatched to Tibet and presumed dead, Zhen Huan devises a plan to return to the harem for revenge and self-protection. She re-enters under the identity of Niohuru Zhenhuan, the biological mother of the Fourth Prince Hongli, and quickly regains the emperor's favor.

Upon her return, Zhen Huan systematically eliminates her rivals. The Empress is exposed for her crimes and placed under house arrest. Zhen Huan slowly poisons the emperor and reveals his concubines' betrayals before announcing his death. Hongli ascends the throne as the Qianlong Emperor, and Zhen Huan is elevated to Empress Dowager — the most powerful woman in the empire.

Cultural Impact

Empresses in the Palace has had a profound influence across the Chinese-speaking world. It sparked a wave of palace intrigue dramas, inspiring successors such as Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace (2018) and Story of Yanxi Palace (2018). Iconic lines from the show, such as "臣妾做不到啊" ("I simply cannot do it, Your Majesty!"), became viral internet catchphrases.

In 2015, Netflix acquired the rights to the series and released a condensed six-episode version for global streaming, later moving to Amazon Prime Video. This marked a significant milestone for Chinese period dramas reaching international platforms. The series continues to be frequently rebroadcast on major streaming platforms and is regarded as a classic in the history of Chinese television.
