Synopsis

Pingyao is China's best-preserved ancient walled city with over 2,800 years of history. Once China's financial center and the birthplace of the first draft bank. A UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 1997.

Overview

The Ancient City of Pingyao (平遥古城), located in Pingyao County, Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province, is the best-preserved ancient walled city in China. Originally founded during the reign of King Xuan of Zhou (827 BC–782 BC), the current city walls date to the 3rd year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1370 AD). The city covers 225 hectares and has a history of over 2,800 years.

The entire city is shaped like a turtle crawling southward, earning it the nickname "Turtle City." The ancient city consists of city walls, shops, streets, temples, and residential buildings forming a vast architectural complex that remarkably preserves the basic appearance of a Ming and Qing county town. It is considered the most complete ancient city in China's Han ethnic regions.

In 1986, Pingyao Ancient City was designated as a National Historical and Cultural City by the State Council. On December 3, 1997, Pingyao Ancient City, along with Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple, was inscribed on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage List.

Jin Merchant Culture

During the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was the center of China's financial industry. In 1823 (the 3rd year of the Daoguang era), Rishengchang Draft Bank was founded in Pingyao — China's first institution specializing in remittance services (similar to modern banks). Subsequently, Pingyao merchants opened many more draft banks, with operations spanning the entire country and reaching overseas.

Pingyao's draft banks not only handled remittances but also managed deposits, loans, and the issuance of bank notes — covering almost all functions of modern banks. The rise of draft banks made Pingyao, for a time, China's "Wall Street."

Jin merchants (Shanxi merchants) were one of the most powerful merchant groups during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Known for their integrity and honest dealings, their business ethics and management practices continue to be studied and learned today.
