This group was closed on 2014-10-30.
See the Web Payments Interest Group http://www.w3.org/Payments/IG/
This group was set up as a follow-up on the W3C Web Payments Workshop that took place 23-24 March 2014. The workshop participants advocated W3C to launch a dedicated steering group (W3C Interest Group) to engage further in the development of core standard technologies to better support payments on the Web.
This community group is a first step in that direction, and will host the discussions around the future charter of the interest group. The objective is to ensure that all stakeholders are able to provide inputs on the role and actions of the future group, and to ensure that a critical mass of representatives from the different stakeholder groups are ready to engage in this work.
This group will not publish specifications.

Web Payments Interest Group Charter
Draft Version 0.3 of the Web Payments IG charter published
Stéphane Boyera
Posted on:
July 4, 2014
I just published the
version 0.3 of the Web Payments Interest Group charter
. This charter incorporates the
comments received on version 0.2
This version is a relatively minor revision that integrates the comments receive. There is no major change compared to version 0.2 and I believe that we are getting close to a stabilized version. I want again to thank all the commenters and perhaps it is time to call for a final review period in the next few weeks so that we can engage with the next step and a formal review process by W3C membership?

I just published the
version 0.2 of the Web Payments Interest Group charter
. This charter incorporates the
comments received on version 0.1
I want to thank all the commenters. We received so far lots of contribution, and I hope that the new version address all the concerns that were expressed. I believe we still need a few iterations before we are all happy with the document. I’m therefore welcoming all comments on this new version, and will continue keeping track of received comments on the
wiki of this group

First draft of future web payments interest group charter published
Stéphane Boyera

Dear All,
I just published
a first draft of the charter of the future Web Payments Interest Group
(aka Web Payments Steering Group). This first draft is largely based on
the output of the workshop in Paris last march
The objective of this document is to drive the discussion and collect as much feedback as possible from the community.
There are a few specific points i would like to get comment on:
The deliverable section is surely the most important one, defining the scope of the investigations. We have selected 3 major topics and it is essential to hear from the community if those topics are right, are consensual and are attractive for a big part of the actors. In particular, I’m interested to hear whether there are buzz-words or work items that might be problematic or at the opposite essential (but missing).
Task forces: the topics described in the document are covering various areas of Web payments, and are likely concerning different players. It is therefore likely that the group will have a set of dedicated task forces on specific topics. In hte current charter, I haven’t put any task force description, and i tend to feel that this will come naturally during the work of the group. However, people may feel more comfortable having a deeper description of some of the work items. All feedback on this point is welcome.
The audience of the future steering group: A big part of the groups at W3C, while restricted to W3C members and invited experts, are working in public and receiving public contributions. This is the option we put in this draft charter. I would be happy to know if the payment industry is more likely going to be interested in working in public or internally as a closed group and query the community on regular basis through the publication of draft documents.
All comments are welcome, either on
the mailing-lists of this CG
or privately to W3C team.

I’m very happy to launch this new community group which is a first step towards a Web Payments activity at W3C. This group was formed following-up on the
W3C Workshop on Web Payments that took place in Paris, 23-24 March 2014
. The participants highlighted the need to improve the overall Web Payments ecosystem, and the potential role of W3C in this area (read
the Workshop Report
).
Our objective with this new community group (CG) is to proceed with the recommended actions from the workshop participants and develop in an open and inclusive way the charter of the W3C Web Payments Steering Group (
W3C Interest Group
). This CG will have a short life time and will be closed when this future group is launched.
In terms of roadmap, in order to bootstrap the discussion, we will develop a very first draft of the charter in the next 15 days and then start an iterative process to refine and develop it till all participants are happy to move on and start the work, and till we have reached a critical mass of commitments to join the future group from representatives from key stakeholder groups of the payments ecosystem.
Participants of the CG are expected to review and contribute to the charter and promote and advertise the work done in the group in their network. For those who didn’t participate in the original workshop in Paris, it would be essential to read the
workshop report
to get a sense of the objectives of the future group.
