I need help with DEFAULTSORT for articles with people with certain kinds of names. What is the correct way to add DEFAULTSORT to someone like Björn Grossmann, do I write it as Bjorn or Björn. Different editors have told me different things. I'm being warned that I may be blocked from future editing. Vincelord (talk) 14:28, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should put this as its own question as opposed to answering under this one, however I usually follow the name most used (so if the person uses an umlaut then I’d use an umlaut), don’t take it from me though. I have taken nearly sixty photos of my own for the project, but there are two that I would like to reproduce in the book from Wikipedia articles. These are of statues that I was unable to locate. Krispee56 (talk) 22:04, 19 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

You have to click on each photo you are interested in and look at the licensing information. If it says "public domain" then you can do as you please. Most of them are CC-BY-SA, which means you can freely use them as long as you give attribution to the source you got it from, something like "Photograph by JaneSmith, from Wikimedia Commons", or other appropriate wording. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 22:12, 19 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
"Photograph by JaneSmith, from Wikimedia Commons" is rarely if ever an adequate form of attribution. Please follow the guidance on the page for the specific image.
For example, on File:West Midlands Metro Eastside extension - 2026-04-09 - Andy Mabbett - 20.jpg you can read:

attribution – You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:35, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I was suggesting something concise that could be put in a caption under an image in a printed book. Providing a link in print media isn't really practical. A more detailed attribution could possibly be an endnote in a chapter. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 14:21, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
If someone uses your text in a printed book, they will be in breach of the licence. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:35, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Text? This discussion is about publishing an image in a book. The CC-BY-SA license would permit this with proper attribution. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 16:51, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. The text you suggested (and which I quoted) is not, according to the licence, "proper attribution". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:38, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

The message was from @.nhals8 i removed image from Reddit because the image i saw contained words such as "FUCK SPEZ!" which is isn't suitable for younger kids because Wikipedia was designed for all ages but im unfortunately told im not allowed to censor information what can i do? HelloIMEditingSometimes2026 (talk) 08:11, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Please read WP:NOTCENSORED. Wikipedia is accessible to all ages but not designed for all ages. Parents shold be supervising their children's internet use.
That the image merely contains the word fuck is not sufficient grounds to remove the image. If there are other reasons to do so, please discuss it on the article talk page. 331dot (talk) 08:18, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Per Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, Wikipedia is not censored. More specifically;
Wikipedia may contain content that some readers consider objectionable or offensive‍—‌even exceedingly so. Attempting to ensure that articles and images will be acceptable to all readers, or will adhere to general social or religious norms, is incompatible with the purposes of an encyclopedia.
Obviously, I know that the word fuck is inappropriate for kids, but in documenting human knowledge, and especially in cases of dissent, (see also subjects such as Fuck Donald Trump, Putin khuylo!, or Hitler Has Only Got One Ball) I doubt that we should censor them to an "acceptable" view for a certain group or for the sakes of family-friendliness. nhals8 (rats in the house of the dead) 08:21, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I'm no longer even certain that fuck is inappropriate for kids. My kid came home one day from private-school kindergarten and used the word without any prompting from us parents. ...There's an episode of Arthur about that. Heck, the episode even predates Reddit. And introduces children to The Sopranos The Altos to explain the liberal censorship beeping the episode is about to use! (Which I suppose is both an example of "kids understand more than you think" and "maybe parents should supervise their kids or at least help them understand the things they come across in their lives, including cursing".) - Purplewowies (talk) 23:22, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I've asked a parent who wanted to shield their kids from profanity: would you rather they learn about those words from you, or from the schoolyard? One way or another, they will be exposed. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 00:26, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

As I said, it was deleted as an abandoned draft; drafts are deleted after six months of inactivity, but they can be restored with a request at WP:REFUND. 331dot (talk) 08:59, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @HelloIMEditingSometimes2026.
The article would have been moved to draft because it was unsatisfactory as an article, to give somebody a chance to work on it: the problem was probably that it was inadequately sourced.
Note that the basic requirement for there to be an article about a subject is that the subject meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. These criteria do not much depend on what the subject is, or does, or has done, but on what has been published about the subject. This means that it is perfectly possible that APKMirror is not Wikinotable even if the other ones you mention are. If that is the case, then no accceptable article about it is possible. (I don't know whether it is or not, but that is a possibility). ColinFine (talk) 10:13, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't really related, but you wanted to check whether there was a Wikipedia article about a certain topic, and your first thought was to ask ChatGPT whether the article existed and then come and check Wikipedia to verify that? Instead of just checking to see whether Wikipedia had the article you were looking for? Athanelar (talk) 13:53, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

When viewing any WP page in the browser, I always had some icons in the upper right corner: Alerts, Notices, Watchlist, Settings. Yesterday, the Watchlist icon got replaced with a Saved Pages icon. I did not deliberately make that change. Maybe I accidentally changed some user preference? Any idea how to get my Watchlist icon back? (I'm using Vector 2022 Skin, within a web browser). @Noleander: The feature is only in Vector 2022 and only if "Saved pages" or "Automatically enable most beta features" is enabled at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures. There should be a Watchlist option in a drop-down menu on the user icon at top right. I don't know a way to keep the feature without moving the watchlist. File:Mockup of save article feature on desktop Englih Wikipedia.png is apparently not how it's actually implemented. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:37, 20 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Huh. I un-checked "Automatically enable most beta features" and "Saved pages" on my Preferences page, and that fixed it. Apparently I clicked "Automatically enable most beta features" just for kicks a few days ago. I wouldn't expect that choice to remove an icon from my skin, but I guess it did. Thanks for the help!

Sunnie05, I imagine that you hope to adorn the article The Devil is a Southpaw with an image of its front cover. I have no reason to think that this (here for example) is anything other than conventionally copyright, "all rights reserved". So you'd have to claim "fair use" of non-free content, in the article The Devil is a Southpaw (and nowhere else). ¶ More pressingly, the article currently has four references, none of which is more than a "bare URL". How about making the references more informative and thus more helpful? -- Hoary (talk) 05:04, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Sunnie05 Assuming you want to add the bookcover as a WP:LEADIMAGE: Go to WP:FUW, pick Upload a non-free file > This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use. > This is the official cover art of a work. Hello,

I am seeking guidance regarding the correct process for improving an existing article while respecting Wikipedia’s conflict of interest and paid contribution guidelines.

The article in question is: Roger Fry (educationist)

There are currently maintenance templates indicating: - Lack of sufficient citations - Promotional or subjective tone - Possible paid contributions

We may have a connection to the subject of the article, so we want to ensure we proceed transparently and appropriately, without editing directly in a way that could violate Wikipedia policies.

Could you please advise on the best way to: 1. Propose improvements (such as adding independent reliable sources) 2. Address concerns about tone and neutrality 3. Properly handle conflict of interest in this situation

We are already planning to use the article’s Talk page, but would appreciate confirmation or additional guidance on the correct approach.

Thank you for your help. SirNicolasfrias (talk) 08:04, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

SirNicolasfrias Please elaborate on "may have a connection"; you either do, or you don't. You say "we", but only a single person should have access to your account.
You are correct to want to use the talk page, if you use the edit request process you will draw attention to your proposals.
Please read WP:COI and WP:PAID. You will need to disclose your relationship on your user page(User:SirNicolasfrias); you are considered a "paid editor" if you work for the subject of your edits or are otherwise editing within the scope of your job duties. 331dot (talk) 08:53, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your clarification.
Understood regarding the conflict of interest and the need to follow the proper process. I will make sure to use the Talk page and the edit request process rather than editing the article directly.
To proceed correctly, could you please advise what types of sources and references would be considered sufficient to address the current maintenance templates, particularly regarding:
Improving sourcing and verification
Ensuring a neutral and non-promotional tone
I would like to focus on proposing well-supported, neutral improvements in line with Wikipedia standards.
Thank you for your guidance. SirNicolasfrias (talk) 12:20, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Read Wikipedia:Reliable sources, but note that whether a source is suitable as a citation depends on a lot more than its 'type'. It clearly depends on what it actually has to say on the subject matter, and on what text it is being proposed as a citation for. Note in particular that we need independent sourcing for most content: we base articles on what other people have to say on the subject matter, and not on the subject themselves. AndyTheGrump (talk) 12:31, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hello,
Thank you again for your guidance.
After reviewing the references currently used in the article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Fry_(educationist)
I noticed that many of them appear to be institutional or directly related to the subject (for example, King’s Group, COBIS, Trinity College, directories, or similar sources).
To make sure I understand correctly, are these types of sources generally considered insufficient because they are not independent?
Additionally, would sources such as major news outlets, in-depth articles, or independent publications discussing the subject be the appropriate way to improve the article and address the current maintenance templates?
I would like to ensure that any proposed changes are based on the right type of sourcing.
Thank you very much for your help. SirNicolasfrias (talk) 07:21, 24 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I represent Fluance and would like guidance on the correct Wikipedia process for submitting a company article draft. We want to follow conflict of interest rules properly and avoid editing in a way that does not align with Wikipedia guidelines. Could you let us know the best route to take and what level of independent sourcing is generally expected before submitting a draft for review? ~2026-24554-59 (talk) 13:32, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, @~2026-24554-59.
The short answer to your question is, Don't waste your time. Most companies in the world do not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and no article on them is possible.
If yours is one of the few companies that do meet the criteria, then an article about it is possible. Note that the article, even if you create it, will not belong to you or your company, will not be controlled by you our your company, will not necessarily say what you would like it to say, and should be based almost 100% NOT on what you want people to know about the company, but on what people wholly unconnected with you, and not fed information on your behalf, have chosen off their own bat to publish about your company in reliable places - even if they are critical of you, or say things you would rather not be aired. See WP:PROUD. (For most companies there is not enough such independent material published, which is why they do not meet the criteria).
I suspect that, like many people, you are here because you believe that "having a page" on Wikipedia will help your company. If that is your purpose, please note that that is called promotion, and is forbidden in Wikipedia.
If, despite this, you decide you want to continue, then the second hurdle is that your conflict of interest makes an already challenging task (writing a Wikipedia article without significant experience of how Wikipedia works) even harder.
The steps you would need to take (summarised in your first article) are:
  1. Create an account. (This one is optional, but strongly recommended.) If there are more than one of you working in Wikipedia, you need to create individual accounts.
  2. Make a formal declaration of your status as a paid editor (see the link for how). This is mandatory - and the user page is the preferred place to put it, which you only have if you have an account.
  3. Find several sources each of which meets all the criteria in WP:42. Read about WP:CORPDEPTH before you do this.
  4. If you cannot find at least three sources which are reliable, wholly independent of you, and containing subsantial coverage of your company (and not WP:CORPTRIV), give up.
  5. If you have found them, you can create a draft: use the article wizard.
  6. Forget every single thing you know about the company, and write a neutral summary of what your independent sources say. (Do you see why your COI makes it even more difficult)?
I know this sounds negative. I am trying to help you avoid what is probably a long and frustrating (and, likely, fruitless) task. ColinFine (talk) 15:13, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

~2026-24554-59 (talk) 13:37, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Please see conflict of interest amd paid editing. Please also read WP:BOSS and show it to others at your company. You're not likely to succeed at writing a new article, especially as a new user without prior experience. If you think that you can set aside everything that you know about your company, all materials it puts out, and all mere reporting of company activities, limiting yourself to summarizing critical analysis and commentary as to what makes your company a notable company, you may use the Article Wizard to create and submit a draft. I will caution you, most people have great difficulty with that. Most companies on Earth are not notable in a Wikipedia sense. 331dot (talk) 13:45, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@~2026-24554-59 This was answered just above. Both answers say the same thing -- this task is extremely difficult. David10244 (talk) 14:05, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Why does this category exist? Questionadora ávida (talk) 13:43, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

My guess is that it was formerly a category for error categories generated by pages like cite web, which was later moved with a redirect left. having a cite web with a url=http/:/www.cnn.com parameter would generate an entry in the category that this redirects to.Naraht (talk) 13:47, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Questionadora ávida: Click "View history" and "View logs for this page" to see [3] which includes "Populated by deleted or retargeted template" in a deletion summary. There are still thousands of links to it, mostly hardcoded in old messages like User talk:Bruce leverett#Reference errors on 2 February, so it's practical to have a link to the current category. Hey, is it ok to take an image from the subject's site? For example, I am working on updating the article on Charlottesville Area Transit, since there are no images of the actual buses (only the free trolley), can I take an image from the official site and put it in? Thank you! HHellstedt (talk) 15:37, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Probably not. It depends on if the images on the official site are compatible with the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License that Wikipedia licenses its content under. Assuming when you say "official site" you mean charlottesville.gov, their copyright notice says "All content © 2006-2026 Charlottesville, VA and its representatives. All rights reserved." Therefore, no their content is not compatible with Wikipedia's license. I do not believe a photograph of a bus would fall under our WP:Fair Use policy. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:42, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Where could I find a good picture? HHellstedt (talk) 15:48, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
You could tag the talk page with Template:Photo requested, and tag Category:Wikipedians in Virginia and perhaps someone in Virginia can take a photo. You could also look at the Charlottesville Virginia category on Commons to see if there is one there. Or if you are ever in Charlottesville, Virginia, you could take one. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:58, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, a week has passed since this discussion was opened here. Consensus has been reached; could someone please proceed with the page moves? Many thanks in advance. ~2026-24468-67 (talk) 18:13, 21 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

While consensus has been reached to move it, the supporters of the move fractured on the subject of whether or not to capitalize Indio/indio and so I relisted the topic (highly frustrating situation, trust me I was no happier to relist it than you were to see it happen). I actually didn't realize this had been posted here when I did that, but as a tip: go to the requested move and post a reply pinging the editors who didn't clearly state their preference for one option or the other. Hopefully that will get them moving.
Also note that if consensus becomes clear I will try to be there to immediately move the article. Waiting a full week is not required after a relisting.

I was looking at article and decided to check out the sources. This seems to to rely fully on a single source that is effectively narrated as a spy thriller with no sources (and historical errors). I wrote more about it on the talk page.

My question is, would this classify as a speedy delete? There are more solid sources that suggest that there is an information gathering function within the Vatican State but we do not know if there is a single centralized information gathering organisation within the Vatican state. We also do not know whether the name L’Entità/Servizio di Intelligence is correct. All these claims rely on a single source (and a derivate of it). ~2026-24576-69 (talk) 10:34, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think The Entity (intelligence service) qualifies for WP:G3 as the article is not written as a hoax, but the reliability of its sources is disputed. I would suggest informing relevant wikiprojects of the NPOV discussion on the article talk page to get more input. The notices should be neutrally worded. Hello, There is an article about me in Wikipedia in Swedish (plus a brief one in German). Some of my contacts abroad have complained that there is no English version, so I would like to add an English version, plus a small update. Beacuse of the obvious COI, I cannot do this myself. How can we solve this problem? Best regards, Per Molander, Sweden ~2026-24657-36 (talk) 12:27, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

In short, my suggestion for How can we solve this problem? is that we don't. If you are notable by English Wikipedia standards, then somebody completely unrelated to you will eventually make an article about you. The fact that no article thus far exists about you tends to be a good indicator that you don't pass the criteria for inclusion, and trying to force the matter by creating an article about yourself tends to be a frustrating and unproductive endeavour for all parties involved.
The longer answer is; You are welcome to submit a draft article via Articles for Creation, which would then be reviewed by a neutral editor before publication; see Help:Your first article for some details.
That said, you should be aware that we strongly discourage people to write articles about themselves, that having an article about yourself isn't always a good thing, and that the English Wikipedia typically has the strictest criteria for inclusion, and so an article that may be acceptable on svwiki or dewiki may not be acceptable here on enwiki.
Given that your professed reason for wanting the article is complaints from your "contacts abroad" that they can't find an article about you, you should also be aware that the English Wikipedia is not a place to promote or publicise yourself in any way, including "making sure people can find information about you if they look you up" or any similar reasoning. Athanelar (talk) 13:09, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to the above, the rules at each Wikipedia are different. The first thing to do is work out if you are "notable", i.e. suitable for an English Wikipedia article. This usually means substantial coverage in several independent sources, see WP:NBIO for details. At first glance, the sources in the sv article don't appear to be independent. I set up automatic archiving a little while ago, which was all sorts of fun on mobile. I think I broke Cluebot or made it angry somehow, because it seems to have decided that everything from the last few years should go on the August 2025 page.

I've had a look on the guidance pages to see how to fix it, unfortunately my brain overheated and switched off after two paragraphs.

I'm thinking it would be better to have my archive divided into years instead of months, which would probably also involve renaming the two pages that exist. I now regret having that thought, but it nevertheless remains.

Is there anyone that can help, perchance? I'm very content with someone fixing it on my behalf, but clear instructions would also be very welcome!

The priority is getting the August page fixed, then switching to yearly archiving & getting it all to tally up.

Would it be possible to change User talk:Blue-Sonnet/Archives/2025/August to 2024 (although there's not much there) and User talk:Blue-Sonnet/Archives/2025/October to 2025, then update the archive search box on my Talk page? That would just leave the task of amending Cluebot's instructions.

BTW I don't have a PC, but I might be able to use my work laptop if necessary to get this sorted out - I try to avoid using it since my colleagues inevitably see I'm online and try to get me to do work... Blue Sonnet (talk) 12:56, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I know very little about talk page archiving, but tip for your computer situation: if you have a local library and your local library has computers, you could log in there, which would make archiving much easier. 🏳️‍🌈JohnLaurens333 (Ping me!) 13:08, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I miss the library...
I might give it a shot on a Sunday actually, I work from home three days a week so I've got the laptop here & Wikipedia thankfully isn't blocked.
Since they're my own pages it's not a huge drama if I get it wrong, it's the sort of thing I'll probably figure out eventually but I'm just not quite sure where to start. Blue Sonnet (talk) 13:18, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I assume you've tried changing to desktop view on your device? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:45, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, since that's the only way I can see the archive search box!
I'm basically not sure how to change the titles of the pages and have them synch to the search box, if it happens automatically, etc. Trying to do it on a mobile phone under any view is not easy, unfortunately! If they're renamed then I can probably cut and paste the contents, I'm just having trouble getting it all straight in my head. Blue Sonnet (talk) 13:54, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Blue Sonnet: Talk pages in the mobile version have a "Learn more about this page" link at the top. It shows your archive box. On 21 February 2026 you requested archiving with age=4320.[4] That's 180 days so the first bot run archived everything up to 180 days earlier in August 2025 and placed it in User talk:Blue-Sonnet/Archives/2025/August. That's normal for the bot and documented at User:ClueBot III#format which mentions another bot doing it differently. If you keep the age then you should get normal monthly archives after that. You are free to split and move archives manually. The bottom of the mobile version has a "Desktop view" link which may be more practical here. User talk:Blue-Sonnet is currently 168,036 bytes and covers 6 months. If you keep this activity level then a yearly archive would become quite big. You can also use numbered archives with a fixed size. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:09, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Good point, I remember getting some advice on the numbers but my ADHD doesn't like those.
So if I change the archive page names, will the archive search box reflect those changes automatically? If it does then I can probably figure the rest out for myself. Blue Sonnet (talk) 14:42, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Blue Sonnet: The current archive box uses User:ClueBot III/Indices/User talk:Blue-Sonnet which is updated by the bot and may (not sure) be overwritten with archives made by the bot if you try to change it manually. Otherwise {{Archived annually}} should work with annual archives. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:56, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I am writing an article on the phrase "... by symmetry ..." which is frequently used as a step to simplify mathematical proofs. The article would cover the history of the usage of the phrase, variants of the phrase, and in what contexts the phrase is correctly and incorrectly used.

My question is what should be the correct title for this article. The most accurate title would be ... by symmetry ... (italic title per WP:ITALICTITLE and MOS:WAW) but the initial ellipsis (of three unspaced periods) might cause technical or search problems, although starting an article title with three periods doesn't appear to be ruled out by WP:NC-PERIOD. A simple title would be "By symmetry" (no italics) but the initial capital letter would be incorrect (although it could use Template:lowercase title), and the simple title might give an incorrect impression of the contents of the article. I would glad to receive any feedback on the correct title to use. Thanks GreatStellatedDodecahedron (talk) 13:22, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

First, who is this "we" you refer to? Is 'Vbmulfex' a shared account?
See WP:NARTIST and WP:Golden Rule. I mean it, click on those links and read them, they aren't long. If the artist meets WP:NARTIST criteria, and you can find multiple sources that each meet all the WP:Golden Rule criteria, then yes, you can write a draft and submit it for review.
If the artist doesn't meet any notability criteria, and/or you cannot find 'golden rule' sources, then you're wasting your time writing the draft, and you're wasting valuable donated reviewer time too. Please don't waste either one. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 18:43, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
@Vbmuflex: How "new" are they? If they're so new that mainstream press hasn't taken notice of them yet, then it's likely way too soon for them to have an article. Also please note that creating a brand new article is one of the absolutely hardest things to do on Wikipedia, and it is strongly recommended that a new editor such as yourself spend at least several weeks doing smaller tasks on existing articles and familiarizing themselves with Wikipedia's policies and procedures before attempting to create something new. Hope this helps, and feel free to ask further questions. Thanks, and happy editing! --Finngall talk 19:10, 22 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Blurred to me in the article too. The file on Commons has two resolutions, this one described as a thumbnail and a slightly larger and much clearer one, which themselves are extracted from another Commons file of the original framed image with three resolutions. I'm not experienced with images on Wikipedia, but I see no reason for the thumbnail image to be used in the article. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} ~2026-76101-8 (talk) 06:03, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I understand, the standard way of doing images on Wikipedia will always pull a thumbnail rather than the original image, technically. It is worth noting ALL thumbnails of this image, including ones I just tried to regenerate, are coming out blurry. It looks fine to me in the article, but if I click on it and scroll down, the thumbnail is blurry. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 06:25, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
MediaWiki usually offers multiple resolutions to browsers by using srcset. The HTML in this case says for me:
<img src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7e/Officers_at_the_Staff_College%2C_Camberley%2C_1897_%28cropped%29.png/250px-Officers_at_the_Staff_College%2C_Camberley%2C_1897_%28cropped%29.png" decoding="async" width="250" height="193" class="mw-file-element" srcset="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7e/Officers_at_the_Staff_College%2C_Camberley%2C_1897_%28cropped%29.png 2x" data-file-width="454" data-file-height="350">
I have 250px as thumbnail size at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. The 250px src version https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7e/Officers_at_the_Staff_College%2C_Camberley%2C_1897_%28cropped%29.png/250px-Officers_at_the_Staff_College%2C_Camberley%2C_1897_%28cropped%29.png is blurry for me. The larger srcset version is the original upload https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7e/Officers_at_the_Staff_College%2C_Camberley%2C_1897_%28cropped%29.png which looks good to me. The browser picks depending on circumstances so that explains why it varies whether we see a blurry version in the article. srcset would usually have been twice as wide but that would give 500px here and the original is only 454px so you get that instead. I suspect all MediaWiki resizings of this image will be blurry but I don't know why. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:58, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like an AI wrote it, not a human, and that is prohibited on Wikipedia. You (or the AI) are removing valid citations, adding large swaths of material citing unreliable sources like Ballotpedia, and generally editing as if you're associated with the subject, writing what the subject wants the world to know instead of what reliable sources say. If you have a conflict of interest, you must propose changes on the article talk page. In Pashto Wikipedia, when we use a template in other templates, it gives a problem that the first letter of the template is not included, due to which the template does not work either. I am providing an example here as a link

@Paul W: I don't know your normal way but if you want to keep draft edits in the history after a move then you can work on a draft in a new subpage like User:Paul W/Bury F.C. financial crisis or Draft:Bury F.C. financial crisis. If you started in an old sandbox and want to separate the edit histories then an administrator is required to make a history split but it's easy to mess up. Thanks for that, PrimeHunter. I don't personally create many articles these days (I do a lot of expanding and updating/improving, with occasional content forking (like the Bury F.C. article today), plus regular work on other people's drafts at AfC). I used to start by creating a redlink, but that can get messy if others jump in and cause edit conflicts. After today's experience, I will certainly rethink my approach next time! Good evening. I just want to ask: why are YouTube links blacklisted? ~2026-22534-68 (talk) 18:57, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

They aren't. Shortcuts are blacklisted, such as youtu.be. Why do you ask? ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 19:15, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
They are not. https:/youtu.be links are as those are using the share feature and are a redirect. https://youtube.com is not blacklisted. - coolgurl5555 ✈︎ (she/her) ✈︎ 19:16, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

This is Wikipedia, not an AI chatbot. And AI writing isn't permitted on Wikipedia. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 19:16, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, text by LLMs is allowed as long as the content is verified, is it not? - coolgurl5555 ✈︎ (she/her) ✈︎ 19:17, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The LLMs themselves say it's allowed, but they don't really know Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and actively coach people to circumvent them. So no, we really don't allow it. See WP:NEWLLM, which prohibits LLM output in article content, and WP:AITALK which says AI-generated talk page comments may be struck or collapsed.
"Verified" is only part of it. Even if an AI writes factual information, the tone, emphasis, phrasing, and sourcing often leave much to be desired. ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 19:25, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to update the dead link for a band's website on the article infobox to point to the archived version while preserving the original url in the anchor text.

What would be the best way to do this? Is there a url template that supports additional properties similar to {{cite web}} that preserves similar metadata?

As of now, I'm leaning towards using the external link syntax that points to the archived site using the original as anchor text, and adding an additional citation like so:

kottonmouthkings.com [1]

Thoughts? User:Eulersidentity (talk) 19:46, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me. You correctly used archive.org rather than archive dot today (which is now against policy due to DDoSing drama or something). I might only suggest that the title field containing the '|' character strikes me as awkward, and the repetition of string "Kottonmouth Kings" in the citation seems unnecessary or inelegant. You might not even need a citation, given that you're just linking to it in a template, not making a claim that needs a source. The link by itself, as you present it, seems fine without the superscript reference, in my opinion. 1101 (talk) 20:17, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your feedback! After reviewing the citation style guide again, I wound up removing the work property to address the redundancy as its intended use case is only to denote the publisher/journal of cited articles.
While the citation itself doesn't provide any additional value to to the end user, I elected to keep it for the value it adds in providing context to editors on the backend as to why the implementation is necessary and in keeping track of the archived version for those who may wish to choose a better candidate than the one I selected at random. Anyway, here is the final form:

Or catch the attention of an administrator in order to resolve or apply the result of a productive discussion urging change to an image in a template for the subject of artificial intelligence. 1101 (talk) 20:07, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a consensus in that discussion, except maybe that it's valid that electronic representations of human anatomy would probably be inappropriate.
I note that the Intelligence article has no infobox, simply a Greek Ψ symbol for the psychology portal. Would there be something analogous for "artificial" intelligence?
Personally, after experiencing dialogues with LLM chatbots, I'm leaning in favor of using the lead image in the sycophancy article, but I know that would never be approved! ~Anachronist (who / me) (talk) 23:52, 23 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
1101, Template:Artificial intelligence does not appear to be protected, so anyone can edit it, but obviously it is advisable to get consensus first. Where an article is protected, you can select view source and then there is generally a button to "Submit an edit request". TSventon (talk) 13:44, 24 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

You only list one. There is another, smaller but much much older, at the top of Clear Lake. Why don’t you add it? Zxzxma (talk) 01:16, 24 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Zxzxma, I see an article about Tule Island, but which list are you talking about? And when you say "you": Do you mean (for example) me? If so, no, I'm not adding an article about a second Tule Island, for a variety of reasons; but if you can cite reliable sources for this second Tule Island, then you're as free as I am to summarize those sources and use what you have to create Draft:Tule Island (Clear Lake). Later, such a draft, if it's any good, can be promoted to article status (and its title adjusted if appropriate). -- Hoary (talk) 01:52, 24 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The infobox in Clear Lake (California) has a Tule Island in the list of islands but the article says nothing about it so I'm not sure it's worth mentioning in Tule Island. A normal hatnote at top of the article would say something like:
But the hatnote itself already says as much as the linked article: It's an island in Clear Lake. Maybe an alternative hatnote which doesn't imply that you can see more:

Is there a way to have one [[File:name.jpg|thumb|Description]] element, which is capable of displaying multiple photos from a defined set with user input?

E.g. for an article section I'm working on, I want this photo as the primary, but in the same position with scrolling options I want to also show photo 2, photo 3, or photo 4. Each photo represents a distinct period of the attached history paragraph, but they take up too much space if they're all displayed and it's hard to see the boundary between this set and similar sets for other locomotives which also should have a distinct series. If a fixed primary with scrolling extras isn't possible, an automated slideshow between the four photos would be an acceptable compromise.

I have questions about Wikipedia's blocking policy. I realize that I've made dozens of spelling errors with my DEFAULTSORT edits all of which were easily fixed. But all my edits are always clearly in good faith and I've never vandalized a single page. But now I'm being threatened with being blocked any slight error I may make.Vincelord (talk) 17:13, 24 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like you're being threatened with a block because you are repeatedly making many typos in your DEFAULTSORT edits. These may not be intentional, but the fact that you continue making the same mistake over and over indicates carelessness; @Tom.Reding has left you multiple messages on your talk page and you haven't replied. If you're on a PC, it's usually Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste. Just highlight the name, hit Ctrl+C. "After reading it, Washington ordered that it be read by his Continental Army troops, who were demoralized following recent military defeats."

I'm fairly sure this sentence (from the US DofI entry) is incorrect, or at least at variance with most historical takes. It appears to me that it's confusing "Common Sense" with Paine's "American Crisis No. 1"—which is in many accounts stated to have been read on Washington's order to troops before crossing the Delaware to attack Trenton (Christmas 1776). Even that, however, lacks evidence to have actually happened, as opposed to oft-repeated folk tale. See this article in Journal of the American Revolution: https://allthingsliberty.com/2015/02/american-crisis-before-crossing-the-delaware/

The main text of the article, which is well referenced, seems to be fairly neutral in tone (assuming all the cited facts are actually correct, which I have not checked). However, the lede does have an acclamatory and purple tone to it: "acclaimed", "one of the most influential", "he forged a recording contract", " a celebrated Tejano singer", "garnered him a nomination".
Xo4v, I think you would be justified in toning down these and perhaps other expressions, in preference to trying to get the Good Article categorization removed, which requires a formal process, not just one user removing the article from the Category.
