mediawiki2latex
is a tool that converts wiki content into the formats of LaTeX, PDF, ODT, and EPUB. The code now runs many times faster due to recent improvements. There is also an optional Docker container you can
install
on your local machine.
The way that Random pages are selected has been updated. This will slowly reduce the problem of some pages having a lower chance of appearing.

Reusing references: Can we look over your shoulder?
edit
Apologies for writing in English.
The Technical Wishes team at Wikimedia Deutschland is planning to
make reusing references easier
. For our research, we are looking for wiki contributors willing to show us how they are interacting with references.
The format will be a 1-hour video call, where you would share your screen.
More information here
Interviews can be conducted in English, German or Dutch.
Compensation is available
Sessions will be held in January and February.
Sign up here if you are interested.
Please note that we probably won’t be able to have sessions with everyone who is interested. Our UX researcher will try to create a good balance of wiki contributors, e.g. in terms of wiki experience, tech experience, editing preferences, gender, disability and more. If you’re a fit, she will reach out to you to schedule an appointment.
We’re looking forward to seeing you,

The

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees 2024 Selection
edit
You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.
More languages
Please help translate to your language
Dear all,
This year, the term of 4 (four) Community- and Affiliate-selected Trustees on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees will come to an end [1]. The Board invites the whole movement to participate in this year’s selection process and vote to fill those seats.
The
Elections Committee
will oversee this process with support from Foundation staff [2]. The Board Governance Committee created a Board Selection Working Group from Trustees who cannot be candidates in the 2024 community- and affiliate-selected trustee selection process composed of Dariusz Jemielniak, Nataliia Tymkiv, Esra'a Al Shafei, Kathy Collins, and Shani Evenstein Sigalov [3]. The group is tasked with providing Board oversight for the 2024 trustee selection process, and for keeping the Board informed. More details on the roles of the Elections Committee, Board, and staff are here [4].
Here are the key planned dates:
May 2024: Call for candidates and call for questions
June 2024: Affiliates vote to shortlist 12 candidates (no shortlisting if 15 or less candidates apply) [5]
June-August 2024: Campaign period
End of August / beginning of September 2024: Two-week community voting period
October–November 2024: Background check of selected candidates
Board's Meeting in December 2024: New trustees seated
Learn more about the 2024 selection process - including the detailed timeline, the candidacy process, the campaign rules, and the voter eligibility criteria - on
this Meta-wiki page
, and make your plan.
Election Volunteers
Another way to be involved with the 2024 selection process is to be an Election Volunteer. Election Volunteers are a bridge between the Elections Committee and their respective community. They help ensure their community is represented and mobilize them to vote. Learn more about the program and how to join on this
Meta-wiki page
Best regards,
Dariusz Jemielniak
(Governance Committee Chair, Board Selection Working Group)
[1]
[2]
[3]
[4]
[5] Even though the ideal number is 12 candidates for 4 open seats, the shortlisting process will be triggered if there are more than 15 candidates because the 1-3 candidates that are removed might feel ostracized and it would be a lot of work for affiliates to carry out the shortlisting process to only eliminate 1-3 candidates from the candidate list.

Switching to the Vector 2022 skin
edit
Hi everyone. We are the
Wikimedia Foundation Web team
. As you may have read in our previous messages across wikis or
here in June 2022
, we have been getting closer to switching every wiki to the Vector 2022 skin as the new default. In our previous conversations with Wikisource communities, we had identified an issue with the Index namespace that prevented switching the skin on.
This issue is now resolved
We are now ready to continue and will be deploying on multilingual Wikisource on Wednesday
April 3, 2024
To learn more about the new skin and what improvements it introduces when compared to the legacy 2010 Vector skin, please
see our documentation
. If you have any issues with the skin after the deployment, if you spot any gadgets not working, or notice any bugs – please contact us! We are also open to joining events like the
Wikisource Community meetings
and talking to you directly. Thank you,

The
Wikimedia Foundation
will switch the traffic between its data centers. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster.
All traffic will switch on
20 March
. The test will start at
14:00 UTC
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in
MediaWiki
, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.
You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Wednesday 20 March 2024.
If you try to edit or save during these times, you will see an error message. We hope that no edits will be lost during these minutes, but we can't guarantee it. If you see the error message, then please wait until everything is back to normal. Then you should be able to save your edit. But, we recommend that you make a copy of your changes first, just in case.
Other effects
Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped. Red links might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual. Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
We expect the code deployments to happen as any other week. However, some case-by-case code freezes could punctually happen if the operation require them afterwards.
GitLab
will be unavailable for about 90 minutes.
This project may be postponed if necessary. You can
read the schedule at wikitech.wikimedia.org
. Any changes will be announced in the schedule. There will be more notifications about this. A banner will be displayed on all wikis 30 minutes before this operation happens.
Please share this information with your community.

Template:Header
is broken
edit
Looks like the
Template:Header
is somewhat broken: errors are displayed on the template page:
Lua error in Module:Header/year at line 432: bad argument #2 to 'inNamespaces' (unrecognized namespace number '114').Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Submit an edit request' not found.
Also, there is an error on author's pages, for example:
Author:Antoine Meyer
, also many (or all) other pages -- error is displayed (in the upper right corner):
Script error: The function "interprojetPart" does not exist.
I guess, all these things happened after recent multiple imports of templates and modules done by
User:Koavf
. I think, these error should be fixed, or those imports should be rollbacked (I don't understand why to import so much stuff from another wikisource without any confidence that they would work here, on the multilang-WS, which has completely different set of tools and settings). --

Dang. I was afraid of this and I looked at the transclusions to see if anything broke. I also looked to see if there is any way to "un-import" in MediaWiki and I didn't find one other than to restore from a database, which seems excessive. I'm open to any instruction on how I can fix this directly. As you can see at
Special:Log/import
, the following were imported from en.ws:
Module:Header/sort
(4 revisions)
Template:Plain sister/styles.css
(4 revisions)
Module:Header/attribution
(29 revisions)
Module:ISO 639/overrides
(5 revisions)
Template:Header structure/styles.css
(1 revision) (this one is easy to solve: I can just delete it, but only once it's not being called upon by a module/template)
Module:Header structure
(19 revisions)
Module:Header/year
(11 revisions)
Module:Warning
(3 revisions)
Template:License/styles.css
(23 revisions)
Template:Header/styles.css
(20 revisions)
Template:License grammar
(1 revision) (this one is easy to solve: I can just delete it)
Module:License
(60 revisions)
Template:Center/styles.css
(8 revisions) (deleted: all revisions were imported, center below works)
Module:License scope
(40 revisions)
Module:ISO 639
(23 revisions)
Module:Auto parents
(25 revisions)
Template:PD-UN
(34 revisions) (this created a redlink category and all revisions were via en.ws, so it can be deleted. It was
also used on another page
but the template was not previously imported.)
Module:Optional style
(6 revisions)
Template:Optional style
(3 revisions)
Module:TableTools
(10 revisions)
Template:License scope
(8 revisions)
Template:License
(92 revisions)
Module:Plain sister
(15 revisions)
Module:Header
(152 revisions)
Module:Edition
(39 revisions)
Template:Header
(216 revisions)
Template:Center
(7 revisions) (reverted and CSS above deleted--forensics on this one was easy)
Yuunivorshal Deklarieshan a Yuuman Raits
(5 revisions) (this was the goal, importing all the dependencies was an accident)
I see two options:
Reverse engineer each module and template to restore it without the imported revisions (not sure how to do this, but I will try my best)
Import
more
modules/templates to ensure that they all work the same as en.ws. I will work on this should that be what the consensus is.
I really don't know which one is better and I did try to see what issues there were yesterday and I didn't see any at the time. I'm sorry for any problems anyone is experiencing and I'll put forth the effort to undo them or progress the solution. —

Web browsers can use tools called

It seems that you just need to wait for some days until someone figures out what to do in order to resolve the problem. Most likely you wouldn't remove the error by just changing arguments in the template invocation, something else needs to be changed in the template, and/or modules (or other entities) that are used by it. --

[81]
Changes later this week
The
new version
of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 April. It will be on all wikis from 18 April (

[82]
[83]
Default category sort keys
will now affect categories added by templates placed in
footnotes
. Previously footnotes used the page title as the default sort key even if a different default sort key was specified (category-specific sort keys already worked).
[84]
A new variable
page_last_edit_age
will be added to
abuse filters
. It tells how many seconds ago the last edit to a page was made.
[85]
Future changes
Volunteer developers are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle
temporary accounts
Four database fields will be removed from database replicas (including
Quarry
). This affects only the
abuse_filter
and
abuse_filter_history
tables. Some queries might need to be updated.

The appearance of talk pages changed for the following wikis: Azerbaijani Wikipedia, Bengali Wikipedia, German Wikipedia, Persian Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Korean Wikipedia, Dutch Wikipedia, Portuguese Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia, Thai Wikipedia, Turkish Wikipedia, Ukrainian Wikipedia, Vietnamese Wikipedia. These wikis participated to a test, where 50% of users got the new design, for one year. As this test
gave positive results
, the new design is deployed on these wikis as the default design. It is possible to opt-out these changes
in user preferences

Recent changes
On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word
to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list.
[111]
If you use the
user-preference
"Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template" will now also work without reloading the page.
[112]
Kartographer
maps can now specify an alternative text via the
alt=
attribute. This is identical in usage to the
alt=
attribute in the
image and gallery syntax
. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive.
[113]
The old
Guided Tour
for the "
New Filters for Edit Review
" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people.
[114]
Changes later this week
The
new version
of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (
calendar
).
[115]
[116]
The
Special:Search
results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure.
[117]
Future changes
In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022.
[118]
Two columns of the
pagelinks
database table (
pl_namespace
and
pl_title
) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the new
linktarget
table instead (
lt_namespace
and
lt_title
). In your existing SQL queries:
Replace
JOIN pagelinks
with
JOIN linktarget
and
pl_
with
lt_
in the
ON
statement
Below that add
JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl_target_id
See
phab:T222224
for technical reasoning.

Sign up for the language community meeting on May 31st, 16:00 UTC
edit
Hello all,
The next language community meeting is scheduled in a few weeks - May 31st at 16:00 UTC. If you're interested, you can
sign up on this wiki page
This is a participant-driven meeting, where we share language-specific updates related to various projects, collectively discuss technical issues related to language wikis, and work together to find possible solutions. For example, in the last meeting, the topics included the machine translation service (MinT) and the languages and models it currently supports, localization efforts from the Kiwix team, and technical challenges with numerical sorting in files used on Bengali Wikisource.
Do you have any ideas for topics to share technical updates related to your project? Any problems that you would like to bring for discussion during the meeting? Do you need interpretation support from English to another language? Please reach out to me at ssethi(__AT__)wikimedia.org and
add agenda items to the document here
We look forward to your participation!

Dear community members,
The
Community Affairs Committee
(CAC) of the
Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees
invites you to give feedback on a
draft Procedure for Sibling Project Lifecycle
. This draft Procedure outlines proposed steps and requirements for opening and closing Wikimedia Sibling Projects, and aims to ensure any newly approved projects are set up for success. This is separate from the procedures for opening or closing language versions of projects, which is handled by the
Language Committee
or
closing projects policy
You can find the details on
this page
, as well as the ways to give your feedback from today until the end of the day on
June 23, 2024
, anywhere on Earth.
You can also share information about this with the interested project communities you work with or support, and you can also help us translate the procedure into more languages, so people can join the discussions in their own language.

User not here to build a better free library

As I am willing to eventually process
Wikisource:Proposed deletions#Wikisource:Jimbo Wales against attacks on userpages

please
note why @

not have been here
to build a better free library? Imagine how bad repetitively reverting the well sourced deadminship four times to illegally keep the adminship on Chinese Wikisource

would be. This may tempt some users from Chinese Wikisource to "seek asylum" here, like
Wikisource:Proposed deletions#All documents uploaded by User:Sowhat666
that I will further examine.
Thanks
to all of my dear fellow administrators for not deleting either controversial request too fast. Having worked together here for so many years has been so nice.
Sorry
for the bad story from Chinese Wikisource spreading here and the delay posting this section as I was busier elsewhere with more important things, including administering 13 wikis. Hopefully things will get better. but we need more time seeking more effective supports.--

Problems with subpages
edit
Today I noticed that some problems appeared on newly-created subpages, for example:
Якстере теште/1924/25/Не тевтнеде парстэ эряви содамс волисполкомтнэнень
, also recently edited subpages, for example
Якстере теште/1924/06/Месть корты эрзянь аграном
Category 'Subpages' appeared in the page's categories list, since there are no such category in the Wikisource for now, that category is "red"
The subpage page is not included in the year category
Category:1924 works
, as I expected
It seems to me that it is somewhat connected with recently implemented changes announced and discussed in the topic above:
Relative paths
. Also, it should be noticed that such problems have not yet occurred on similar pages (of the same newspaper) — for example
Якстере теште/1924/25/"Кода сюронь тефне молить"
: that page does not have "red" category 'Subpages' and it is still included in the Category:1924 works.
Can someone comment on these issues (and fix it, if it is possible and needed)?
Jon Harald Søby
: since you created that change: could you be of help with these problems? --

reply
Nigmont
: Well, it is and isn't related. All of these category changes actually come from
Template:Header-myv
(which you created, but it seems you copied it from
Template:Header
), and that template has checks (via
Template:Is subpage
) for whether or not a page is a subpage, and categorizes differently based on that. I haven't looked into who added that when, but it must have been intentional (but non-functional on this wiki until the subpages were enabled) – if we want, we can remove those checks to get the "old" behaviour back.

reply
Jon Harald Søby
: thanks for explanation. Yes, you are right: I created that template as a copy (partial) from
Template:Header
, so it inherited some behavior of that template. I resolved these problems — I created hidden
Category:Subpages
so it is not displayed on the content pages; and I removed in
Template:Header-myv
piece of code which had suppressed categorizing subpages in year categories. So it seems to be fine now.

Over the next three weeks, dark mode will become available for all users, both logged-in and logged-out, starting with the mobile web version. This fulfils one of the
top-requested community wishes
, and improves low-contrast reading and usage in low-light settings. As part of these changes, dark mode will also work on User-pages and Portals. There is more information in
the latest Web team update
[161]
Logged-in users can now set
global preferences for the text-size and dark-mode
, thanks to a combined effort across Foundation teams. This allows Wikimedians using multiple wikis to set up a consistent reading experience easily, for example by switching between light and dark mode only once for all wikis.
[162]
If you use a very old web browser some features might not work on the Wikimedia wikis. This affects Internet Explorer 11 and versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari older than 2016. This change makes it possible to use new

Gerrit and GitLab are both code repositories used by developers to write, review, and deploy the software code that supports the MediaWiki software that the wiki projects are built on, as well as the tools used by editors to create and improve content. This decision will safeguard the productivity of our developers and prevent problems in code review from affecting our users. More details are available in the

Hello everyone,
After carefully tallying both individual and affiliate votes, the
Charter Electoral Commission
is pleased to announce the final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter voting.
As
communicated
by the Charter Electoral Commission, we reached the quorum for both Affiliate and individual votes by the time the vote closed on
July 9, 23:59 UTC
. We thank all 2,451 individuals and 129 Affiliate representatives who voted in the ratification process. Your votes and comments are invaluable for the future steps in Movement Strategy.
The final results of the
Wikimedia Movement Charter
ratification voting held between 25 June and 9 July 2024 are as follows:
Individual vote:
Out of 2,451 individuals who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 2,446 have been accepted as valid votes. Among these,
1,710
voted “yes”;
623
voted “no”; and
113
selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 73.30% voted to approve the Charter (1710/2333), while 26.70% voted to reject the Charter (623/2333).
Affiliates vote:
Out of 129 Affiliates designated voters who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 129 votes are confirmed as valid votes. Among these,
93
voted “yes”;
18
voted “no”; and
18
selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 83.78% voted to approve the Charter (93/111), while 16.22% voted to reject the Charter (18/111).
Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation:
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees voted
not to ratify
the proposed Charter during their special Board meeting on July 8, 2024. The Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, Nataliia Tymkiv,
shared the result of the vote, the resolution, meeting minutes and proposed next steps
With this, the Wikimedia Movement Charter in its current revision is
not ratified
We thank you for your participation in this important moment in our movement’s governance.

Stewards can now
globally block
accounts. Before
the change
only IP addresses and IP ranges could be blocked globally. Global account blocks are useful when the blocked user should not be logged out.
Global locks
(a similar tool logging the user out of their account) are unaffected by this change. The new global account block feature is related to the
Temporary Accounts
project, which is a new type of user account that replaces IP addresses of unregistered editors that are no longer made public.
Later this week, Wikimedia site users will notice that the Interface of
FlaggedRevs

Wikimedia's design system

Minerva skin
was inconsistent before it was fixed and ported to

Wikimedia site users can now submit account vanishing requests via
GlobalVanishRequest
. This feature is used when a contributor wishes to stop editing forever. It helps you hide your past association and edit to protect your privacy. Once processed, the account will be locked and renamed.

Have you tried monitoring and addressing vandalism in Wikipedia using your phone?
A Diff blog post on Patrolling features in the Mobile App
highlights some of the new capabilities of the feature, including swiping through a feed of recent changes and a personal library of user talk messages for use when patrolling from your phone.
Wikimedia contributors and GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) organisations can now learn and measure the impact Wikimedia Commons is having towards creating quality encyclopedic content using the
Commons Impact Metrics
analytics dashboard. The dashboard offers organizations analytics on things like monthly edits in a category, the most viewed files, and which Wikimedia articles are using Commons images. As a result of these new data dumps, GLAM organisation can more reliably measure their return on investment for programs bringing content into the digital Commons.

Come share your ideas for improving the wikis on the newly reopened
Community Wishlist
. The Community Wishlist is Wikimedia’s forum for volunteers to share ideas (called wishes) to improve how the wikis work. The new version of the wishlist is always open, works with both wikitext and Visual Editor, and allows wishes in any language.
Have you ever wondered how Wikimedia software works across over 300 languages? This is 253 languages more than the Google Chrome interface, and it's no accident. The Language and Product Localization Team at the Wikimedia Foundation supports your work by adapting all the tools and interfaces in the MediaWiki software so that contributors in our movement who translate pages and strings can translate them and have the sites in all languages. How to change the language of a page?
edit
Example:
When I click on the page information link on the left menu, it says the page is in English, but it seems that is incorrect and in another language that I do not see listed anywhere in sidebars, header, footer?
Shouldn't there be a much better presentation of the "Language: xxxxxx" somewhere on pages to make it easier to understand which language a page's content is really in?

Changing the language or content model of a page is something limited to users with advanced permissions. Since I am an admin, I changed it to Swahili from English, which is the default for all pages on this wiki. —

Coming soon: A new sub-referencing feature – try it!

Hello. For many years, community members have requested an easy way to re-use references with different details. Bugs status
Your help is needed to check if any pages need to be moved or deleted. A maintenance script was run to clean up unreachable pages (due to Unicode issues or introduction of new namespaces/namespace aliases). The script tried to find appropriate names for the pages (e.g. by following the Unicode changes or by moving pages whose titles on Wikipedia start with
Talk:WP:
so that their titles start with
Wikipedia talk:
), but it may have failed for some pages, and moved them to
Special:PrefixIndex/T195546/
instead. Your community should check if any pages are listed there, and move them to the correct titles, or delete them if they are no longer needed. A full log (including pages for which appropriate names could be found) is available in

Editors who volunteer as

The application deadline for the
Product & Technology Advisory Council
(PTAC) has been extended to September 16. Admin intervention needed for user page vandalism
edit
A user
has posted on the
Administrators Noticeboard
on enWS looking for administrator assistance here on mulWS. Since mulWS lacks a dedicated admin noticeboard they were unable to locate the appropriate venue here.
The user's user page has been targeted by a vandal (as was previously their user talk page) with fairly distasteful (if obviously false) insults. I have edited it to hide the old revision, but the page needs to be deleted (it has no other history) and both the user page and user talk page semi-protected ("Allow only autoconfirmed") from being created (aka. "salted"). They state in their enWS AN post that they do not plan to be active on this project in the near future so semi-protection (or even fully-protected) user pages should be no inconvenience to anyone.

Re: Switching to the Vector 2022 skin
edit
A two minute-long video about Vector 2022
Hello everyone, I'm reaching out on behalf of the
Wikimedia Foundation Web team
responsible for the MediaWiki skins. I'd like to revisit the topic of making Vector 2022 the default here on multilingual Wikisource. I
did post a message about this in March
, but we didn't finalize it back then.
What happened in the meantime? We built
dark mode and different options for font sizes
and made Vector 2022 the default on most wikis. With the not-so-new V22 skin being the default, existing and coming features, like dark mode and
temporary accounts
respectively, will become available for logged-out users here.
So, if no large concerns are raised, we will deploy Vector 2022 here in two weeks, in the week of September 16. Do let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Feature news
Starting this week, the standard
syntax highlighter
will receive new colors that make them compatible in dark mode. This is the first of many changes to come as part of a major upgrade to syntax highlighting. You can learn more about what's to come on the
help page
[184]
[185]
Editors of wikis using Wikidata will now be notified of only relevant Wikidata changes in their watchlist. This is because the Lua functions
entity:getSitelink()
and
mw.wikibase.getSitelink(qid)
will have their logic unified for tracking different aspects of sitelinks to reduce junk notifications from
inconsistent sitelinks tracking
[186]
Project updates
Users of all Wikis will have access to Wikimedia sites as read-only for a few minutes on September 25, starting at 15:00 UTC. This is a planned datacenter switchover for maintenance purposes. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks.

Contributors of
11 Wikipedias
, including English will have a new
MOS
namespace added to their Wikipedias. This improvement ensures that links beginning with
MOS:

Manual of Style
) are not broken by
Mooré
Wikipedia (language code

Improvements and Maintenance
Editors interested in templates can help by reading the latest Wishlist focus area,
Template recall and discovery
, and share your feedback on the talkpage. This input helps the Community Tech team to decide the right technical approach to build. Everyone is also encouraged to continue adding
new wishes
The new automated
Special:NamespaceInfo
page helps editors understand which
namespaces
exist on each wiki, and some details about how they are configured. Thanks to DannyS712 for these improvements.
[189]
References Check
is a feature that encourages editors to add a citation when they add a new paragraph to a Wikipedia article. For a short time, the corresponding tag "Edit Check (references) activated" was erroneously being applied to some edits outside of the main namespace. This has been fixed.
[190]
It is now possible for a wiki community to change the order in which a page’s categories are displayed on their wiki. By default, categories are displayed in the order they appear in the wikitext. Now, wikis with a consensus to do so can
request
a configuration change to display them in alphabetical order.
[191]
Tool authors can now access ToolsDB's
public databases
from both
Quarry
and
Superset
. Those databases have always been accessible to every
Toolforge
user, but they are now more broadly accessible, as Quarry can be accessed by anyone with a Wikimedia account. In addition, Quarry's internal database can now be
queried from Quarry itself
. This database contains information about all queries that are being run and starred by users in Quarry. This information was already public through the web interface, but you can now query it using SQL. You can read more about that, and 20 other community-submitted tasks that were
resolved last week
Any pages or tools that still use the very old CSS classes
mw-message-box
need to be updated. These old classes will be removed next week or soon afterwards. Editors can use a
global-search
to determine what needs to be changed. It is possible to use the newer
cdx-message
group of classes as a replacement (see
the relevant Codex documentation
, and
an example update
), but using locally defined onwiki classes would be best.
[192]
Technical project updates
Next week, all Wikimedia wikis will be read-only for a few minutes. This will start on September 25 at
15:00 UTC
. This is a planned datacenter switchover for maintenance purposes.
This maintenance process also targets other services.
The previous switchover took 3 minutes, and the Site Reliability Engineering teams use many tools to make sure that this essential maintenance work happens as quickly as possible.

The
Wikimedia Foundation
will switch the traffic between its data centers. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster.
All traffic will switch on
25 September
. The switch will start at
15:00 UTC
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in
MediaWiki
, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
A banner will be displayed on all wikis 30 minutes before this operation happens. This banner will remain visible until the end of the operation.
You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.
You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Wednesday 25 September 2024.
Please share this information with your community.

The
server switch
was completed successfully last week with a read-only time of
only 2 minutes 46 seconds
. This periodic process makes sure that engineers can switch data centers and keep all of the wikis available for readers, even if there are major technical issues. It also gives engineers a chance to do maintenance and upgrades on systems that normally run 24 hours a day, and often helps to reveal weaknesses in the infrastructure. The process involves dozens of software services and hundreds of hardware servers, and requires multiple teams working together. Work over the past few years has reduced the time from 17 minutes down to 2–3 minutes.

It is now possible to create functions on Wikifunctions using Wikidata lexemes, through the new
Wikidata lexeme type
launched last week. When you go to one of these functions, the user interface provides a lexeme selector that helps you pick a lexeme from Wikidata that matches the word you type. After hitting run, your selected lexeme is retrieved from Wikidata, transformed into a Wikidata lexeme type, and passed into the selected function. Read more about this in
the latest Wikifunctions newsletter
Updates for technical contributors
Users of the Wikimedia sites can now format dates more easily in different languages with the new

parser function. For example,

will show as "
13 April 2026
". Previously,

could be used to format dates, but this required knowledge of the order of the time and date components and their intervening punctuation.
#timef
(or
#timefl
for local time) provides access to the standard date formats that MediaWiki uses in its user interface. This may help to simplify some templates on multi-lingual wikis like Commons and Meta.
[220]
[221]
Commons and Meta users can now efficiently
retrieve the user's language
using
USERLANGUAGE
instead of using

'Wikidata item' link is moving, finally.
edit
Hello everyone, I previously wrote on the 27th September to advise that the
Wikidata item
sitelink will change places in the sidebar menu, moving from the
General
section into the
In Other Projects
section. The scheduled rollout date of 04.10.2024 was delayed due to a necessary request for Mobile/MinervaNeue skin. I am happy to inform that the global rollout can now proceed and will occur later today, 22.10.2024 at 15:00 UTC-2.
Please let us know
if you notice any problems or bugs after this change. There should be no need for null-edits or purging cache for the changes to occur. Kind regards, -

Update on language categorisation
edit
I want to suggest, to admins and other fellow editors, an overhaul to how the categorisation of languages currently work. currently, all the languages have no cohesive naming system, some have the language code, some have the native name, some have the English name, some have a combination of the previous three.
I propose taking inspiration from English Wiktionary and have language codes mark these pages. category titles may be "xx:title", where xx is a specific language code. similarly, for page translations (like the main page), it may be "page/xx". some examples:
Category:Af Afrikaans (Afrikaans)
→
Category:Autores in sardu
→
Main Page/Shqip
→ Main Page/sq
the titles themselves may be in the native language or, maybe less ideally to some, in English. the examples above are in English because I don't speak Afrikaans or Sardinian.

I have argued in favor of standardizing and landed on the "Language code/native name/English name" standard you have for Afrikaans. Others thought that unilaterally imposing a standard was not wise, so I stopped. I am in favor of more-or-less any scheme that makes these consistent. —

I'm definitely in favor of some form of standardization using the language code, which is the most unambiguous way of identifying a language. —

I'm in favour of standardisation, but I'd advise against using "code:English" (like sc:Authors). In many case, the languages will get their own domain later on, and that would require moving everything to the native title after importing, which is a horrendously demotivating hurdle to get over.
I personally like the way Incubator does it, simply: code/title (like sc/Autores). This way, you can get all pages of a single language in the PrefixIndex as well. --

either the Wiktionary- or Incubator-styles are good. I would accept either one. and that's a good note that I was thinking about, good to keep it in the native language.

Please note that whether the colon notation (
Category:sc:Authors
) or the slash version (
Category:sc/Autores
) is chosen, they will result in the first letter of the language code being capitalized (hover over the above links to see it). It’s different from what happens on Wiktionary and Incubator because
on Wiktionary, first letters of page titles aren’t capitalized (so that
wikt:author
and
wikt:Author
are different entries), and
on Incubator, the language code is not at the very beginning of the title (it’s prefixed with the project code – which doesn’t make sense on Wikisource, since everything is Wikisource here).
IMHO this doesn’t look nice, although I don’t have any better idea right now. —

Currently both Multilingual Wikisource (

Agreed in pciniple. This was also brought up at
