Synopsis

Li Yu's ci poem: 'Un剪able, unorderable — this is the sorrow of parting.'

Original Text

无言独上西楼,月如钩。寂寞梧桐深院锁清秋。
剪不断,理还乱,是离愁。别是一般滋味在心头。

Wordless, alone I climb the west tower,
The moon like a hook.
Lonely paulownias in the deep courtyard lock the clear autumn.
Cannot be cut, cannot be untangled —
This is the sorrow of parting.

Overview

"Joy of Reunion" was written by Li Yu, the last ruler of Southern Tang, during his captivity. It is one of the most famous expressions of sorrow in Chinese ci poetry.
