Synopsis

"Day and Night" is a 2017 suspense web series with a Douban rating of 8.9, directed by Wang Wei. Pan Yueming plays twin brothers Guan Hongfeng and Guan Hongyu. A massacre makes the younger brother a wanted fugitive, and the twin brothers alternate between day and night to track down the real culprit. Pan Yueming's textbook-level dual-role performance stunned the industry, making the series a milestone in domestic web dramas.

Overview

Day and Night is a suspense crime web series that premiered on Youku on August 30, 2017. Directed by Wang Wei and written by Zhiwen and Gu Xiaobai, the series stars Pan Yueming in a dual role as twin brothers Guan Hongfeng and Guan Hongyu. His superb acting captivated both audiences and industry judges. With 32 episodes and a Douban rating of 8.9 (based on over 700,000 reviews), it is considered a milestone in domestic Chinese web series. The show not only sparked a viewing frenzy domestically but was also acquired by Netflix for overseas distribution, becoming one of the first Chinese web series to gain international reach.

The uniqueness of Day and Night lies in its ingenious twin premise. The elder brother, Guan Hongfeng, is the captain of the Criminal Investigation Division—calm, collected, and logical. The younger brother, Guan Hongyu, is a carefree former armed police officer—agile, skilled, and flamboyant. Despite their contrasting personalities, they are forced to share one identity due to a gruesome family massacre: the brother works at the police station during the day, while the younger brother takes over the investigation at night. Pan Yueming had to constantly switch between the two roles, relying solely on subtle differences in facial expressions and body language to allow the audience to clearly distinguish between the brothers—a performance skill that is truly admirable.

Plot

The story begins with a horrifying family massacre. A family of four is brutally murdered at home, and all evidence points to Guan Hongyu (played by Pan Yueming). Guan Hongyu becomes a nationally wanted fugitive, while his twin brother, Guan Hongfeng—captain of the Criminal Investigation Division—firmly believes in his brother's innocence. However, due to the principle of familial recusal, Guan Hongfeng is forced to resign from the police force.

To uncover the truth, the brothers devise a bold plan: during the day, Guan Hongfeng works as a consultant at the police station under his own identity, while at night, Guan Hongyu impersonates his brother to continue the investigation. Because Guan Hongfeng suffers from nyctophobia (a post-traumatic disorder developed after the massacre), he must be replaced by his brother after dark. The two brothers must perfectly impersonate the same person in front of their police colleagues; the slightest slip could expose their identities.

While investigating the truth behind the massacre, Guan Hongfeng uses his professional expertise in criminal investigation to solve a series of cases, each of which seems intricately connected to the massacre. As the investigation deepens, a vast conspiracy involving the police force gradually comes to light.

Cast

Actor Role Description
Pan Yueming Guan Hongfeng / Guan Hongyu Twin brothers; the elder is a criminal investigation captain, the younger is a wanted former armed police officer
Wang Longzheng Zhou Xun Deputy captain of the Criminal Investigation Division, Guan Hongfeng's partner, sharp but rough
Liang Yuan Zhao Xincheng Female forensic doctor, professional and calm, gradually discovers the brothers' secret
Wu Wenjing Han Bin Technical department police officer, excels in data analysis
Lü Xiaolin Gao Yanan Guan Hongyu's girlfriend, loyal and steadfast
Yin Shuyi Zhao Qian New recruit in the police force, full of a sense of justice

Pan Yueming's performance is the core highlight of the series. Portraying dual roles is already highly challenging, but these two roles also require impersonating each other—the elder brother pretending to be the younger, and the younger pretending to be the elder—meaning Pan Yueming essentially had to deliver a four-layered performance. He used subtle differences in facial expressions, walking posture, and speech pace to distinguish the two characters, allowing the audience to clearly know whether it was the elder or younger brother on screen even without subtitles. This performance has been hailed by the industry as a textbook example of dual-role acting.

Cultural Impact

Day and Night is regarded as a significant milestone marking the transition of domestic Chinese web series from low-budget, poorly made productions to high-quality content. Before this series, web series were generally perceived as low-end products with rough production and awkward acting. With its solid script, refined production, and outstanding performances, Day and Night completely changed the audience's stereotypical impression of web series and ushered in a golden age for domestic Chinese web dramas.

After being acquired by Netflix for overseas distribution, the series also received positive reviews in international markets. This was the first time a Chinese suspense web series gained widespread recognition on an international platform, paving the way for subsequent high-quality suspense dramas like The Bad Kids and The Long Night.

Unfortunately, the sequel Daybreak (also known as Day and Night 2), which aired in 2024, received a Douban rating of only 5.9, far lower than the first season, becoming a typical case of a failed sequel.
