It is widely regarded as another peak masterpiece in Chinese television after Empresses in the Palace, acclaimed for both its critical reception and popularity.
The success of Nirvana in Fire lies in its portrayal of political intrigue with an upright and righteous tone. Unlike many scheming dramas filled with deceit and gloom, the theme of Nirvana in Fire is about vindicating the wronged and upholding justice. Although Mei Changsu employs various strategies, his original intention remains to seek justice for the 70,000 loyal souls of the Chiyan Army. This adherence to morality within the power struggles gives Nirvana in Fire a profound depth that transcends the genre.
Plot
Twelve years ago, the 70,000-strong Chiyan Army of the Great Liang Dynasty was tragically framed and annihilated at Meiling. The army's commander, Lin Xie, and his eldest son, Lin Shu, died with grievances—only the young marshal Lin Shu survived by chance but was afflicted with a rare poison, the Fire Cold Poison, which drastically altered his appearance and rendered his martial arts useless.
Twelve years later, Lin Shu, having completely transformed his identity, returns to the imperial capital Jinling as Mei Changsu (Hu Ge), the leader of the Jiangzuo Alliance, in a frail and sickly body. On the surface, he is the top-ranked "Qilin Talent" on the Langya List, but secretly, he is meticulously orchestrating a plan to clear the name of the Chiyan Army and support the upright Prince Jing, Xiao Jingyan (Wang Kai), in ascending the throne.
In Jinling, Mei Changsu faces the overt and covert struggles between the Crown Prince and Prince Yu's factions, as well as the layered defenses set by the head of the Xuanjing Bureau, Xia Jiang, and the scheming Emperor Liang. Relying on extraordinary wisdom and unwavering will, he strategizes amidst the dangers, gradually uncovering the truth behind the Chiyan Army's wrongful case from twelve years ago. Simultaneously, his emotional storyline with his fiancée, Princess Nihuang (Liu Tao), is one of the most touching aspects of the series.
