Synopsis

Hanyu Pinyin is the official Romanization system for Chinese, essential for learning Mandarin pronunciation.

Overview

Hanyu Pinyin is the official Romanization system for Standard Chinese, used to represent the pronunciation of Chinese characters using Latin letters. It serves as the foundational tool for learning Mandarin pronunciation. The pinyin system consists of three components: initials (consonants), finals (vowels), and tones. It is the introductory tool for foreigners learning Chinese and mandatory content for Chinese elementary school literacy education.

Pinyin was officially promulgated by the People's Republic of China in 1958, developed by linguist Zhou Youguang and colleagues. The promotion of pinyin greatly facilitated China's literacy campaign and the popularization of Standard Mandarin.
