Overview

Lychees of Chang'an is a Chinese historical comedy television series set in ancient times, which premiered in 2025. Directed and headlined by the renowned director and actor Da Peng, the series consists of 24 episodes. Set against the backdrop of the prosperous Tang Dynasty capital Chang'an, it blends grand historical narrative with witty and humorous slice-of-life comedy. The story revolves around a legendary tale concerning the precious tribute item, "lychees." After its release, the series received positive feedback from both audiences and critics, earning a rating of 7.8 on Douban. Through the perspective of ordinary people, it vividly portrays the bustling scenery, social customs, and the intricacies of officialdom in Tang Dynasty Chang'an, finding a unique balance between serious historical drama and lighthearted comedy.

Plot

The story takes place during the Tianbao era of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, when the prosperous capital Chang'an appears peaceful and flourishing on the surface. The protagonist, Lin Ashun (played by Da Peng), is a shrewd and calculating fruit merchant in Chang'an's West Market who dreams of making a fortune. By chance, he gets entangled in a commotion caused by the fresh lychees being sent as tribute from Lingnan to Consort Yang. Given the lychee's characteristic of "changing color in one day, aroma in two, and taste in three," transporting fresh lychees from Lingnan (present-day Guangdong area) thousands of miles to Chang'an under the transportation conditions of the time was an almost impossible task.

However, a secret imperial decree inadvertently assigns this "fresh lychee transport" mission to Lin Ashun and his partner—an unrecognized poet named Du Ziqian (played by Bai Ke). To save their lives and seek wealth, the duo must race against time, employing all their wit and connections to navigate between various court ministries, local officials, merchants, and even underworld forces. Along the way, they meet the bold and decisive general's daughter, Gongsun Yue (played by Zhuang Dafei), and the mysterious Lingnan envoy, Asule (played by Liu Junqian). Together, they embark on this perilous and hilarious "lychee express" journey. The series not only depicts this extreme cross-country transportation endeavor but also delves into the choices, friendships, and personal growth of different characters amidst the intertwining of power and profit, using humor to reflect the complex fabric beneath the surface of the prosperous era.

Cultural Impact

After its premiere, Lychees of Chang'an had a positive cultural impact on multiple levels. Firstly, the series successfully adapted the famous line by Tang Dynasty poet Du Mu—"A single rider raises red dust, the consort smiles; None knows it's for the lychees that come a thousand miles"—into a detailed and heartwarming story. This sparked audience curiosity and discussion about Tang Dynasty history, logistics and transportation (the courier station system), and the local customs of Lingnan.

Secondly, the series pioneered a new style of "historical light comedy." Instead of adhering strictly to solemn court narratives, it shifted the perspective to ordinary townsfolk, packaging historical stories with humorous dialogue and plot designs easily accepted by modern audiences. This provided both historical knowledge and an enjoyable viewing experience, offering new creative approaches for historical film and television dramas.

Furthermore, the meticulous recreation of the market scenes, costumes, and food culture of prosperous Tang Chang'an in the series also sparked a wave of interest in traditional Tang culture. Elements such as "Hu-style pancakes," "wine shops," and the "ward and market system" featured in the show became topics of discussion on social media, contributing to the dissemination of related historical and cultural knowledge to some extent.
