Synopsis

The historical drama directed by Suan, the director of The Edge of the Water, focuses on the inhumane atrocities committed by Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army during its invasion of China. In 1992, Xiao Jin, a staff member of the Harbin Unit 731 Exhibition Hall, embarks on a cross-border evidence-gathering journey, gradually uncovering the long-buried historical truth.

Overview

Inhuman Atrocities (also known as 731 and Jing Lan Yue) is a historical drama produced by Youku and Laoyou Pictures, co-produced by Xingfu Lanhai, and directed and written by Suan (Mou Xincen). The series focuses on the inhumane atrocities committed by Unit 731 of the Imperial Japanese Army during its invasion of China. It holds a Douban rating of 8.9, making it the highest-rated Chinese drama of 2025.

The series consists of 20 episodes and premiered exclusively on Youku on December 13, 2025, later airing on Jiangsu Satellite TV. It stars Jiang Qilin, Zhang Yu, Yin Zheng, Lan Xiya, and Han Jing in leading roles, with special appearances by Jiang Qiming, Dong Mushi, An Tian, and Bai En, as well as performances by veteran actors such as Ai Liya.

Plot

The series adopts a dual-timeline narrative structure. One timeline goes back to 1940 in Harbin, revealing the brutal truth of Unit 731's human experiments through the perspectives of three individuals with different identities. The other timeline begins in 1992, when Xiao Jin, a staff member at the Harbin 731 Exhibition Hall, discovers that the historical records of this period are incomplete.

To uncover the truth, Xiao Jin embarks on a跨国取证 (cross-border evidence-gathering) journey spanning decades. In the process of seeking out survivors and witnesses, he gradually pieces together the buried history—over 3,000 Chinese and international victims were used as live experimental subjects, subjected to heinous and inhumane treatment.

Through the interweaving of history and reality, the series portrays the pain of historical truth being concealed and the difficulty of restoring it. During his evidence-gathering, Xiao Jin must not only contend with the fading memories brought by time but also overcome various challenges of cross-border investigation.

Production Background

The series is directed by Suan (Mou Xincen), who previously directed The Edge of the Water. Suan's earlier work The Edge of the Water earned an opening Douban score of 8.1, becoming the highest-rated drama on Douban in 2024. Inhuman Atrocities continues Suan's signature narrative style, employing a dual-timeline structure that closely connects history and reality.

The series is considered the television version of 731, echoing the film of the same name released on September 18, 2025, both exposing the crimes of Unit 731 from different angles. The TV series delves deeper into historical details with its longer runtime, reflecting the weight of history through the fates of its characters.

Reception

Despite having no extensive promotional campaign, Inhuman Atrocities stood out with its solid quality, staging a dark horse comeback. It opened with a Douban score of 8.5, which later climbed to 8.9, making it the highest-rated Chinese drama of 2025.

On its premiere, Jiangsu Satellite TV achieved the top viewership rating. Audience reviews were remarkably unanimous: heavy yet shocking. Some critics noted that the series fills a gap in similar-themed TV dramas, allowing more people to understand this history that should not be forgotten.

Historical Significance

The series artistically reconstructs the inhumane crimes of Unit 731, allowing audiences to more intuitively feel the cruelty of history through the narratives of individual fates. The atrocities depicted, such as live human experiments and frostbite experiments, represent a severe violation of the bottom line of human civilization.

Through the narrative thread of cross-border evidence-gathering, the series reminds viewers of the preciousness and fragility of historical evidence, as well as the importance of remembering history.
