Overview

The Great River Guardian is a 2024 Chinese mainland historical fantasy comedy web series. Directed by Deng Ke, it is adapted from the bestselling web novel of the same name by online author "Newspaper Seller." Set in the fictional "Great River" dynasty, the series blends elements of time travel, detective work, cultivation, and comedy. It tells the story of modern police detective Xu Qi'an, who accidentally travels to a world where Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, demons, and sorcerers coexist. Relying on modern thinking and investigative skills, he starts as a night watchman ("Guardian") and navigates the treacherous imperial court and martial world to solve bizarre cases and seek the truth. The series attracted a specific audience with its lighthearted and humorous style, fast-paced plot, and rich world-building. However, its reception was polarized after airing, earning a 5.6 rating on Douban.

Plot

The story begins with modern elite detective Xu Qi'an (played by Wang Hedi), whose soul travels to the Great River Dynasty due to an accident, becoming a prisoner in the capital facing exile. Using his exceptional wit and modern knowledge, he successfully averts the crisis and, through a twist of fate, joins the "Guardians," an organization responsible for capital security and night patrols. In this world where Confucianism and Taoism flourish, magic is potent, and demons lurk, Xu Qi'an utilizes his professional investigative logic and scientific thinking to solve one strange case after another, from missing tax silver to serial monster killings, gradually making a name for himself.

As the plot deepens, Xu Qi'an finds himself entangled in a vast conspiracy involving court factional struggles, royal secrets, and even forces beyond the mortal realm. He meets Chu Caiwei (played by Tian Xiwei), the daughter of the mysterious Director of the Imperial Astrological Observatory. Aloof and enigmatic, she and Xu Qi'an progress from initial misunderstandings to cooperation, facing numerous crises together. While investigating cases, Xu Qi'an not only gradually adapts to this world's cultivation system but also befriends companions with diverse personalities to confront the mastermind behind the scenes. The series presents individual case arcs while slowly unfolding a main storyline about national destiny and personal growth.

Cultural Impact

As an adaptation of a highly popular web novel, the airing of The Great River Guardian sparked heated discussions among original book fans and series viewers. The series successfully visualized the core appeal of the original work—the clash between modern thinking and an ancient world. The interspersed comedic moments and dense plot twists catered to the fast-paced viewing habits of contemporary online audiences. The pairing of Wang Hedi and Tian Xiwei also attracted considerable attention from young viewers.

However, the simplification of the novel's complex world-building and certain plotlines during adaptation, along with the level of special effects production, became focal points of criticism from some viewers, especially original readers. This is directly reflected in its mediocre Douban rating. Nevertheless, the series still secured a place in the 2024 historical drama market. Its hybrid model of "fantasy + comedy + detective" provides a reference case for the film and television adaptation of similar IPs. The series' popularity also fueled a second wave of interest in reading the original novel, demonstrating the influential synergy between web literature and TV dramas.
