Overview
Nirvana in Fire (琅琊榜) is a 2015 Chinese historical drama television series based on the novel by Hai Yan. Directed by Kong Sheng and Li Xue, it stars Hu Ge as Mei Changsu, a brilliant strategist who returns to the capital under a disguised identity to uncover the truth behind a conspiracy that destroyed his family.
The series premiered on September 19, 2015, and became one of the highest-rated Chinese dramas of all time, earning a Douban rating of 9.4/10. It is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Chinese television storytelling.
Plot
Twelve years before the events of the series, the Chiyan Army — an elite force of 70,000 soldiers — was ambushed and annihilated on the Meiling Ridge due to a treacherous conspiracy orchestrated by corrupt officials. Lin Shu, the young heir to the Chiyan Army and son of the commander, barely survived but was poisoned by the Poison of Biting Flame, which left him chronically ill and changed his appearance entirely.
Reborn as Mei Changsu, the chief of the Jiangzuo Alliance and known across the land as the Divine Talent, he returns to the imperial capital Jinling. His goal: to secretly assist his childhood friend Prince Jing in the succession struggle, while methodically dismantling the corrupt officials responsible for the Chiyan tragedy.

Production
The series was produced by Shandong Film and Television Production Co. and filmed over several months with extensive sets recreating the grandeur of the Liang Dynasty court. The production is noted for its meticulous attention to historical detail in costumes, sets, and protocol.
Cultural Impact
Nirvana in Fire sparked a massive wave of interest in historical Chinese dramas both domestically and internationally. It was exported to numerous countries and helped establish Chinese costume dramas as a global phenomenon. The series spawned a sequel, Nirvana in Fire 2: The Wind Blows in Chang Lin (2017).
