Overview

Joy of Life Season 2 is a historical political drama that premiered simultaneously on Tencent Video and CCTV-8 on May 16, 2024. Directed by Sun Hao and written by Wang Juan, it is adapted from Mao Ni's bestselling novel of the same name. Zhang Ruoyun reprises his role as Fan Xian, with original cast members Li Qin, Chen Daoming, Wu Gang, Tian Yu, Li Xiaoran, and others all returning. New additions to the cast include powerful actors like Yu Feihong, Yuan Quan, and Mao Xiaotong. The series consists of 36 episodes and holds a Douban rating of 7.3.

Season 2 continues the story from the first season. On his way back leading the diplomatic mission, Fan Xian (played by Zhang Ruoyun) is threatened by the Second Prince, who uses the safety of Fei Jie, Fan Sizhe, and the orphan of the Teng family to force Fan Xian to submit to him. Facing numerous crises, Fan Xian continues his legendary journey amidst the power struggles of various factions. Compared to the first season, Season 2 adopts a lighter and more humorous tone, with supporting characters receiving more brilliant moments. Fan Sizhe, played by Guo Qilin, and Wang Qinian, played by Tian Yu, contribute a significant number of comedic scenes.

Plot

Season 2 begins with Fan Xian returning to Southern Qing from Northern Qi with his diplomatic mission. En route, he learns that the Second Prince has set numerous traps for him—Fei Jie is under house arrest, Fan Sizhe is being blackmailed, and the safety of the Teng family orphan is threatened. The Second Prince demands Fan Xian's allegiance, threatening to harm those close to him if he refuses.

Upon returning to Southern Qing, Fan Xian faces an even more complex political landscape. Emperor Qing (played by Chen Daoming) appears to be manipulating everything behind the scenes, pitting Fan Xian against the Second Prince to maintain a balance of power. The Eldest Princess (played by Li Xiaoran) is also scheming in the shadows, attempting to use Fan Xian for her own purposes. Caught in this whirlpool of power, Fan Xian must rely on his own wit and the help of Wang Qinian (played by Tian Yu) and others to navigate the dangers.

Season 2 also delves deeper into the political system of the Qing Kingdom and the legendary story of Fan Xian's mother, Ye Qingmei. Fan Xian gradually uncovers more secrets about his origins, as well as his mother's ideals and struggles in pushing for reforms in the Qing Kingdom. These clues set the stage for the final confrontation in Season 3.

Emperor Qing, portrayed by Chen Daoming, is one of the most captivating characters in the series. On the surface, he appears lazy, casual, and detached from worldly affairs, but in reality, he is the grandmaster behind the entire chessboard. With minimal dialogue and subtle changes in expression, Chen Daoming masterfully portrays the depth and majesty of an emperor.

Wang Qinian, played by Tian Yu, is the most popular character in Season 2. Wang Qinian is a petty, money-loving, and cowardly yet fiercely loyal character whose every appearance brings laughter. Tian Yu perfectly blends the character's worldly shrewdness with endearing qualities, making him the comedic soul of the series.

Reception and Controversy

The reception for Season 2 has declined compared to the first season. The first season holds a Douban rating of 7.9, while Season 2 is rated 7.3. Some viewers feel that Season 2's pacing is slower, the plot is padded with filler, and the overemphasis on light comedy elements undermines the tension expected of a political drama. However, other viewers appreciate that the supporting characters are more outstanding, there are more comedic moments, and the character relationships are richer, making the overall viewing experience more relaxed and enjoyable.

The initial rating was only 7.0, but it gradually recovered to 7.3 as the plot progressed, indicating an improvement in the quality of the later episodes. Regardless, Joy of Life Season 2 remains one of the most anticipated domestic dramas of 2024, with its popularity and social discussion far surpassing other series airing at the same time.
