Overview

"The Three-Body Problem" is a sci-fi mystery series that premiered on Tencent Video in January 2023, directed by Yang Lei. Zhang Luyi plays Wang Miao, Yu Hewei plays Shi Qiang, Chen Jin plays Ye Wenjie (older), Wang Ziwen plays the young Ye Wenjie, and Lin Yongjian plays the General. The series consists of 30 episodes and holds a Douban rating of 8.7, making it one of the most anticipated domestic dramas of 2023. It is adapted from Liu Cixin's Hugo Award-winning sci-fi masterpiece "The Three-Body Problem," a seminal work in Chinese science fiction literature with over 30 million copies sold worldwide and translated into more than 30 languages.

This series is a milestone for domestic sci-fi television. Previously, Chinese audiences generally had low expectations for homegrown sci-fi dramas, but "The Three-Body Problem" successfully shattered this bias with its solid script adaptation, faithful adherence to the source material, and outstanding visual presentation. Fans of the original novel widely expressed satisfaction with the series—a rarity among IP adaptations.

Plot

The story begins with a bizarre series of suicides within the scientific community. Several top physicists commit suicide within a short period, their final words all pointing to a common clue—physics no longer exists. Nanomaterials scientist Wang Miao (played by Zhang Luyi) is drawn into the mystery when he starts seeing a strange countdown before his eyes, which seems linked to a mysterious signal from the cosmos.

The rough-and-tumble detective Shi Qiang (played by Yu Hewei) is assigned to investigate the scientists' suicides. He seeks out Wang Miao, and the two join forces to uncover the truth. Their investigation leads them to a mysterious organization called the Frontiers of Science and a VR game called "Three-Body."

Meanwhile, another storyline takes us back to the 1960s. Young astrophysicist Ye Wenjie (played by Wang Ziwen / Chen Jin), having witnessed her father's persecution and death during the Cultural Revolution, becomes utterly disillusioned with human civilization. While working at the Red Coast Base, she sends Earth's signal into space and receives a reply from the Trisolaran civilization four light-years away. Ye Wenjie makes a decision that alters humanity's fate—she replies to the Trisolarans, inviting them to Earth.

Cast

Actor Role Description
Zhang Luyi Wang Miao Nanomaterials scientist, key figure in unraveling the Trisolaran mystery
Yu Hewei Shi Qiang Rough yet sharp detective, Wang Miao's partner
Chen Jin Ye Wenjie (Older) Astrophysicist, the mastermind behind the Trisolaran organization
Wang Ziwen Ye Wenjie (Young) Young scientist during the Cultural Revolution, makes a pivotal choice
Lin Yongjian General High-ranking military officer responsible for addressing the Trisolaran crisis

Yu Hewei's portrayal of Shi Qiang is the most popular character in the series. Shi Qiang is a rugged, unkempt veteran detective with keen intuition and a strong sense of justice. Yu Hewei brings immense charm to the role—his humor and down-to-earth performance inject a rare lightness into this heavy sci-fi drama.

Chen Jin and Wang Ziwen play the older and younger versions of Ye Wenjie, respectively. Ye Wenjie is the most complex character in the entire "Three-Body" saga—she is both a traitor to human civilization and a victim scarred by her era. Both actresses masterfully portray the tragic and multifaceted nature of the character.
