Overview

The Young Imperial Guards is a Chinese historical suspense drama that premiered on June 3, 2019. Directed by Yi Zheng, Wang Fei, and Peng Xuejun, with Wang Juan serving as the script planner, the series stars Zhang Xincheng and Zhou Yutong in leading roles, with supporting performances by Zheng Wei, Wang Youshuo, He Haochen, and Su Xiaotong. The 42-episode series holds a Douban rating of 7.8 (it once reached 8.1 shortly after its premiere). Set during the Qingli era of the Northern Song Dynasty, the story follows six young individuals with distinct personalities who are selected to join the secretive Mi Ge agency, undertaking various covert missions on the hidden frontlines to safeguard the peace of the Song Empire.

The most delightful surprise of this drama is Wang Juan's script. Renowned for his expertise in crafting plot twists and mind-bending narratives, Wang Juan designed an intricately interwoven suspense plot for The Young Imperial Guards, delivering unexpected twists in nearly every episode that thrilled audiences. Despite launching with zero promotional fanfare, the series rapidly accumulated strong word-of-mouth praise due to its solid script quality, becoming the biggest dark horse of the first half of 2019.

Plot

During the Qingli era of the Northern Song Dynasty, beneath the surface of apparent peace and prosperity, undercurrents of turmoil surged within the Song Empire. Infiltration by spies from the Liao and Western Xia states was severe, and power struggles within the imperial court grew increasingly intense. To counter these covert threats, the Bureau of Military Affairs established a secret agency named Mi Ge, dedicated to counter-espionage and intelligence work.

Yuan Zhongxin (played by Zhang Xincheng) is a seemingly frivolous and unscholarly youth at the Imperial Academy. Outwardly glib-tongued and idle, he is in fact exceptionally intelligent and meticulous. Due to a certain case, he is selected to become a trainee at Mi Ge. There, he meets five other chosen youths: the intelligent and composed Zhao Jian (Zhou Yutong), the honest and upright Wang Kuan (Wang Youshuo), the highly skilled martial artist Pei Jing (He Haochen), the clever and lively Wei Yanei (Zheng Wei), and the gentle and kind-hearted Xiao Jing (Su Xiaotong).

The six youths undergo rigorous training at Mi Ge before being dispatched on various dangerous secret missions. They must confront espionage infiltration from Liao and Western Xia, the scheming plots of powerful ministers within the court, and crises of trust within Mi Ge itself. Through successive missions, the youths gradually evolve from initial mutual suspicion into comrades bound by life and death, using their youth and fervor to protect the peace of the Great Song.

Cultural Impact

Despite lacking major star power or extensive promotional campaigns, The Young Imperial Guards won high audience acclaim through its solid script and excellent production. Wang Juan's screenwriting prowess is the series' greatest highlight; he skillfully blends elements of suspense, comedy, and youthful coming-of-age, creating a compelling story that features both tense spy-thriller plots and the fervor of youth and friendship.

Zhang Xincheng's portrayal of Yuan Zhongxin is the most outstanding character in the series. He masterfully brings to life the charm of this seemingly careless youth with a deep-seated sense of justice, delivering performances that appear nonchalant on the surface yet are strategically brilliant, earning widespread admiration. Yuan Zhongxin has also become the most representative role in Zhang Xincheng's acting career.

The success of the series also led to the production of its sequel, The Young Imperial Guards 2, which premiered in 2023. With a Douban rating of 8.3, higher than the first season, it demonstrates the enduring vitality of this IP.
