Overview

2046 is a romantic drama film released in 2004, directed by Wong Kar-wai. Tony Leung Chiu-wai stars in the lead role, with an all-star cast including Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi, Faye Wong, Takuya Kimura, Carina Lau, Chang Chen, and Maggie Cheung. The film is a co-production between Hong Kong, France, Germany, Italy, and China, with a runtime of 129 minutes and a Douban rating of 7.7. It was selected for competition for the Palme d'Or at the 57th Cannes Film Festival and is considered one of the most ambitious and complex works in Wong Kar-wai's career.

The number 2046 holds multiple meanings. On the surface, it is the room number next to Chow Mo-wan's (Tony Leung) room and the futuristic world in the science fiction novel he is writing. On a deeper level, 1997 (the handover of Hong Kong) plus 50 years of the unchanged promise of "one country, two systems" equals 2047, making 2046 the last year before that—it symbolizes nostalgia for the past and uncertainty about the future.

Plot

In 1966, Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung) returns to Hong Kong from Singapore, wanting to forget everything from his past. He moves into room 2047 at the Oriental Hotel—just one number away from the familiar 2046. From then on, he begins a life as a writer, penning newspaper columns and novels while drifting between different women.

Room 2047 is adjacent to room 2046. Various women have stayed in room 2046, each leaving a mark on Chow Mo-wan's life. The mysterious and elegant Black Spider (Gong Li) is an unspeakable memory he brought back from Singapore. The dance hostess Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi) is passionate and vivacious yet fragile and sensitive; she tries to win Chow's heart with sincerity but ultimately cannot enter it. Jing Wen (Faye Wong), the hotel owner's daughter, is quiet and reserved, separated from her Japanese boyfriend.

Simultaneously, Chow Mo-wan is writing a science fiction novel titled 2046. The novel describes a future world where people can board a train to 2046 to retrieve lost memories. However, no one ever returns from 2046, because once you board that train, you can never turn back.

In the film, reality and fiction intertwine, past and future overlap. Each of Chow Mo-wan's real-life relationships is reflected in the sci-fi narrative of his novel. He constantly searches for something in different women but never finds it. Those lost loves are like room 2046—forever next door, yet forever out of reach.

Cultural Impact

2046 is Wong Kar-wai's comprehensive retrospective and summation of his own cinematic universe. The film features characters and motifs from his previous works, such as Chow Mo-wan and Su Li-zhen from In the Mood for Love and Yuddy (referenced by Tony Leung's cameo at the end) from Days of Being Wild, weaving a grand narrative about memory, time, and loss. In this sense, 2046 serves as a concluding chapter to Wong Kar-wai's earlier works.

The film's production process was extremely lengthy, taking five years from preparation to release. As usual, Wong Kar-wai worked without a complete script, with actors constantly adjusting their roles during filming. The film assembled top-tier actors from China, Japan, and South Korea, with production costs reaching tens of millions of dollars, making it one of the most expensive Chinese-language films at the time. Although this cost-no-object creative approach was controversial, the resulting visual effects and artistic quality are undeniable.

Zhang Ziyi delivers a stunning performance in the film. She masterfully portrays the layers of Bai Ling's fervor and fragility, stubbornness and tenderness, considered one of her finest performances in collaboration with Wong Kar-wai. Tony Leung continues his signature depth and restraint, profoundly capturing Chow Mo-wan's world-weary fatigue and detachment.
