Overview

A Writer's Odyssey is a 2021 fantasy action film directed by Lu Yang, adapted from the short story of the same name by Shuang Xuetao. The screenplay was co-written by Chen Shu, Yu Yang, Qin Haiyan, and Lu Yang. The film stars Lei Jiayin, Yang Mi, Dong Zijian, and Yu Hewei, with supporting roles by Guo Jingfei, Tong Liya, Wang Shengdi, and others. It was released in mainland China on February 12, 2021 (Chinese New Year's Day), with a runtime of 130 minutes. The film grossed over 600 million RMB and holds a 7.0 rating on Douban.

The film was one of the major releases of the 2021 Chinese New Year film season, sparking widespread discussion with its stunning visual effects and unique dual-world narrative. Its production scale and technical standards are considered a significant milestone in the industrialization of Chinese cinema. The action sequences and visual presentation in the fantasy world, in particular, received high praise from audiences.

Plot

The film employs a dual-narrative structure, creating a parallel between the real world and the fantasy world within the novel.

In the real world, Guan Ning (Lei Jiayin) is a desperate father who has been searching for his missing daughter, Xiao Juzi (Wang Shengdi), for six years. This draws the attention of tech magnate Li Mu (Yu Hewei), who offers to help find his daughter on the condition that Guan Ning assassinates a novelist named Lu Kongwen (Dong Zijian). Li Mu believes that the fictional story in Lu Kongwen's online novel God Slayer is affecting reality, particularly the plotline about confronting the Red-haired Demon, which is eroding his own life.

In the novel's world, a young man named Kongwen embarks on a journey to assassinate the Red-haired Demon to avenge his sister. The two worlds mirror each other; the events in the novel directly impact reality, while the fates of characters in reality are projected into the novel.

Yang Mi plays Tu Ling, a cold-blooded enforcer working for Li Mu with formidable mental powers. However, as the mission progresses, she begins to doubt Li Mu's true motives. Guo Jingfei plays dual roles as the Old Monk and the Black Armor, traversing both worlds. Tong Liya's role as Ban Ruo adds a touch of tenderness to the film.

Cultural Impact

A Writer's Odyssey represents a significant milestone in the industrialization of Chinese cinema. The film's visual effects were primarily handled by a domestic team. The grand scenes and intricate action design in the fantasy world reached international standards, marking an important breakthrough for Chinese cinema in the fantasy genre.

The source material is also noteworthy. Original author Shuang Xuetao is one of the most representative young writers in contemporary China, known for his starkly realistic style. Director Lu Yang adapted this literary short story into a commercial blockbuster, infusing it with strong visual imagination while retaining the core spirit of the original work.

Yang Mi's role as Tu Ling was a breakthrough attempt in her acting career. Previously known mainly for idol dramas and urban romance series, her transformation into a cold-blooded villain showcased her versatility as an actress. Lei Jiayin continued his recent streak of excellent screen performances, portraying the obsession and pain of a desperate father with moving authenticity.

Although the film received mixed reviews, its exploration of technology and production was widely recognized within the industry, providing valuable experience for the development of the fantasy genre in Chinese cinema.
