Overview

Ne Zha (Chinese: 哪吒之魔童降世) is a 2019 Chinese 3D animated fantasy action film directed and written by Jiaozi (pen name of Yang Yu), produced by Chengdu Coco Cartoon. The film is a bold reimagining of the legendary figure Nezha from the 16th-century Chinese classic novel Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi) by Xu Zhonglin.

The film was released in IMAX and China Film Giant Screen theaters on July 13, 2019, followed by a nationwide release on July 26. It was distributed by Beijing Enlight Pictures in China and Well Go USA Entertainment in North America. Notably, it became the first Chinese-produced animated feature released in IMAX format.

Plot Summary

Born from the essence of a Chaos Pearl, the Supreme Lord Yuanshi Tianzun refines it into two opposing forces: the Spirit Pearl and the Demon Orb. A heavenly curse decrees that the Demon Orb will be destroyed by lightning in three years. Taiyi Zhenren is tasked with reincarnating the Spirit Pearl as the third son of Li Jing in Chentang Pass — but the jealous Shen Gongbao sabotages the plan, causing the Demon Orb to be born instead. The child is named Ne Zha.

Branded as a demon from birth, Ne Zha is feared and ostracized by the townspeople of Chentang Pass. Despite his destructive nature, his parents and master guide him toward righteousness. When the three-year deadline arrives and heavenly lightning threatens to destroy him, Ne Zha defies the prophecy, declaring "My fate is my own, not heaven's," and joins forces with Ao Bing — the reincarnation of the Spirit Pearl and Dragon Prince — to resist the heavenly tribulation.

Cultural Impact

Beyond its commercial triumph, Ne Zha proved that domestic Chinese animated films could compete directly with Hollywood blockbusters. Its central theme — "My fate is my own, not heaven's" — resonated deeply with audiences tired of predetermined social roles. The film's success catalyzed a renaissance in Chinese animation, establishing the "Fengshen Cinematic Universe" that would later include Jiang Ziya (2020) and the sequel Ne Zha 2 (2025), which went on to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
