Overview

Chengdu is the hometown of giant pandas, located in Sichuan Province in southwestern China. It is home to the world's largest giant panda habitat and breeding centers, including the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the Giant Panda National Park, among other places to see pandas.

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is China's national treasure and the symbol of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). They primarily eat bamboo, consuming 12-38 kilograms daily to maintain their energy.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (commonly known as the Panda Base) was established in 1987. Located in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, it covers an area of approximately 3.1 square kilometers. It is the world's largest artificial breeding facility for giant pandas, housing over 200 pandas.

Officially established in 2021, the Giant Panda National Park spans Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces, with a total area of approximately 27,000 square kilometers. It is China's largest national park named after a single species.
