Overview

Danxia Mountain, located in Renhua County, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, China, is the namesake of the world's "Danxia landform" and is hailed as "China's Red Stone Park." It is not only a National Scenic Area and a National 5A Tourist Attraction but also a UNESCO Global Geopark and a World Natural Heritage site. Danxia Mountain is characterized by its red conglomerate rock formations featuring flat tops, steep cliffs, and gentle lower slopes. The crimson cliffs and crags shine brilliantly like bright rosy clouds under the sun, creating a majestic, perilous, elegant, and uniquely diverse landscape. The scenic area covers a total area of 292 square kilometers. Its core touring zones mainly include the Elder Peak (Zhanglao Feng), Yangyuan Stone, Xianglong Lake, and Jinjiang Gallery, integrating natural scenery, geological science, and cultural heritage. It is an excellent window to witness hundreds of millions of years of Earth's geological changes.

History

The geological history of Danxia Mountain can be traced back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 140 to 70 million years ago. At that time, this area was a vast inland basin where thick layers of red conglomerate were deposited. Subsequently, under the long-term combined effects of internal and external forces such as crustal uplift, water erosion, and weathering, the diverse Danxia landforms seen today—including peak forests, stone walls, stone pillars, and canyons—were formed. Due to its typical and representative nature, Chinese geologists named this type of landform "Danxia landform" in the 1930s, making Danxia Mountain the global reference site for studying this landform type.

In terms of cultural history, Danxia Mountain also boasts profound heritage. As early as the Sui and Tang dynasties, monks and Taoists built hermitages here for spiritual practice. By the Ming and Qing dynasties, it became a thriving religious site, leaving behind numerous cliff inscriptions, temples, and ancient mountain fortress ruins. Among them, the "Biechuan Chan Temple" atop the Elder Peak, built in the first year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1662), is one of the important Buddhist sacred sites in Lingnan. These cultural relics and the magnificent natural scenery complement each other, adding deep cultural significance to Danxia Mountain.

Main Attractions

  1. Elder Peak (Zhanglao Feng) Tour Area: This is the earliest developed area of Danxia Mountain, famous for its high vantage points, sunrise views, and vistas of the Danxia peaks. Visitors can climb the stone steps to the Sunrise Watching Pavilion (Guanri Ting) to overlook the rolling red mountains, which are particularly spectacular when shrouded in morning mist. The area also contains historical sites like the Biechuan Chan Temple and cliff inscriptions.
  2. Yangyuan Stone: Known as the "Number One Marvelous Stone under Heaven," this natural stone pillar is famous for its striking resemblance to a male phallus. Standing 28 meters high with a diameter of 7 meters, it is a wonder formed by natural weathering and erosion, showcasing the uncanny craftsmanship of the Danxia landform.
  3. Xianglong Lake: Located south of the Elder Peak, the lake is named for its outline, which resembles a soaring green dragon. The clear lake is surrounded by mountains. Visitors can take boat rides to appreciate the reflections and tranquil beauty of Danxia Mountain from a water-level perspective.
  4. Jinjiang Gallery: Taking a boat tour on the Jin River is the best way to experience the elegant side of Danxia Mountain. The river meanders between peaks, with bamboo groves swaying on both banks and crimson cliffs reflected in the water, creating a moving landscape painting.
  5. Yinyuan Stone: Echoing the Yangyuan Stone, this realistic natural stone formation is located within the Xianglong Lake scenic area. Together, they form a unique natural and cultural landscape of Danxia Mountain.
  6. Shaoshi Mountain Scenic Area: An important component of Danxia Mountain, it is said to be where Emperor Shun played the Shao music during his southern tour, hence the name. It features numerous peculiarly shaped peaks and ancient fortress ruins, offering a more primitive and wild charm.
