Overview

Daocheng Yading, located in Shangri-La Town (formerly Riwa Township), Daocheng County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China, is a national nature reserve and a national AAAAA tourist attraction that integrates spectacular plateau landscapes such as snow-capped mountains, glaciers, lakes, meadows, and forests. Its core scenic area mainly consists of three sacred mountains—"Xiannairi," "Yangmaiyong," and "Xianuoduojie"—along with the rivers, lakes, and alpine meadows surrounding them. Renowned for its unique landforms and pristine natural scenery, it is hailed as "the last pure land on the blue planet" and "the soul of Shangri-La," making it a paradise for photography enthusiasts and hikers.

History

"Daocheng" is called "Daoba" in Tibetan, meaning "an open place at the mouth of a valley." "Yading" means "the sunny place" in Tibetan. The three snow-capped mountains within the Yading scenic area are known in Tibetan Buddhism as the "Three Patron Saints Mountains," representing Avalokiteshvara (Xiannairi), Manjushri (Yangmaiyong), and Vajrapani (Xianuoduojie) respectively. They have been sacred pilgrimage sites for Tibetans since ancient times. In 1928, the American-Austrian explorer Joseph Rock reached this area and published photos in National Geographic magazine, bringing this hidden gem to the outside world for the first time. In 1996, photographer Lü Linglong published the photo album In That Distant Place—Daocheng, which greatly promoted the tourism development of Daocheng Yading. In 2001, Daocheng Yading became a national nature reserve and was gradually developed into a mature tourist destination.

  2. Alpine Lakes:

    • Milk Lake (Erongcuo): Located at the foot of Yangmaiyong, the lake's edges are milky white while the center is blue, clear and translucent.
    • Five-Color Lake (Danzengcuo): Situated between Xiannairi and Yangmaiyong, it is named for refracting five colors of light under sunlight. It can be reached on foot from Milk Lake.
