Daocheng Yading is located in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province and is known as the last pure land on the blue planet. Within the scenic area, three snow-capped mountains are arranged in a triangular formation, revered as sacred mountains in Tibetan Buddhism. High-altitude lakes such as Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake are embedded among them like sapphires. It is a national 5A-level tourist attraction and a World Biosphere Reserve.

Overview

Daocheng Yading Scenic Area is located in Yading Village, Daocheng County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Situated in the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, it ranges in altitude from 2,900 meters to 6,032 meters and covers a total area of 1,457.5 square kilometers. The scenic area centers around the three snow-capped mountains of Chenresig (Xiannairi), Jampelyang (Yangmaiyong), and Chanadorje (Xianuoduoji), surrounded by vast alpine meadows, primeval forests, and glacial lakes. It is hailed as the last pure land on the blue planet and the soul of Shangri-La. Daocheng Yading is a National 5A Tourist Attraction, a National Nature Reserve, and a member of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

In Tibetan, Daocheng Yading means "the sunny land." The three snow-capped mountains are revered as sacred mountains in Tibetan Buddhism, representing Avalokiteshvara (Goddess of Mercy), Manjushri (Bodhisattva of Wisdom), and Vajrapani (Bodhisattva of Power) respectively. They attract a large number of Tibetan pilgrims every year. In 1928, American explorer Joseph Rock visited the area and introduced Yading's magnificent scenery to the Western world. British writer James Hilton based his novel Lost Horizon on this, giving birth to the term "Shangri-La."

Chenresig is the highest of the three sacred mountains and the iconic peak of Daocheng Yading. Its majestic, snow-capped body resembles a giant pyramid from afar. Jampelyang was praised by Joseph Rock as the most beautiful snow mountain in the world, with elegant lines and pristine ice. Chanadorje is renowned for its precipitous terrain and spectacular glaciers.

Core Landscapes

Milk Lake (Luorong Cuo) is one of the most famous lakes in Daocheng Yading, located at the foot of Jampelyang at an altitude of about 4,500 meters. The lake's light blue waters are surrounded by snow-capped mountains and meadows, creating a dreamlike scene. Five-Color Lake (Wuse Hai), at about 4,600 meters, gets its name from the five different colors the water appears under sunlight and is one of the highest lakes in Yading.

Pearl Lake (Zhenzhu Hai) is the lake closest to the scenic area entrance, at about 3,950 meters. It is the best spot for photographing the reflection of Chenresig. Luorong Pasture, at about 4,150 meters, is an open alpine pasture offering magnificent views of all three sacred mountains simultaneously. It also serves as the starting point for trekking to Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake.

Chonggu Monastery is located at the foot of Chenresig at about 3,900 meters. It is the most important Tibetan Buddhist temple within the Yading scenic area and an ideal spot for visitors to rest and admire the sacred mountains.

Cultural Significance

Daocheng Yading is not only a stunning natural landscape but also a sacred site in Tibetan Buddhism. During the Tibetan New Year, local Tibetans perform the kora (circumambulation) around the three sacred mountains, expressing reverence for nature and devotion to their faith. The kora route is approximately 30 kilometers long, requiring a full day of trekking and testing both physical endurance and willpower.

The Tibetan culture in the Yading region is well-preserved. Visitors can experience authentic Tibetan customs, taste traditional foods like butter tea and tsampa, and enjoy Tibetan song and dance performances. The local Tibetan dwellings are also distinctive, with stone houses blending seamlessly into the surrounding snowy mountains and meadows, creating a unique cultural landscape.
