Gaoyi Ancient Town, located in Huitong County, Huaihua City, Hunan Province, is a well-preserved complex of ancient residential buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, renowned as the "First Village in Jiangnan" and a "Folk Custom Museum." It is not isolated on flat land but is nestled against mountains and beside water, surrounded by hills on three sides and facing the Wu River on one side. Viewed from above, the entire village appears to be placed within a tall traditional armchair, hence the name "Gaoyi" (High Chair). The core appeal of the ancient town lies in its ancient architecture, unique village layout, and profound culture of farming and scholarship, offering visitors a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle to explore the ancient charm of western Hunan.
History
The formation and development of Gaoyi Ancient Village are primarily attributed to the Yang family. According to genealogical records, their ancestors Yang Zaisi and Yang Tongguan (also known as Yang Wanzhe) were generals in the late Yuan Dynasty. In the 13th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1380 AD), descendants of Yang Tongguan, brothers Yang Shenglong and Yang Shengbang, migrated from Taihe, Jiangxi to this area to escape war, establishing a settlement and multiplying over generations. Through over six centuries of construction spanning the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Yang descendants adhered to the ancestral motto of "passing on the family through farming and study," engaging in agriculture, scholarship, and commerce, gradually forming the large-scale, orderly planned ancient architectural complex seen today. Most buildings in the village date from the Ming and Qing periods, especially from the early Qing to the early Republic of China era. Despite the passage of time, their layout and features remain remarkably intact, vividly recording the history of a clan settlement's rise and fall.
Main Attractions
The essence of Gaoyi Ancient Town lies in its contiguous ancient dwellings. There are 104 ancient buildings surviving from the 13th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty to the 7th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1380-1881), with a total floor area of nearly 20,000 square meters. Centered around the Wutong Temple, these buildings radiate outward in a plum blossom pattern, divided into five natural clusters: Laowu Street, Kanjiao, Dawu Lane, Tianduan, and Upper & Lower Stockades. Key highlights include:
- Ancient Architectural Complex: The buildings are mostly wooden post-and-lintel structures with tall gable walls (firewalls) on both sides, forming typical "Yinzi Houses." The carvings (wood, stone, and brick) on doors, windows, beams, lintels, and column bases are exquisite and rich in themes, embodying traditional cultural motifs like "Happiness, Prosperity, Longevity, Joy" and "Fisherman, Woodcutter, Farmer, Scholar."
- Qingbai Hall (Hall of Integrity): The village's old schoolhouse, reflecting the Yang family's tradition of valuing education. Its simple, antique furnishings offer a glimpse into the atmosphere of an ancient academy.
- Drunken Moon Tower: Once a gathering place for literati and scholars. Climbing the tower offers a view of part of the village.
- Yijia Pavilion and Rainbow Pavilion: Public resting spaces in the village, witnessing the daily life and social interactions of the villagers.
- Village Layout and Alleys: A maze of crisscrossing bluestone-paved alleys invites wandering as if traveling through time. The panoramic view of the entire village's "high chair" shape from the viewing platform on the back hill is particularly spectacular.
- Folk Culture: The village still preserves traditional customs such as Nuo opera, sacrificial ceremonies, weddings, and funerals. During festivals or special events, visitors have the chance to experience the authentic folk culture of western Hunan.
