Overview
Guilin is located in the northeastern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and is one of the most famous tourist destinations in China and even the world. The phrase "Guilin's landscape is the finest under heaven" originates from a poem by the Southern Song Dynasty poet Wang Zhenggong. Having been recited for over 800 years, it has become the most classic and authoritative evaluation of Guilin's scenery. Guilin is renowned worldwide for its typical karst topography, featuring towering peaks rising from the ground, meandering clear waters, deep and serene caves, and peculiar stone forests, all of which compose a landscape painting unparalleled in the world. The Li River Scenic Area is a National 5A-level Tourist Attraction, and the Guilin Karst is inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List.
The core of Guilin's landscape is the Li River. The Li River stretches approximately 437 kilometers in total, with the roughly 83-kilometer waterway from Guilin to Yangshuo being the most exquisite section, hailed as the "Hundred-Mile Gallery." Along the banks, peculiar peaks stand tall, emerald bamboo groves provide shade, and pastoral scenes are picturesque. Taking a boat cruise through this area feels like being immersed in a flowing ink-wash scroll. The back of the 20-yuan note from the fifth series of Chinese Renminbi features the classic view of the Yellow Cloth Reflection on the Li River.

Elephant Trunk Hill is the city landmark of Guilin, located at the confluence of the Li River and the Peach Blossom River in the urban area. The hill remarkably resembles an elephant standing by the river with its trunk extended to drink water, appearing vivid and lifelike. The Water-Moon Cave between the elephant's trunk and leg is like a bright moon floating on the water, creating the marvelous scene of "Elephant Hill and Water Moon."
The Longji Rice Terraces are located in Longsheng Various Nationalities Autonomous County, about 80 kilometers from downtown Guilin. The terraces spiral from the foot to the top of the mountains, layered like chains or ribbons, presenting a magnificent and imposing sight. Construction of the terraces began in the Yuan Dynasty, over 650 years ago, and they are the fruit of generations of labor by the Zhuang and Yao people. The best viewing periods are during the spring irrigation season and the autumn harvest season.

Cultural Significance
Guilin is not only famous for its natural scenery but also possesses profound historical and cultural heritage. Guilin was an important cultural center in the ancient Lingnan region, where literati and scholars throughout history left behind a wealth of poems, essays, and stone carvings. The Guihai Stele Forest Museum houses nearly 2,000 cliff inscriptions from the Tang and Song dynasties onwards, making it one of the most significant stele forests in southern China.
Guilin is also one of China's earliest international tourist cities. In 1973, Guilin was designated by the State Council as one of China's first batch of tourist cities open to the outside world, subsequently hosting countless international tourists and heads of state. Former U.S. President Richard Nixon once remarked that Guilin's landscape was like walking into a Chinese ink-wash painting. In 2014, the South China Karst Phase II, led by Guilin, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List, further cementing the world-class status of Guilin's landscape.
