Synopsis

Gulangyu is a landmark island in Xiamen, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017. It is renowned as the "Garden on the Sea," "Island of Pianos," and "Museum of International Architecture." The island is free of motor vehicles, with over a thousand buildings blending Chinese and Western architectural styles scattered across its landscape. The Piano Museum and Sunlight Rock are must-visit attractions, and while strolling through its deep alleys, one can often hear the faint sound of piano music drifting through the air.

Overview

Gulangyu Island is located in the southwest corner of Xiamen City, Fujian Province, facing Xiamen Island across the sea. With an area of about 1.88 square kilometers, it is one of China's most romantic islands. Gulangyu enjoys multiple accolades such as "Garden on the Sea," "Island of Pianos," and "World Architecture Museum." It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017. The island is adorned with blooming flowers and shaded by lush trees all year round. Over a thousand historical buildings, blending Chinese and Western styles, are scattered across the landscape. The faint sound of pianos can be heard from deep alleys, and a leisurely, artistic atmosphere permeates every corner. Motor vehicles are completely banned on Gulangyu, so visitors can only explore on foot. This slow-paced mode of travel is itself a unique experience.

The name "Gulangyu" originates from a reef southwest of the island. When the tide rises, the waves striking the reef sound like beating drums, hence the name "Gulangyu" (Drum Wave Islet). The island's highest point, Sunlight Rock, stands at about 93 meters above sea level. From its summit, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire island and the Xiamen cityscape across the water.

The International Settlement is Gulangyu's most historically significant landscape. After the Opium War in 1840, Xiamen became one of the five treaty ports. Over ten countries, including Britain, France, Germany, and Japan, successively established consulates on Gulangyu. Foreign residents and wealthy merchants built a large number of villas and mansions in diverse styles, forming a unique architectural ensemble that blends Chinese and Western elements. These buildings incorporate Victorian, Gothic, Baroque, and traditional Chinese styles, earning the area the title "World Architecture Museum."

The Piano Museum is located within Shuzhuang Garden and houses nearly a hundred antique pianos from around the world, the oldest of which was made in 1801. Gulangyu's connection with the piano dates back over a century—the island's residents have a deep love for music, with almost every household once owning a piano. It once had the highest per capita piano ownership in China, hence the nickname "Island of Pianos."

Cultural Significance

Gulangyu is a microcosm of modern Chinese history and a model of cultural fusion between East and West. This small island witnessed China's historical transition from isolation to openness—the opening of treaty ports after the Opium War, the return and construction by overseas Chinese, the introduction of Western culture, and the preservation of traditional Chinese culture have all left profound marks here.

Gulangyu's musical tradition is particularly prominent. Since the early 20th century, the island has nurtured a large number of musical talents, including internationally renowned pianists like Yin Chengzong and Xu Feiping. The annual Organ Art Festival and Piano Art Festival attract musicians and enthusiasts from around the world. With its unique musical culture and architectural heritage, Gulangyu showcases to the world another facet of Chinese culture—one that is inclusive and open.
