Overview

Heavenly Lake of Tianshan, anciently known as "Yaochi" (Jade Lake), is situated on the northern slopes of the Bogda Peak within Fukang City, Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. It is a typical alpine moraine-dammed lake, located at an elevation of approximately 1,910 meters. The lake surface is crescent-shaped, stretching about 3.5 kilometers from north to south, with a maximum width of about 1.5 kilometers from east to west. Its average depth is 60 meters, reaching a maximum depth of 105 meters. Renowned for its magnificent combination of snow-capped mountains, lakes, forests, and meadows, it is hailed as the "Pearl of Tianshan" and forms an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Xinjiang Tianshan". The scenery here varies dramatically across the four seasons. In summer, it offers a cool and pleasant retreat, making it a popular summer resort. In winter, it transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, attracting countless domestic and international tourists for sightseeing, photography, and geological research.

History

The history of Heavenly Lake is deeply intertwined with myths and legends. In ancient Chinese literature, it was often depicted as the "Yaochi," the dwelling place of the Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu). Records in texts like "The Biography of King Mu, Son of Heaven" and "Classic of Mountains and Seas" have imbued it with a rich mythological aura. The Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin further immortalized the lake with his verse: "At the Jade Pool the Queen Mother opens her window; The Yellow Bamboo Song shakes the earth with its sorrow."

From a geological perspective, Heavenly Lake was formed during Quaternary glacial activity. It is a moraine-dammed lake created by glacial debris blocking a river channel after glacier retreat. In modern times, its scientific and tourism value has been gradually recognized. In the 1970s, it was officially opened to the public as a scenic area. In 2013, as part of "Xinjiang Tianshan," it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, gaining international recognition for its outstanding natural aesthetic value and geological features such as glaciers and landforms.

Main Attractions

  1. Heavenly Lake Surface: The core attraction. The lake water is clear and azure, reflecting the distant Bogda Snow Peak (5,445 meters). Visitors can stroll along the lakeside boardwalk to admire the scenery from different angles or take a cruise (additional fee) to experience the lake's coolness and depth up close.
  2. Mayashan (Horse Teeth Mountain) Cableway: Taking the cableway leads to the Mayashan scenic area. With its higher elevation and open vistas, it offers an excellent vantage point for a panoramic view of Heavenly Lake and the distant Bogda Peak. The mountain features rows of limestone peaks resembling horse teeth, creating a unique landscape.
  3. Xi Wangmu Ancestral Temple: Located on the eastern slope of the lake, this Taoist temple was built to commemorate the myth of the Queen Mother of the West. Built against the mountain, it is an important site for understanding the lake's mythological culture.
  4. Dinghai Shenzhen (Sea-Calming Needle): An ancient elm tree standing alone on the northern shore of the lake. It is considered a wonder because it is the only elm in the area and has never been submerged despite fluctuations in the water level, hence its name.
  5. Qianlongyuan (East/West Small Heavenly Pools): Located below the main lake, consisting of waterfalls and pools. Legend says it was the foot-washing basin of the Queen Mother of the West. The scenery is serene and beautiful, contrasting with the grandeur of the main lake.
  6. Bogda Peak: The highest peak in the eastern Tianshan range, perpetually snow-capped with sprawling glaciers. Its three majestic, steep peaks standing side by side form a spectacular sight and serve as the backdrop and soul of the Heavenly Lake scenery.
