Synopsis

Mount Huangshan is located in the southern part of Anhui Province and is renowned worldwide for its five wonders: unique pine trees, bizarre rocks, sea of clouds, hot springs, and winter snow. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its cultural and natural significance in 1990. The Welcoming Guest Pine, over 800 years old, is a symbol of Mount Huangshan and the spirit of Chinese hospitality. Xu Xiake of the Ming Dynasty praised it, saying, "After visiting the Five Great Mountains, one finds no other mountains worth seeing; after returning from Mount Huangshan, one finds the Five Great Mountains not worth seeing."

The Welcoming Pine

The Welcoming Pine is the most iconic landscape of Mount Huangshan and a symbol of the Chinese people's spirit of hospitality. This ancient Huangshan pine grows on a cliff beside the Green Lion Rock, east of the Yuping Pavilion, and is at least 800 years old. One of its branches extends outward, resembling a person stretching out an arm to welcome guests from afar, presenting a posture of vigorous and elegant beauty.

The Welcoming Pine is not only a symbol of Mount Huangshan but also appears in the large iron relief painting Welcoming Pine in the Great Hall of the People, becoming part of China's national image. The Mount Huangshan Scenic Area has also assigned a dedicated "Pine Guardian" to protect this precious ancient tree 24 hours a day.

Main Attractions

The Mount Huangshan scenic area is divided into two main touring regions: the Front Mountain and the Back Mountain. The Front Mountain is known for its majestic and precipitous scenery, while the Back Mountain is celebrated for its elegant and secluded beauty. Key attractions include:

Lotus Peak is the highest peak of Mount Huangshan at 1,864.8 meters. Reaching the summit offers a panoramic view of rolling mountains and surging seas of clouds. Bright Summit is the second-highest peak, offering expansive views and is one of the best locations for watching the sunrise and sea of clouds. Celestial Capital Peak is the steepest peak of Mount Huangshan, with an almost vertical climbing path, earning it the name "Capital of Heaven."

West Sea Grand Canyon is a recently developed premier scenic area within Mount Huangshan. The canyon is deep and long, filled with towering strange peaks, and is hailed as a "dreamlike scenic area." Paiyun Pavilion is the best spot to view the sunset glow over Mount Huangshan. When the sun sets, the evening glow reflecting on the sea of clouds creates an extraordinarily splendid scene.

Cultural Heritage

The cultural value of Mount Huangshan is equally immeasurable. Zhu Xi, a representative figure of Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism, once lectured here. The Huizhou region at the foot of Mount Huangshan is one of the areas in China where traditional culture is most completely preserved. Elements of Huizhou culture, such as Huizhou-style architecture, the Huizhou merchant spirit, and the Xin'an School of painting, all have deep connections with Mount Huangshan.

Mount Huangshan has also been a vital source of inspiration for Chinese landscape painting. The Xin'an School and the Huangshan School during the Ming and Qing dynasties created numerous masterpieces using Huangshan's strange peaks and seas of clouds as their subjects. Paintings of Huangshan by artists like Jian Jiang, Shi Tao, and Mei Qing remain pinnacle achievements in Chinese painting art to this day.
