Huangshan
Synopsis
Mount Huangshan is located in southern Anhui Province, with its main peak, Lotus Peak, standing at an elevation of 1,864.8 meters. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its cultural and natural significance in 1990. The mountain is renowned for its four wonders: uniquely shaped pines, spectacular rock formations, sea of clouds, and hot springs. The Welcoming Guest Pine, over a thousand years old, is an iconic landmark. The best spots to view the sunrise and sea of clouds are at Bright Summit, while the West Sea Grand Canyon offers the most magnificent hiking trail. As the saying goes, "After visiting the Five Great Mountains, one need not see other mountains; after visiting Huangshan, one need not see the Five Great Mountains."
Overview
Mount Huangshan, located in Huangshan City in southern Anhui Province, was anciently known as Yishan. It was renamed Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) due to the legend that the Yellow Emperor (Xuanyuan) once practiced alchemy and cultivated the Dao here. The main peak, Lotus Peak, stands at 1,864.8 meters above sea level, making it the highest peak in Anhui Province. In 1990, Mount Huangshan was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site. The Ming Dynasty geographer Xu Xiake visited Huangshan twice and left the timeless praise: "Having visited the Five Great Mountains, I find no other mountains worth seeing; but after returning from Mount Huangshan, I find the Five Great Mountains not worth seeing." This elevated Huangshan to the pinnacle of China's famous mountains.
Mount Huangshan is renowned worldwide for its unique granite landforms. Hundreds of millions of years of geological movement and weathering erosion have sculpted Huangshan's myriad of fantastically shaped peaks and strange rocks. Coupled with a warm climate and abundant precipitation, Huangshan boasts lush vegetation and is often shrouded in mist and clouds, forming the four major natural wonders: the Strange Pines, Grotesque Rocks, Sea of Clouds, and Hot Springs. The beauty of Huangshan lies not only in its natural scenery but also in the profound cultural heritage bestowed upon it by generations of literati and artists—from the poetry of Li Bai to the paintings of Shi Tao, Huangshan has been a vital source of inspiration for Chinese landscape poetry and painting.
The Four Wonders
| Wonder | Description |
|---|---|
| Strange Pines | Huangshan pines take root in granite crevices, assuming myriad bizarre forms, with the Guest-Greeting Pine being the most famous. |
| Grotesque Rocks | Granite weathered into various peculiar shapes, such as the Flying-Over Rock and Monkey Gazing at the Sea. |
| Sea of Clouds | Fog and mist occur over 200 days a year on average, with the five major sea of clouds areas each having distinct characteristics. |
| Hot Springs | The Huangshan hot springs have clear water, maintain a constant temperature of 42°C, and are suitable for both drinking and bathing. |
The Guest-Greeting Pine is the most iconic landscape of Huangshan. This pine tree is located above Wenshu Cave to the left of Yupinglou (Jade Screen Pavilion), is approximately 800 to 1,000 years old, and stands about 10 meters tall. One of its branches extends outward, resembling a hospitable host extending an arm to welcome guests from afar. The Guest-Greeting Pine is not only a symbol of Huangshan but also one of China's most recognizable natural landscapes—the large iron relief painting Guest-Greeting Pine hanging in the Great Hall of the People was created based on this very tree.
The Sea of Clouds at Huangshan is one of the most anticipated natural wonders throughout the year. Huangshan is shrouded in mist and clouds for over 200 days a year. When the mist and clouds rise to a certain height, the peaks emerge like islands in a vast sea, creating the spectacular Sea of Clouds. The five major viewing areas are distributed across the East Sea, South Sea, West Sea, North Sea, and Heavenly Sea. The Sea of Clouds is most magnificent in winter and after rain when the sky first clears.
