Overview

Hukou Waterfall of the Yellow River is located on the main stream of the Yellow River at the border between Ji County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province and Yichuan County, Yan'an City, Shaanxi Province, China. It is the second largest waterfall in China and the world's largest yellow waterfall. Renowned for its majestic power, unique form, and profound cultural significance, Hukou Waterfall stands as a symbol of the Chinese national spirit. Here, the mighty Yellow River, hundreds of meters wide, abruptly narrows to just twenty or thirty meters before plunging into a stone trough with a drop of over 30 meters. The spectacle resembles water boiling in a giant pot, hence the name "Hukou" (Kettle Spout). The wonder of "a thousand miles of the Yellow River collected in one pot" creates a thunderous roar, rising mist, and frequent rainbows, forming an extremely spectacular scene hailed as the "Heart of the Yellow River, Soul of the Nation."

History

The formation of Hukou Waterfall resulted from the combined effects of geological movements and river erosion. Approximately 650,000 years ago, crustal movements and the long-term downcutting of the Yellow River caused fracturing and differential hardness in the rock layers at this location, ultimately shaping today's deep-trough waterfall landscape. Hukou Waterfall is not only a natural wonder but also carries profound historical and cultural weight. Ancient texts like the Shangshu (Book of Documents) mention "the completion of work at Hukou," and legend holds that Yu the Great dredged the river channel here during his flood control efforts. Historically, it was an important ferry crossing and trade route. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, the renowned composer Xian Xinghai, inspired by witnessing the waterfall's grandeur, drew creative inspiration and composed the immortal Yellow River Cantata, elevating Hukou Waterfall into a musical symbol of the indomitable spirit of the Chinese nation.

Main Attractions

The scenic area of Hukou Waterfall features concentrated sights, best viewed from the Shanxi and Shaanxi sides, each offering unique perspectives.
* Main Waterfall Area: The core of the scenic area, allowing visitors to experience up close the震撼 of the Yellow River plunging from above. During the high-water season (summer), the waterfall can reach a width of 100 meters with powerful, muddy waves; during the low-water season (winter), spectacular ice formations can be seen.
* Dragon Cave (Shanxi side): Also known as the "Waterfall Viewing Cave," this is a natural stone cave. Visitors can descend to the bottom level and look up at the waterfall from below, experiencing the ultimate perspective of "the Yellow River's waters coming from the heavens," with mist spraying on the face and the roar filling the ears.
* Ten-Mile Dragon Trough: A several-kilometer-long, narrow stone trough downstream formed by river erosion, resembling a giant dragon winding underground, witnessing the cutting power of the Yellow River over millions of years.
* Mengmen Mountain (Shaanxi side): Located about 3 kilometers downstream in the center of the Yellow River's torrent, two massive rocks stand firm midstream. Legend says they were stone piers used by Yu the Great to control the river, featuring ancient cliff carvings.
* Yellow River Murals: On the riverbed banks on both sides of the waterfall, long-term冲刷 and erosion by the river have created colorful, variedly shaped natural reliefs,堪称 masterpieces of nature.
