Overview

The Hulunbuir Grassland is located in the northeastern part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on the Hulunbuir Plateau west of the Greater Khingan Mountains. Covering a total area of approximately 100,000 square kilometers, it is one of the world's four major grasslands and is acclaimed as the finest grassland on Earth. Hulunbuir derives its name from the Hulun Lake and Buir Lake within its territory. The grassland stretches about 350 kilometers from east to west and 300 kilometers from north to south, boasting lush water and grass as well as magnificent scenery. Summer is the most beautiful season in Hulunbuir—endless waves of emerald green stretch as far as the eye can see, the melodious sound of the horse-head fiddle echoes, pristine white yurts dot the green grassland, and herds of cattle and sheep are scattered like pearls across the landscape.

Hulunbuir is a multi-ethnic region where ethnic groups such as the Mongol, Daur, Evenki, and Oroqen peoples have lived for generations, preserving their unique cultural traditions. Here, visitors can experience galloping on horseback across the grassland, staying in a yurt, savoring hand-held mutton and milk tea, listening to horse-head fiddle performances, and participating in the Nadam Fair, fully immersing themselves in the boldness and hospitality of the grassland peoples.

Grassland Experiences

In Hulunbuir, the most unforgettable experience is undoubtedly galloping on horseback across the boundless grassland. No advanced riding skills are needed; local herders will select gentle horses for you and accompany you throughout the ride. On horseback, with the breeze brushing your face and endless green grassland stretching before you, the sense of freedom and exhilaration is something that can never be experienced in the city.

Staying in a yurt is also a unique experience. Traditional yurts are constructed with wooden frames and felt, offering a warm and cozy interior. Lying inside a yurt at night, you can see a sky full of stars through the skylight while the distant, melodious sound of the horse-head fiddle drifts in. This romantic feeling is unforgettable for a lifetime. Of course, the grassland cuisine should not be missed—tender and juicy hand-held mutton, crispy-on-the-outside and tender-on-the-inside roasted whole lamb, rich and fragrant milk tea, paired with locally produced blueberry jam and Lieba (Russian bread), creating a feast for the taste buds.
