Jiuzhaigou
Synopsis
Jiuzhaigou is located in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province and was inscribed as a World Natural Heritage site in 1992. It is renowned for its six wonders: alpine lake groups, waterfalls, colorful forests, snow-capped peaks, blue ice, and Tibetan customs. The Five-Flower Lake is brilliantly colorful, the Nuorilang Waterfall is majestic, and the Pearl Shoal Waterfall resembles countless pearls. Overview
Jiuzhaigou is located in Jiuzhaigou County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Its name derives from the nine Tibetan villages scattered within the valley. Jiuzhaigou is one of China's most renowned natural landscapes. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 1992 and is also a World Biosphere Reserve and a National Nature Reserve. The scenic area covers approximately 720 square kilometers, with elevations ranging from 2,000 to 3,100 meters. It is celebrated for its "Six Wonders": alpine lake groups, waterfalls, colorful forests, snow-capped peaks, blue ice, and Tibetan folk culture.
The most breathtaking aspect of Jiuzhaigou is its water. There are 114 lakes of various sizes (locally called "haizi"), 17 waterfall groups, and 5 travertine shoals. The water's mesmerizing beauty stems from its high calcium carbonate content, which gives the lakes incredible shades of blue and green, creating crystal-clear, vibrant, and colorful waters. It is often said that "after visiting Jiuzhaigou, one no longer finds other waters appealing"—a fitting tribute to its aquatic scenery.
Core Attractions
| Attraction | Features |
|---|---|
| Five-Flower Lake (Wuhua Hai) | The most colorful lake in Jiuzhaigou, with travertine deposits on the lakebed forming a mosaic of colorful patches |
| Nuorilang Waterfall | One of China's widest alpine waterfalls, approximately 300 meters wide, with a majestic and powerful presence |
| Pearl Shoal Waterfall (Zhenzhu Tan) | Water splashes on the travertine shoal like pearls; filming location for the ending of Journey to the West |
| Mirror Lake (Jing Hai) | The water surface is mirror-like, offering stunning reflections, most serene in the early morning |
| Long Lake (Chang Hai) | The longest and largest lake in Jiuzhaigou, also the highest-altitude lake |
| Five-Color Pond (Wucai Chi) | The smallest but most intensely colored lake in Jiuzhaigou, with gemstone-like blue-green hues |
| Shuzheng Lakes (Shuzheng Qunhai) | A group of 19 lakes of varying sizes, resembling a string of jade |
| Rhinoceros Lake (Xiniu Hai) | A broad lake with clear reflections, most spectacular at sunrise |
Five-Flower Lake is the most representative attraction in Jiuzhaigou. The lakebed contains abundant travertine deposits and algae. Combined with varying water depths, this causes the lake water to display multiple colors—such as light yellow, dark green, deep blue, and navy blue—within a single view, resembling a giant natural palette. Looking down from the viewing platform by the lake, the richness and变幻 of colors are truly breathtaking.
Nuorilang Waterfall is one of China's widest alpine waterfalls, approximately 300 meters wide with a drop of about 20 meters. In Tibetan, "Nuorilang" means "male god," also implying grandeur and majesty. The waterfall surges from dense forests and cascades down steep cliffs with a thunderous roar, creating a magnificent spectacle. In winter, the waterfall freezes into an ice curtain, forming a stunning blue ice waterfall landscape.

Geological Formation
The lakes and waterfalls of Jiuzhaigou were formed by a combination of glacial activity and travertine deposition. Glacial movements hundreds of thousands of years ago carved out U-shaped valleys. Subsequently, calcium carbonate-rich spring water continuously deposited travertine as it flowed through these valleys, forming thick travertine layers on the lakebeds. The refraction and reflection of light by these travertine layers give Jiuzhaigou's lake water its unique colors. Travertine deposition continues slowly to this day, meaning Jiuzhaigou's landscape is still evolving.
