Overview

Mount Emei is located in Emeishan City, Leshan City, Sichuan Province, situated on the southwestern edge of the Sichuan Basin. It rises abruptly from the Emei Plain, with the mountain range stretching approximately 23 kilometers from north to south. Its main peak, the Golden Summit, has an elevation of 3,099 meters. It is one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains, traditionally regarded as the bodhimanda of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. Mount Emei is renowned worldwide for its grandeur, beauty, uniqueness, steepness, and serenity, earning the reputation of "Emei's beauty is unparalleled under heaven." In 1996, Mount Emei, together with the Leshan Giant Buddha, was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site.

Mount Emei is a significant holy site in Chinese Buddhist culture. Legend holds that Buddhism was introduced to Mount Emei during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Over nearly two millennia of subsequent development, over a hundred temples were once built on the mountain. Dozens of ancient temples remain to this day, including Baoguo Temple, Wannian Temple, Qingyin Pavilion, and Fuhu Temple. The Buddhist culture of Mount Emei centers on the veneration of Samantabhadra (Puxian) Bodhisattva—who in Buddhism represents practice and vows, symbolizing the spirit of unifying knowledge and action. The 48-meter-tall bronze statue of the Ten Directions Samantabhadra atop the Golden Summit is the world's largest statue of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. Majestic, magnificent, and gleaming with golden light, it is the most iconic landmark of Mount Emei.

The Golden Summit is the essence of Mount Emei. Standing atop the Golden Summit at 3,099 meters offers an extremely broad view—beneath your feet churns a sea of clouds, in the distance lie rolling mountain ranges, and overhead stands the majestic bronze statue of Samantabhadra. Among the Four Wonders of the Golden Summit, the Buddha's Halo is the most miraculous natural phenomenon. When sunlight hits mist and clouds at a specific angle, a person's shadow is surrounded by a colorful halo of light, resembling a manifestation of the Buddha. This phenomenon occurs on other high mountains as well, but due to Mount Emei's unique topography and climatic conditions, the Buddha's Halo appears with particularly high frequency.

Four Wonders

Wonder Description
Sunrise Watching the sunrise from the Golden Summit as the sun rises from the sea of clouds, with radiant morning glow
Sea of Clouds When mist and clouds pervade, the peaks appear and disappear intermittently, creating a majestic and imposing scene
Buddha's Halo Sunlight refracting through mist and clouds forms a colorful halo, with human shadows reflected within it
Sacred Lamps On clear nights after rain, flickering points of fluorescent light appear on the mountainsides, mysterious and elusive

The monkeys of Mount Emei are another feature that leaves a deep impression on visitors. The Ecological Monkey Zone, located between Qingyin Pavilion and Hongchunping, is home to hundreds of wild Tibetan macaques. These monkeys are unafraid of people and often appear in troops on the walking paths, soliciting food from tourists. They sometimes playfully snatch visitors' hats and backpacks, adding considerable fun and excitement to the hiking journey.
