Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) – Famous Mountain in Anhui with Four Wonders
Synopsis
Huangshan, located in Anhui Province, China, is renowned worldwide for its Four Wonders: Oddly-shaped Pines, Precarious Rocks, Sea of Clouds, and Hot Springs. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of China's most celebrated scenic destinations.
Geographic Overview of Huangshan
Huangshan is situated in the southernmost part of Anhui Province, China, between 29°24′-29°56′ N latitude and 118°01′-118°17′ E longitude. Originally known as Yishan (Mount Yi), it was renamed Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) in 747 AD during the Tang Dynasty, following the legend of Emperor Yan Di (the Yellow Emperor) ascending to heaven after alchemy practice. The scenic area covers approximately 154 square kilometers, with its highest peak, Lianhua Peak (Lotus Peak), reaching an elevation of 1,864 meters above sea level. Together with Guangmingding (Bright Summit, 1,840m) and Tiandu Peak (Heavenly Capital Peak, 1,810m), these three peaks form the main peaks of Huangshan.
The Four Wonders of Huangshan
1. Oddly-shaped Pines (Qisong)
Huangshan Pine (Pinus hwangshanensis) is a unique and iconic landscape feature of Huangshan. These pines grow on cliffs and rock faces at elevations above 800 meters, demonstrating remarkable vitality by rooting themselves in narrow crevices. Famous pines include the Welcoming Pine (Yingkesong), Seeing-off Pine, Meditation Pine, and Harp Pine. The Welcoming Pine, located near Youpin Pavilion, is over a thousand years old, standing 10.2 meters tall with a trunk diameter of 0.64 meters. It has become both a symbol of Huangshan and a cultural ambassador for China.
2. Precarious Rocks (Guai Shi)
Huangshan's peculiar rocks are scattered throughout the mountain, taking various forms—some resemble humans, animals, or scenic formations. Major rock formations include the Flying Stone (Feilaishi), Immortal Pointing the Way (Xianren Zhilu), Monkey Watching the Sea (Houzi Guanhai), Immortals Playing Chess, and the Brush Growing from a Dream. These rocks are products of Quaternary period glaciation and long-term weathering, shaped by millions of years of geological processes into today's breathtaking landscape.
3. Sea of Clouds (Yunhai)
Huangshan's sea of clouds is famous for its beauty, grandeur, strangeness, and dreamlike quality. Along with sunrise, sunset, and Buddha's Light (a light phenomenon), it forms the Four Natural Wonders of Huangshan. The cloud sea typically appears after rainfall or following snow, with cloud layers hovering between 800-1,600 meters elevation. When the cloud sea combines with odd-shaped pines, precarious rocks, and steep peaks, visitors experience what feels like a fairyland on earth.
4. Hot Springs (Wenquan)
Huangshan's hot spring, historically called Zhushaquan (Cinnabar Spring), is located at the foot of Ziyun Peak at an elevation of 650 meters. Renowned as one of the "Famous Springs Under Heaven," the mineral-rich water maintains a constant temperature of 37-42°C and is known for its therapeutic properties in treating skin diseases and rheumatic conditions. After an exhausting mountain hike, soaking in the hot spring provides perfect relaxation.
World Heritage Value
In December 1990, Huangshan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a Mixed World Heritage Site (Cultural and Natural). In 2004, it joined the Global Geoparks Network. Huangshan has served as the cradle of traditional Chinese landscape painting and continues to inspire countless literary and artistic works. The famous Ming Dynasty explorer Xu Xiake wrote in his travelogue: "After visiting the Five Sacred Mountains, you needn't visit other mountains; after visiting Huangshan, you needn't visit the Five Sacred Mountains."
