Sandie Spring is Mount Lu's most famous waterfall, also known as the Three-Step Spring. The waterfall cascades down from the high cliffs of Wulao Peak in three tiers, with a total drop of 155 meters. The upper tier resembles drifting clouds trailing a silk ribbon, the middle tier looks like shattered jade crushing ice, and the lower tier flows like a jade dragon entering a pool. Each tier has its own posture, and their convergence creates a thunderous roar, forming a majestic spectacle. Reaching the base of Sandie Spring requires climbing about 3,000 steps—strenuous but absolutely worthwhile.
Li Bai's famous lines, "Its torrent dashes down three thousand feet from high; As if the Silver River fell from azure sky," are from his poem "Gazing on the Waterfall of Mount Lu," describing the waterfall in the Xiufeng Scenic Area of Mount Lu. This poem depicts the grandeur of Mount Lu's waterfall with immense power and has become a timeless masterpiece.
Cultural Heritage
Mount Lu is a sacred mountain in Chinese cultural history. Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Su Shi, Zhu Xi, and other literati from various dynasties have left immortal works on Mount Lu. After being demoted to Jiangzhou, Bai Juyi often visited Mount Lu, planting peach trees and composing poems along the Flower Path, writing the exquisite lines: "All flowers in late spring have fallen far and wide, But peach blossoms are full-blown on this mountainside." Su Shi's "Inscribed on the Wall of West Forest Temple"—"It's a range viewed in face and peaks viewed from the side, Assuming different shapes viewed from far and wide. Of Mountain Lu we cannot make out the true face, For we are lost in the heart of the very place."—is one of China's most widely known philosophical poems.
Mount Lu also served as an important stage in modern Chinese history. In 1937, Chiang Kai-shek delivered his declaration of war against Japan on Mount Lu. In 1959 and 1970, Mao Zedong convened two important Central Committee meetings (the Lushan Conferences) on Mount Lu. The site of the Lushan Conferences remains well-preserved and has become an important historical memorial.
