Overview
Wuyishan, located in northwestern Fujian Province, China, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for both its cultural and natural significance. It is not only a famous Danxia landform scenic area, renowned worldwide for its "green waters and crimson mountains," but also one of the most celebrated biodiversity conservation areas in southeastern China. It integrates beautiful waters, peculiar peaks, secluded valleys, and perilous gorges. The Nine-bend Stream meanders through the thirty-six peaks, forming a natural landscape painting. Simultaneously, as the birthplace of Oolong tea and black tea, Wuyishan's profound tea culture history and the unique production techniques of "Wuyi Rock Tea" imbue this landscape with vibrant life and a rich, mellow charm.
History
Wuyishan boasts an extremely deep historical and cultural heritage. As early as the Neolithic Age, the ancient Yue people were active here, leaving behind enduring mysteries such as the Hanging Boat Coffins. Since the Qin and Han dynasties, Wuyishan gradually became a dwelling place for Taoist and Buddhist practitioners. Taoism listed it as the "Sixteenth Shengzhen Yuanhua Grotto-Heaven" among the "Thirty-Six Grotto-Heavens." During the Southern Song Dynasty, the Neo-Confucian scholar Zhu Xi lived, wrote, and lectured here for nearly fifty years, establishing the profoundly influential School of Principle (Zhuzi Lixue), making Wuyishan a "Grotto of Southern Dao and Principle." Furthermore, literati and scholars from various dynasties, such as Li Shangyin, Fan Zhongyan, Xin Qiji, Lu You, and Xu Xiake, visited and left behind a wealth of poems, essays, and calligraphy, greatly enriching Wuyishan's cultural essence.
Main Attractions
- Nine-bend Stream Bamboo Rafting: The essence of touring Wuyishan. Drift downstream on a bamboo raft for approximately 9.5 kilometers, taking about 90 minutes. Along the way, you can admire sights like Dawang Peak, Yünü Peak, Tianyou Peak, and the Hanging Coffins. With water winding around mountains, the scenery changes with every step. There's a saying: "Not climbing Tianyou means a wasted trip to Wuyi; not riding a bamboo raft means you never came."
- Tianyou Peak: The premier scenic spot of Wuyishan. Reaching the summit offers a panoramic view of the Nine-bend Stream. When shrouded in mist and clouds, it feels like roaming in a celestial palace, hence the name "Tianyou" (Heavenly Tour). The peak features attractions like Tianyou Temple and Huma Gully.
- Dahongpao (Big Red Robe) Scenic Area: Famous for the rare treasure, the mother trees of "Dahongpao" tea. The six existing mother trees grow on the cliff of Jiulongke (Nine Dragons Nest), over three hundred years old, and are regarded as the holy grail of tea. The area has a strong tea culture atmosphere.
- One-Line Sky: Located in a deep gorge south of the second bend of the Nine-bend Stream. A geological fissure split the rock, creating a crack over a hundred meters long, tens of meters high, and only 30 centimeters at its narrowest point. A single line of daylight filters through, creating a peculiar sight.
- Wuyi Palace: Also known as Huixian Temple, it was where emperors throughout history offered sacrifices to the Lord of Wuyi. It was also one of the six famous temples nationwide during the Song Dynasty. The existing structures were rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty and serve as a window into Wuyishan's history and culture.
- Xiamei Ancient Residential Houses: Located southeast of Wuyishan city proper, it was the starting point of the Shanxi merchants' Ten-Thousand-Mile Tea Road. The village preserves a large number of ancient buildings from the Qing Dynasty, with exquisite brick, stone, and wood carvings, reflecting the prosperous tea market of its heyday.
