Overview

Mount Sanqingshan, located at the border of Yushan County and Dexing City in Shangrao, Jiangxi Province, China, is a renowned Taoist mountain and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Its name originates from the legend of the three highest Taoist deities—Yuqing, Shangqing, and Taiqing—seated atop its peaks. As the main peak of the Huaiyu Mountain Range, Sanqingshan is famous worldwide for its unique granite forest landforms, rich ecological landscapes, and profound Taoist culture. The area features a stunning array of jagged peaks, bizarre rock formations, and rolling seas of clouds, earning it the reputation as "the most beautiful granite peak forest on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean." Its core scenic area covers 229.5 square kilometers, with the highest peak, Yujing Peak, reaching an elevation of 1,819.9 meters. It is a perfect example of the harmonious integration of natural scenery and cultural history.

History

The history of Mount Sanqingshan can be traced back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420 AD). Historical records indicate that the Taoist alchemist and pharmacologist Ge Hong (284-364 AD) once built a hut here to practice alchemy and write books. To this day, the mountain still features the "Ge Hong Offering Elixir" peak rock formation and the remains of his alchemy well, marking him as the founding figure of Taoism on Sanqingshan. Since then, the mountain has been inextricably linked with Taoism. During the Tang and Song dynasties, Taoism flourished here, and the construction of temples and monasteries began. By the Ming Dynasty, Taoist architecture on Sanqingshan reached its peak, forming an ancient architectural complex laid out according to the "Eight Trigrams" pattern, with the Sanqing Palace at its core. These cultural relics, set against the backdrop of natural wonders, together constitute the unique cultural essence of Sanqingshan, embodying the Taoist ideal of "harmony between man and nature." In 2008, Sanqingshan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its outstanding natural beauty and value in demonstrating Earth's evolutionary history.

Main Attractions

The landscapes of Mount Sanqingshan are celebrated for their "Four Wonders": Peculiar Peaks and Bizarre Rocks, Ancient Trees and Famous Flowers, Flowing Springs and Waterfalls, and Seas of Clouds and Misty Waves. The main attractions are concentrated in areas such as Nansqing Garden, West Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Sanqing Fudi (the ancient Taoist architectural complex).

  • Nansqing Garden Scenic Area: This area concentrates the most exquisite figurative rock formations, such as the iconic landscapes "Goddess of the East" (resembling a seated maiden) and "Giant Python Emerging from the Mountain" (a 128-meter-tall granite pillar resembling a python raising its head), which are truly breathtaking.
  • West Coast and Sunshine Coast Scenic Areas: These are two high-altitude plank roads built along mountain cliffs. The West Coast Plank Road, approximately 4 kilometers long, is constructed on cliffs at an altitude of about 1,600 meters. Walking along it offers a thrilling and magnificent "walking among the clouds" experience and is an excellent spot for viewing seas of clouds and sunset glow. The Sunshine Coast Plank Road echoes this from afar, offering open vistas and often spectacular sunrise views.
  • Sanqing Fudi (Sanqing Palace Scenic Area): This is the Taoist cultural center of Sanqingshan. Centered around the Ming Dynasty-built Sanqing Palace, it is surrounded by ancient structures like the Dragon and Tiger Hall, Feixian Terrace, and Fenglei Pagoda, all arranged according to the Bagua (Eight Trigrams) pattern. The area is古朴典雅 (simple and elegant), filled with a profound Taoist atmosphere.
  • Yujing Peak Scenic Area: As the location of Sanqingshan's highest peak, climbing Yujing Peak is a process of challenging oneself. Upon reaching the summit, one can overlook countless mountains and valleys, experiencing the heroic sentiment of "seeing all other peaks dwarfed."
