Overview

Shangri-La is located in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, at the junction of Yunnan, Sichuan, and Tibet, with an average altitude of 3,300 meters. The city was originally named Zhongdian County and was renamed Shangri-La in 2001 with the approval of the State Council. The name originates from the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton, which depicts a hidden paradise in the Himalayas where people live long, healthy, and harmonious lives. Hilton's Shangri-La is believed to be modeled after the Diqing region.

Shangri-La is one of China's most mysterious tourist destinations. It features sacred snow-capped mountains, azure lakes, vast grasslands, and solemn Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Tibetan religious beliefs and cultural traditions are well-preserved here, with butter tea, barley wine, prayer wheels, and thangka paintings forming a unique tapestry of Tibetan life. Shangri-La is the poetry and distant dream in the hearts of many—a pure land far from the hustle and bustle, a fairyland on earth.

Songzanlin Monastery is the most important religious structure in Shangri-La. Its full name is Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, and its construction began in 1679 (the 18th year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign in the Qing Dynasty). Built on a hillside, its golden roofs shimmer in the sunlight, resembling a miniature version of the Potala Palace from afar, hence its nickname "Little Potala Palace." Songzanlin is the largest Gelugpa sect Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan and a religious center for the Sichuan-Yunnan region. The monastery houses numerous precious Buddha statues, thangkas, and scriptures. Monks chant sutras and pray daily, and the butter lamps remain perpetually lit.

Pudacuo National Park is China's first national park, with elevations ranging from 3,500 to 4,159 meters. The park features three core landscapes: Shudu Lake, Bita Lake, and Militang Alpine Pasture. Shudu Lake's water is as blue as a mirror, surrounded by primeval forests, and shrouded in mist in the early morning, creating a fairy-tale scene. Bita Lake is one of the highest-altitude lakes in Yunnan, with crystal-clear water. It is known for the unique phenomenon of "drunken fish"—each year when azalea blossoms fall into the lake, fish that eat them appear intoxicated and float to the surface.

Dukezong Ancient Town is the old town of Shangri-La, with its Tibetan name meaning "Moonlight City." The town was built during the Tang Dynasty and served as a vital hub on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. In 2014, a fire destroyed many ancient buildings, but the town has since been rebuilt and restored. Atop Guishan Park in the ancient town stands the world's largest prayer wheel—21 meters high, weighing 60 tons, gilded, and exquisitely carved. It requires multiple people to turn it together.

Cultural Experiences

Shangri-La offers rich and unique Tibetan cultural experiences. In local Tibetan homes, hosts often treat guests to butter tea and barley wine. Butter tea, made from butter, tea leaves, and salt, has a savory and rich flavor and is considered the best drink for staying warm on the plateau. Thangka painting is the most distinctive Tibetan art form. Artists use mineral pigments to paint Buddha images and religious stories on silk or cotton cloth. The colors are vibrant, and the lines are intricate. A fine thangka can take months or even years to complete.
