Overview
The Summer Palace (颐和园, Yi He Yuan) is located in western Beijing and is China's largest surviving imperial garden. First built in 1750 for Emperor Qianlong's mother's birthday, it was destroyed by Anglo-French forces in 1860 and rebuilt by Empress Dowager Cixi. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
