Overview

Tiananmen Square, located in the center of Beijing, China, is one of the largest city squares in the world. It is not only the geographical center of Beijing but also a national symbol of China, bearing profound historical memories and political significance. The square is bordered by the Tiananmen Rostrum to the north, Zhengyangmen (Qianmen) to the south, the National Museum of China to the east, and the Great Hall of the People to the west. At its center stand the Monument to the People's Heroes and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall. This site has witnessed many major historical events of the People's Republic of China and serves as the core venue for national celebrations such as the National Day military parade. Today, Tiananmen Square is a must-visit destination for both domestic and international tourists in Beijing, where people can feel the solemnity of history and appreciate the grandeur of the nation's capital.

History

The history of Tiananmen Square can be traced back to the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty. At that time, it was a T-shaped imperial square in front of the main gate of the Imperial City, "Chengtianmen," and was reserved exclusively for royal use. The Qing Dynasty continued its use and renamed it "Tiananmen." After the 1911 Revolution, the square gradually opened to the public. On October 1, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China from the Tiananmen Rostrum, endowing the square with a new political life.

To accommodate large-scale national gatherings and celebrations, the square underwent a massive expansion in the 1950s, forming its current scale. Key structures on the square, such as the Monument to the People's Heroes (completed in 1958), the Great Hall of the People, and the National Museum of China (both completed in 1959), as well as the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall (completed in 1977), were successively built, collectively forming the solemn architectural complex seen today. Having weathered many storms, Tiananmen Square is both a participant in and a witness to modern Chinese history.

Main Attractions

  1. Tiananmen Rostrum: Located at the northern end of the square, it was the main gate of the Imperial City during the Ming and Qing dynasties. A large portrait of Mao Zedong hangs on the rostrum, flanked by the slogans "Long Live the People's Republic of China" and "Long Live the Great Unity of the World's Peoples." Visitors can ascend the rostrum for a panoramic view of the square (requires a separate ticket).
  2. Monument to the People's Heroes: Erected at the center of the square to commemorate the people's heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country since 1840. The front of the monument bears the gilded inscription "Eternal Glory to the People's Heroes," handwritten by Mao Zedong.
  3. Chairman Mao Memorial Hall: Located on the southern side of the square, it houses the preserved body of Chairman Mao Zedong for public viewing. The interior is solemn and has strict visiting regulations.
  4. Great Hall of the People: Situated on the western side of the square, it is the meeting place for the National People's Congress and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, as well as a venue for national political and diplomatic activities. Some halls and rooms are open to tourists.
  5. National Museum of China: Located on the eastern side of the square, it houses a rich collection and systematically displays the long history and splendid achievements of Chinese civilization. It is an important window for understanding Chinese history and culture.
  6. Zhengyangmen (Qianmen): An ancient gate tower at the southern end of the square, which, together with the Arrow Tower, forms the southern landmark of old Beijing's central axis.
