Overview

Lake Tai is one of China's five largest freshwater lakes, spanning Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces with a water area of approximately 2,427 square kilometers. It is the largest lake in the eastern plains of China. Renowned for its beautiful scenery and vast misty waters, Lake Tai has been a subject of poetry and admiration for literati and artists since ancient times. Wuxi, located on the northern shore of Lake Tai, possesses the most exquisite scenic resources of the lake. Famous attractions such as Turtle Head Isle, Lingshan Grand Buddha, Li Garden, and Plum Garden are distributed along its shores. Lake Tai is not only a natural lake but also the cradle of Jiangnan water-town culture and the Wu-Yue civilization.

The beauty of Wuxi's Lake Tai can be summarized by Guo Moruo's poetic line: "The finest spot of Lake Tai is, after all, at Turtle Head." Turtle Head Isle represents the essence of Lake Tai's scenery. Every spring when the cherry blossoms bloom, Turtle Head Isle transforms into a sea of pink and is acclaimed as one of the world's top three cherry blossom viewing destinations.

Turtle Head Isle

Turtle Head Isle is the most renowned attraction of Wuxi's Lake Tai. It is a peninsula on the northwestern shore of the lake, named for a giant rock protruding into the water that resembles a divine turtle raising its head. The Cherry Blossom Valley at Turtle Head Isle is planted with over 30,000 cherry trees encompassing more than 80 varieties. From late March to early April each year when the blossoms peak, the entire scenic area is enveloped in a sea of pink and white flowers, set against the backdrop of Lake Tai's blue waters and sky, creating a breathtaking view. Nighttime light shows illuminate the blossoms, offering a uniquely charming experience.

Even outside the cherry blossom season, Turtle Head Isle is worth a visit. Taking a boat tour on Lake Tai allows visitors to admire the graceful outline of Sanshan Island in the distance, observe the scattered white sails on the lake up close, and experience the gentle beauty and tranquility of the Jiangnan water town.

Lingshan Grand Buddha

The Lingshan Grand Buddha is the world's largest Buddha statue. This majestic 88-meter-tall bronze standing statue of Sakyamuni towers atop Lingshan Mountain. Completed and opened in 1997, it has become a landmark of Wuxi. Visitors can ascend to the lotus pedestal and stand at the Buddha's feet to overlook the panoramic view of Lake Tai. Within the Lingshan Scenic Area is also the Brahma Palace—a grand Buddhist cultural building integrating Buddhist culture, architectural art, and modern technology. Its interior murals, sculptures, and light shows are awe-inspiring.

Lake Tai Cuisine

The "Three Whites of Lake Tai" are the most representative local delicacies: white fish, white shrimp, and silver fish. Lake Tai white fish has tender, delicate flesh and a fresh flavor, best enjoyed steamed to appreciate its original taste. Lake Tai white shrimp have thin shells and tender meat, suitable for boiling or stir-frying. Lake Tai silver fish are slender like silver threads, boneless and spineless; stir-fried silver fish with eggs is a classic preparation. Additionally, Wuxi spareribs in brown sauce, Wuxi soup dumplings (xiaolongbao), and Lake Tai water shield soup are must-try dishes when visiting Wuxi.
